Amanda and the crew at Rocketboom:
I see a webby in your future
Salut!
Amanda is a legend, of course she’s going to get a Webby.
Or and Oscar, They should make a catagory for that.
San Fran on Sunday, NYC on Monday - talk about jet setting!
Drew - I’m probably in the minority, but I would love it everyday was casual Friday!
Thats just me :)
No more footage? have it your way, RB. XD
Kudos to Rocketboom for a very well-edited piece that opened the door on the Webby Awards for those of us out here in ReaderViewerLand who couldn’t be there. An hours-long no-doubt-horribly-self-congratulatory ceremony boiled down to (mostly) essential highlights…thank you!
Was that Thomas L. Friedman, the quick interview in the middle of the video? Would love to see him interviewed on Rocketboom…
I think back to working as a busboy so I could save up $45 for cheap guitar. Then I see Prince throw a guitar over his head, crashing it to the stage, to mark the end of a song, and it makes me think very bad words.
I could tell him about The Urban Gateways program which would love to give his used (and unbroken) instruments to children. (http://www.urbangateways.org/new/musical.html)
Or I could tell him about the Steven Spring Foundation that collects used instruments to help all the New Orleans musicians that lost their means of earning a living in Hurricane Katrina. (http://stevenspringfoundation.org)
Prince is the best … end of story
Darn, I was hoping for a few tears over Karl today…oh well, there is always the Scooter trial to look forward to.
How sad for Prince. What’s next? State fairs and coffee shops?
amanda should have been there on the stage doing “something”, it would have really made sense.
what happened with the t-shirts design contest??? are you making money in the backwards with them??? well, i hope at least it’s invested in rb.
As Chet Atkins says “There are a lot of guitars that need to be smashed” Go Prince…
A cool performance by Prince that, hey, he didn’t need to do. Okay, he smashes a few guitars up very occasionally, think of all those guitar-makers he keeps in business!
Funny how everybody thought he’d gone mad in the mid-90s disappearing onto the internet to sell his music - now 10 years later and everybody has only just caught upto him! The coolest web visionary you’re likely to see.
At least Prince did something memorable.
Wow, it looks like Prince received a couple Webbys of his own (www.npgmusicclub.com). Not so sad after all. And perhaps he’ll make up for the guitar bashing with some donations to musicians–I’m sure RBers aren’t the only ones giving him heat.
Heh,
Prince’s guitar. So he tossed it away. So what? I thought it was amusing, but there’s no way it was shocking or offensive. You guys need to get out more.
And Jeeze, you’d think that Prince was the only thing today’s show was about. I mean Prince was cool and I liked it when he smashed his guitar. He was so full of angst and artistry. Isn’t he the coolest guy ever? And those glasses and his clothes were awesome. Oh yeah, what were all those geeks doing at his concert?
-I kid I kid….
No Rocketboom award no care….
Prince at the webby awards? awesome!
“Dude” beat me to it, but I’ll say it anyhow.
NEWSFLASH! KARL ROVE NOT TO BE INDICTED!
I guess we need a new drinking game! - Although some of us probably NEED a drink because of this…
Geeze, what’s with all the guitar comments. What is this, the ASPC-G. Why don’t you get together all the guitars that Prince, Hendrix, and Townsend beat up and file a class action suite.
I repeat Sam’s question….did RB get the attention it deserved?
Savage Irony: Tom Friedman and his ilk lose power as the world gets flatter. If they tell lies, the blog/vlog world will pounce. Thanks for paving the way Drew/Amanda… (sigh) I only wish you allowed conservative thought too!
There are poor near starving guitar makers out there who relly on musicians breaking their guitars! Nobody ever thinks about the hard working laborer who’s lifestyle is dependent on the disposableness of these music instruments for him to have repeat sales.
Everyone always like to think of the poor unemployed who need free things to live, but no one likes to care about the poor employed who need people to BUY things to live.
Nicely edited piece! Well done.
The Webby’s are just so 1999
It seems to me that what Thomas Friedman cares about is not “empowered individuals” but rather empowered corporations, who employ impoverished individuals effectively as virtual slaves.
Thomas Friedman brilliantly spun his compliment into a plug for his book… “what you are doing is great, that what my book is about…great stuff”
Prince it’s 2006 not 1967!
Maybe you should watch some old videos of The Who smashing their equipment. They were making a statement, one of rebellion. What was/is your point?
In my opinion some information is not absolutely true, but in general very good site.
“People like you who are carrying around cameras…”
- Thomas Friedman
Please… Did he have any idea who he was talking to?
Isn’t it cool, Amanda, that you have more credibility with your audience then the “person of the year”
It’s easier to write a book about theories then to bring it into existence. It’s easier to verbalize then materialize. Thanks RB for doing the latter.
What, no award for Jason Leopold and his buddies at Truthout for their Karl Rove scoop. I’m sure you will give us an update on how that is going.
