  • arcane jill says:

Ah, come on tell us what you really think!

  • haha, oh arnold. i liked the news pieces, especially the mark jenkins stuff

  • Tommer says:

    Huh? Your best effort?

  • What a bunch of crap!

I waited all day for this?

Come on JC you are better then crap on a stick!

  • Wyatt says:

wow...way too long a wait for one very uninspiring episode.

Poop on a stick jokes---how original...

Back to the drawing board, Rocketboom.

  • brite says:

Not bad, but I miss Joanne's sexay accent.
If you need a field correspondent in Poland - check my vlog about the city of Lodz: http://www.miastozinnejbeczki.blox.pl

  • Joanne is so pretty, just her smile lights up the video! No need to speak.
Really though, the news was fine, but the Ahhhhnold piece sucked.

  • J.W. says:

    Some advice:

    Go faster.

Joanne's silence was funny, but it needed a punch line.

  • crxvfr says:

    JC call in sick today?

  • tracycakes says:

let me guess.....the RB staff spent the weekend partying...

  • Maybe you should become a weekly vlog. Putting out an on time daily vlog worth watching seems to be too big a challenge for you.

  • scata says:

    piece of shit.

  • MoJo says:

What is the music? I like.

  • Tuesday says:

this one seemed a bit surreal...the dark stairs...locked doors. Not sure what the point was.

  • brem says:

    "Sois belle et tais-toi!"

  • Hiram says:

Some humorous shit, but the whole show lacked effective segues. I would have prefered the original speaking host format on this.

If it's suppose to be a joke, it's kind of lost on me.

  • Noam Samuel says:

Strange that the archive page says "daily with Amanda Cogdon" and has no 2.0. Was someone doing some lazy templating?

  • filmex says:

I found the Bush shit-on-a-stick art piece to be a timely exhibit reflecting the hypocrisy of our times whereby King George II can only adequately express himself to Tony Blair by utilizing the word "shit", yet any broadcast channels that convey this information can be fined $550,000 for indecency, thanks to the Witchfinder Pursuivant that King George II has placed in charge of the FCC.

A brilliant piece of reflective artistic expression. (Think they bought it, Drew?)

  • worried says:

what happened the brain get cooked this weekend! maybe steamed with humidity? And have you checked out Yahooo On the 9 . Are they copying your gig with alot of razz ma tazz commercialism.

  • Was that supposed to be funny?

Like the other guy said, I guess JC called in sick today =/

  • Finney says:

Ummm... before the Arnold piece, I would have said it was getting better and more away from "1.0". Then, woah. Talk about random and unintelligble. I still don't get it.

  • G.B. Andrews says:

Rocketboom 2.0 ... Where EVERY day is Casual Friday.

  • MagellanGuy says:

    More JC.
    Less AS.

Fooled by randomness? I don't think so.

Clips that are randomly thrown together look like clips that are randomly thrown together.

One more like this and you'll get a timeout. Do you understand?

  • Jason says:

Enjoyed this episode. Love the way you continue to challenge standard conventions, in many different ways.

I hope you keep it up even in the face of new viewers who don't quite get it.

  • steph babe says:

I liked it. Plus, I can't stand Bush and his administration, so I liked the first part, too.

I don't understand why all the critics want a Kubrick or Lynch production every day for three minutes... it's simply 'lite' entertainment.

I agree with an earlier poster... all you hardcore 'critics' should get a life.

  • ed says:

    Stay strong Drew.

  • roc21 says:

    Very funy!!

    Annoy

  • porkchop says:

The first half of the show was disgusting! Apparently Bush is hated THAT MUCH.

The second half of the show was enjoyable.

Andrew, don't you have more shows from the field? I enjoyed the buffalo show.

  • Robert says:

    One of your best.
    Chaplinesque associations.

  • Al says:

Thanks for teh explanation Drew - thought it was out of sequence. Wouldn't like to be you this week - keep it up though - and ignore those with such high expectations.

Good work - raised a smile - toast was good, but the Arnie thing could have gone!

