From a casting perspective, this is pretty clever. It’s so hard to find an actress or actor to play a part in a vlog, yet so easy to get a puppet to appear. Puppets are coerced into acting simply by inserting a hand into their behinds, at which point they become animated!
Over 50% of our electricity is produced by burning coal. More electric cars means more coal-burning power plants means more smoke stacks. Maybe Nuclear? Wind? …no… the popular media and residents of Nantucket don’t like that either. Maybe we should walk… =]
HMM - Tuned into the jet set show site + watched their current log. Granted - no swearing - but not really a kid appropriate show.
Amanda, your effort, or lack thereof shows in this case. How about sticking with shows that either feature your wonderful creative self, or give us some cool internet stuff to peruse.

it’s been awhile since I wuz a kid, so I’m not sure about this. Is there any chance one or both of the commentators will grow fangs, get exceptionally strong (for a puppet), avoid the sunlight and fight daemons? If so the WB has an opening in their fall lineup. You may have to change the name to “Smile Time , The Series”, though. While I don’t thinkl David Boreanaz is available to do the voice overs, James Marsters has expressed his willingness for a spinnoff, so maybe there’s still a possibility.

I watched a couple logs on the Jet Set site, and I’ll admit that the target audience is a little confusing (in its attempt to reach a range of audiences), but overall I think the concept is rather novel.
If you compare this show to Zoom on PBS, for example, you see that here, instead of excessive purity in content and fake grandiose smiles in presentation, we get a more progressive educational approach to the interests of pre-teens / teens. I mean, do kids want (and need) to learn how to create a potato battery? Or, would they rather be introduced to how to create a video game? Pretty neat, and much more 21st century.
Anyway, isn’t that what we appreciate most about Internet logs–how they diverge from the rules of television? And redefine the boundaries of education?

Hmmm, I don’t think she was serious about all of this, they can’t bring this weekly.. Maybe they should just ask the guy who used to make those “bloody” plush toys (as featured on the show a couple of weeks ago) to replace the 2 puppets with his own version of them. Concept is good. Is your target audience the 8 to 10yr old group? I love the idea of taking advantage of the interactive options available in vlogs that can’t be accomplished via traditional TV.
I have two suggestions:
1. Target a single topic and spend more time developing why it is important for me to pay attention.
2. Don’t insult my intelligence. Kids are WAY too smart. Compliment them by offering BOTH sides of the argument. They get the liberal side already all day at school. Why not be brave and show the positive aguments from both sides of a discussion and then let them continue their discovery based on the additional links you provide. Now THAT would be compelling!
It is ironic that electric cars can be just as polluting as regular cars thanks to the methods by which we go about getting electricity.

I imagine RB picked this segment to air because it best relates to the RB audience–quirky, yet informative, news. However, many of you might actually dig the other segments (sans puppets) and the thematic approach of the episodes in full–they did one week focused on working with videoblogs and the other focusing on video games. The idea has unlimited potential–there’s nothing else like it on the web.

Good points:
Using puppets, the dialog between puppets, Van Gogh content, global warming content
Bad points:
Celebrity news, “electric cars solves global warming”, not sure of target audience.
This is a good idea, but it seems a bit too mainstream and “popular news” oriented. They get bombarded with this junk in all other forms of media, why does Rocketboom feel the need to distribute the same content (referring to Bradgelia, global warming). The Van Gogh content was great, as it gives kids a window to something that “isn’t” being shown in the mass-media. (which is likely being pimped out for commercial porpoises)
The global warming coverage is tough because it’s a complex issue not solved by magic electric cars — kids aren’t stupid, but sometimes I think we dumb down information thinking it becomes more palatable to them, when we’re really just teaching kids to oversimplify issues in order to make quick decisions (i.e. this is good, this is bad)

I will 2nd (or 3rd) Zadi’s comment. Don’t judge jetset as a whole by the puppet sample. There is a nugget of something good within that vlog. I especially appreciate the D.I.Y. angles. (how to make your own vlog).

Not what I was looking for. There is a screaming lack of news for children out there, and I was hoping to see something like Rocketboom only toned down a notch (or more). If you guys could put something clever, informative, and as respectful of children’s intelligence as RB is to adult’s you’ll really have something. Amanda, I think you could pull it off. I also found myself put off by the stereotypes being reinforced by the puppets. I’m working really hard to combat the influences of society which discourage girls from “being smart” and taking an active interest in science. A female puppet with an art school cliche offering entertainment news teamed with a typical male nerd who of course can only speak intelligently about technology? Thanks. No.

I’m huge SNL fan, but every now and then there is a skit that just flops in my opinion, luckily for them they have another hour and half to make you forget about that.

i read one or two posts sayin that this show isn’t apropriate for kids under 15. wtf? that’s total bull. i knew people who started dealing drugs at age thirteen, and other people who lost their virginity at the same age. if a kid who is 14 can’t handle that, then they obviously have never spent a day outside their house.

I just wanted you to know that my daughter now thinks that “sucka” is an ok word to say at school because you said there was no swearing and that world is in the heading of the jet set show website. you may want to figure out what age group you are aiming for and gear your show toward them. Any also look in to what is commonly concidered a swear word by parents of young childern.
Well. This is the first time I came upon rocketboom. All I have to say to all of the people who posted unkind comments spewing vitriol against rocketboom and their expanding creative avenues should basically shut up. Go ahead and try making any video/film, etc. of the quality produced here. Lighting is a pain to do. Sound is a nightmare to handle and editing it all together is a time consuming monstrosity. And all of you condescending fools who think you are superior or clever buy cutting down the process and then throwing a curt throw-away compliment just to make yourself feel better (yes, that’s common, the throw-away compliment is for yourself, no for the other) can all take a long walk on a short pier.
When a person asks for commentary on a work, they are not asking for you to laden it with such utter negative energy; they want to know what works specifically and what does not work specifically. All of your excessive snooty adjectives are of little use in helping the creative process. That is why I don’t ask opinions from the general public, since the opinions always tend to be condescending; after all, 50% of the general public have below average intelligence. No, I am not slamming all of you who uttered unkind words further into the ground, it’s just plain old math. Think. No, really, think.
OK. Next. You might counter my argument here by saying that I am not being kind to the people who posted the negative comments. My parents always said, “Don’t lower your self to their standardsâ€Â. See, that doesn’t work. For example, if a monkey throws a banana in your face, saying that you won’t lower yourself to the monkey’s level doesn’t stop the monkey from throwing another banana into your face. The correct answer is to pick up the banana and throw it into the monkey’s face; then the monkey will learn not to do it again. Repeat until it stops. That’s game theory. (Oh sorry, you were still trying to figure out what an average was.)