Arianna Huffington/Winner, Politcal blog. I guess the Tom Hayden piece on Zarqawi as a U.S. agent put them over the top. I would have loved to see a list of Arianna’s award competitors.
Maybe next year KOS and the Webbys can meet at the same time to save on travel expenses.
Jamie, okay, you got me to laugh at the OJ comment! When is he going to find the real killer anyway!
I kind of liked Huffington years ago when she had a show with Al Franken, but these days she should win for “Best Political old BAG”, not blog.
Prince still has it!
The internet is really something that is evolving into something spectacular, and the Webbys will always be there to highlight just how great the net can really be.
Who said anything about Prince being/seeming rebellious. Far from it, the guitar smash was a lame attempt at “look at me, I’m still cool.”
As for The Who, it was their trademark which helped propel them to the top of the charts. A great marketing ploy that was supported by VOX (??) amps…who kept an assembly line going just for the WHO….
I can see them getting tired of the act, but of course the fans wanted them to keep smashing their equipment. Just like many here wanted Amanda to keep her glasses or do the Dervish Head Whirl thang.
At least Pete Townsend had the good sense to throw his broken guitar into the audience…from time to time, making one of his fan’s very very happy (and another going for plastic surgery)
My comment is late as I was checking other blogs. My observations of today’s rb:
1. No mention of Karl Rove.
2. No mention of the President being in Iraq before the media found out.
3. Prince is in Minneapolis?…duh!!!
4. rb’s episode was a grainy clip of the room that every other blogger and wannabe was in.
5. Now I see why ZE didn’t mention what he was doing in MN.
6. At least ZE pointed out that folks in MN were nice.
This way cooler…
Prince as musician…laying down some chops.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nOtQzPCqvE
I love Prince’s “older” music, but I was really dissappointed to see him on American Idol: if it’s possible for an individual to ‘jump the shark’ that was it for Prince.
Performing at The Webby’s is a start at making up for A.I.
(some day: ‘Manda dancing at The Webby’s….now that would be cool)
prince is playing a free concert in bryant park on friday morning! 7 AM
so. early, but free!
Hey fellow RB fans, what do think RB’s 5 word speech would have been if they won?
My guesses
1- Hello and good Monday, June…
2- [silence]
3- More than a pretty face
4- I’m Amanda. This is Rocketboom.
What’s your guess?
“Jensen, shut the f@#$ up.”
Prince? what a joke!
What happened to Amanda today? so many things going on today and they show Prince ???
Must be a nice day at the beach.
Amanda’s all depressed since Karl Rove is off the hook.
beauty contest in a slaughterhouse
One thing you can count on prince to do is play some song that no one has ever heard of and not playing any of his hits. He is such a faggot.
Smashed his guitar? He just dropped it… flamboyantly, sure, but I would not call that anything but dropping. I’m sure the guitar is fine.
As for the lack of Amanda, she is probably just hungover. I’m sure she’ll be back tomorrow… although if she’s not, then I’m guessing she has a black eye and is too embarassed to tell us how it happened ;)
Let me second the thought - thanks for the extended Robert Kahn speech. Very humbling to be in the presence of such real genius.
Drew and Da:
What a treat! Thanks so much for creating this well-edited piece. I enjoyed every second of it, and appreciate the additional Robert Kahn live action footage.
Cheers,
connie
*THIS* is why I love rocketboom.
does anybody know if prince’s song is available to buy?
i kinda like it alot!
cheers.chris
“Where are all the white people at?” ;)
Seriously, I can’t tell which is most disturbing:
1) The clear and apparent lack of racial diversity at the event
2) An also-ran providing the entertainment; the “cool” folks in the audience grooving like Prince was “happenin’”
3) Prince flopping his guitar after such a raucous performance
4) Rocketboom not winning a Webby
A few comments about Prince and the guitar smashing:
In response to PW Fenton, Prince does donate to charity. After Hurrican Katrina he wrote a song called SST/Brand New Orlean and proceeds from the sale went to victims.
In response to Tony–for years Prince has been throwing his guitars to his guitar tech. (See the Feb 2006 SNL performance for a recent example.) So I guess he’s not a poser.
It really shouldn’t be that serious. There are more important things to get upset about than whether some musician smashed/threw his guitar…how about US Foreign Policy, the AIDS crisis, Social Security, etc.
Just my two cents…
you can have now the gig of prince at webby-award: klick on url ;-)
Hey, /sms ;-), thanks! Prince is just the coolest. And it didn’t look at all like his guitar was hurt–it landed on the curtain edge.
Hey, did anybody else have too much free time and decode the binary in the extended video? I might be wrong, but I think it says “DiscoverDigital Objects ann Handles”. Somebody tell me if I’m wrong.
You’re right Martin… “Discover Digital Objects and Handles”
Amanda is a legend
