  4. The GenPets freaked me out so I searched the web to see if I could find anything “real” about them, even just a picture of one outside of the plastic package. No luck and only more disturbing images. See, for example: GenPet8. Heart-wrenchingly horrid… until you visit the artist’s website! See Adam Brandejs. There’s a distinct purpose as to why these images are meant to disturb, because, after all, they do not exist, except as a work of art.

  6. Nice… that pic of all those Gen-Pets reminds me of an H. R. Giger painting:

    Happy Father’s Day to Amanda’s dad as well… ;)

  8. Now we know what Friday’s Rube Goldberg segment was lacking–a maniacal Japanese MC!

Nice of Amanda to remember Paulie’s birthday. He wondered way back when what it would be like “When I’m 64″. Now he knows. Even genius billionaire pop icons are worthless putty in the hands of a beautiful woman.

Look where that got Sir Paul. And look where it gets we poor schlubs…at RB every day!

  9. I really believe that nothing that was shown on the show today could be “Art” as much as a feat of engineering.

Engineering can be artistic, but its not art.

  10. All those poor college funds and future poor college students.

Alas the golden college ’share’ is no more.

Bill Gates kills american higher education (excuse me im a european) I know you yanks have Microsoft shares in that college fund…. an american i spoke to at an it conference (not microsoft) described microsoft as ‘the’ funder of college for the kids.

Has the era of american technology ended - for Jeb Bush Bible college here american comes ?.

  12. Amanda asks, “What would I do if I owned MSFT shares? Buy? Sell? Hold?”

Well, I do own MSFT shares, and I’m holding them. In fact, part of my 401k contributions go towards buying MSFT shares. I’m not going to change that, and here’s why:

Microsoft transitioned years ago from being a “growth stock” to more of a blue-chip type stock. What that means is that you don’t buy MSFT particularly because you’re banking on the share price rising. You buy it for the dividends.

So please, bad mouth MSFT all you want! Play up the doom-and-gloom! Please, scare everyone off: I’m personally delighted to see the price go down, because that means my 401k contributions equal more shares for me. Which equals higher divident payemnts. Which get rolled into more share, etc., etc.

Microsoft isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. So, when I retire, I’m gonna have a pile of shares paying me dividends twice a year, and I won’t mind that one bit. Microsoft just announced that they had, what was it, a $12 BILLION dollar quarter? Cripes! That company makes over a billion dollars every MONTH in pure profit, baby. And part of that comes right back to we shareholders who get it. Stock price ain’t everything.

The thing that just about everybody on Wall Street misunderstands about Microsoft is the definition of “long term”. For Wall Street, “long term” is about three years. If a commodity isn’t going to see a substantial return in that amount of time, they consider it a bad investment. Microsoft, however, views “long term” as more like 10 years. That’s about how long it takes them–for better or worse–to really do well in any given market you care to name. GUI, databases, servers, messaging: Microsoft holds dominant market positions in all of those markets today, but it took them about ten years to get there from wherever they started. Few companies are willing to really plug away, year after year after year, until they win. Microsoft does. And when they do, they earn buckets and buckets of cash from their tenacity.

Personally, I get it. Success takes time. The .com bubble was an aberration driven by wild underestimates of how much time real success takes. When the three year “long term” was up, and the .coms hadn’t delivered the solution to world hunger, Wall Street gave up and went home. Microsoft gets it. If it takes 10 years for XBox to become the leading console, fine. If it takes 10 years for MSN Search to become better than Google, fine.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, you’re a fool if you think that in any of those markets, or dozens more you could name, Microsoft is going to give up and go home. They won’t. They’ll eventually win, to the betterment of their own bottom line, and the bottom line of investors smart enough to be getting a piece of those dividends.

  18. Wow!! I can’t belive it but amanda made it though a whole show without spewing any of her left wing crap or making fun of the president. Liberalism is a mental disorder. I thought for sure that when she starting talking about Paul Mccartny’s birthday that she was going to start singing that when I am 64 song I was getting ready to reach for my vomit bag. Did you see that liberal connie chung singing on her msnbc show. What a fruitcake. Michal savage is right liberalism is a metal disorder..

Was there a secret winner that I missed??

  25. About that knit-a-ferrari honours project (a different sort of software engineering)… Did anyone else notice the institution’s name, “Bath Spa University,” and envision classes in “towels” or “whirlpool,” or suspect a hoax? But no. It’s real, and in the city of Bath:

Why are there only some (but not all) episodes in the rss feed?

Well, anyways, keep up the good work, I’ll download new episodes manually for now.

  31. Thanks, When My GF first showed me the link for Genpets, I was disturbed, and didn’t realy know what to think. The first thing I thought of when I visited the site was sending the link to Rocketboom. I was at that time watching Rocketboom on my TiVo. My GF was “I want one no matter the cost. When she did some further investigating, she found it was just art, she moped for 2 day.
Anyway Thanks to everone at Rocketboom for the recognition. And to Amanda…

  32. Please do everyone a favor and refrain from using charts like the one shown in your MicroSoft bit. The chart is from 21 to 28. Use one that goes from 0 to 28 and your impact is lost, but the facts are presented in an unbiased manner.
If your goal is to mislead viewers, you are doing great. Note that in An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore never resorts to such misleading graphs or charts.
Also, it is LAME that you are using stock charts from AOL.