  • drew olanoff says:

I'm all for trying new things and thinking outside of the box, but JoCo needs practice and she's getting better. Come on, let her stretch her legs out and dig in.

  • Shannon says:

FIRST THING FIRST. IF JONANNE DOES NOT LIKE GEORGE BUSH SHE NEEDS TO GO BACK TO ENGLAND.
SECOND THING IS THAT THE REASON THEY CHANGED THE NAME OF THAT STADIUM IS BECAUSE THEY WERE MAD AT ARNOLD BECUASE HE EXCUTED SOME DIRT BAG.

  • dani says:

I thought this was pretty darn good! Between the gorgeous background music and interspersal of dollish JC clips with the strange street art, the piece resulted in a dynamic artistic composition. I was also fascinated by the Stefan report--an alternative presentation style (kind of spooky and mysterious even) that was very entertaining. I loved the play in Stefan's voice and his use of voiceover to create the adventurous and curious mood. Wonderful! Today's show was a joy to watch and listen to over and over again.

  • narco says:

Weird, I actually liked this episode.

  • I guess I differ from most posting here. I thought it was one of the most clever episodes. I loved the first half (sometimes silence is golden!), and I enjoyed the second.

  • JDub says:

    Drew,

Even before I read your post, I thought today's piece looked thrown together.

    Music--ok.

Poo & president's mug--amateur, low-brow, unfunny. I'm all for a witty, clever critique of the President, but c'mon.

I would be interested to know if JC knew/agreed with the editorial decision to associate her likeness with crap (literally & figuratively).

I hate to think that quality should succumb to daily deadline pressure. I know you have more going on in life than RB, but did you (do you) really think this was a good idea? Would you have thought it was a good idea if you had another day to think about it?

As usual, JC was the only highlight. At least this proves that you know how to recognize and recruit talent.

    http://wantarevolution.blogspot.com/

  • Fritz says:

What were you thinking? You still have not changed the backdrop either......ughhh. C'mon

Change and rearrange and let Joanne speak

  • Phil says:

    I miss amanda

  • I liked it!

However, why try to fool us with clips of Joanne from the 13th? Immediately seems like a trick.

You should fire her since France is farther than LA.

  • qarl says:

i liked it. all this anger is weird. what's wrong with you people?

  • ohnonichole says:

wow, i don't understand the unpopular and angry vote here. i rather liked today's entry ... quite a bit.

  • It never ceases to amaze me just how hateful so many viewers are. If you don't like the show anymore, STOP WATCHING IT and move on with your life and quit bringing everyone down.

And guys... I loved Amanda too, but come on already... get over it. Joanne's cool and all good things must end. Now I just wish the negative messages would. It's childish and sad.

It's true that this was a bizarre episode, but that's okay. It's neat when the show mixes things up a bit.

  • midnighttlc says:

comeon this blew chucks. I use enjoy watching Rocketboom but now I find it pointless and found enjoyment over at http://www.mobuzz.com/vlog/index_en.html

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger's name got removed from the stadium on December 26 2005 (!). Your swiss field person was a bit slow this time.

Besides, i like Joanne better than Amanda. She can do everything Amanda can do, and what's more, she's funnier. Amanda should stop whining about her former employer and start something new.

  • randulo says:

Nice change! I like Rocketboom better now than before! I think there's improved talent now.

  • Usually I'm on the side of RB but seriously today was a low - what was that Schwarzenegger report about?

Hope that was a one off

  • I like it I like it, Really Obtuse, you do good

  • Earlier, it was suggested that Rocketboom become a weekly, since daily seems a failed challenge, sans Amanda. Perhaps three times a week might be a good interm schedule.

  • Hi,

I read the various comments from today as well as the precedents.

We can note that the innovation in an established concept seems to have evil to pass, even if we can observe clearly that there is a creative will.

Another perception : having seen certain shows with Amanda, carrying a dynamics strongly associated with American sensitivity, I could think that the Joanne arrival bring a broader vision, with connotations
posted in Europe. (France, Scandinavia, etc)

Is it this aspiration which ( American ) people less appreciate in Rocketboom 2.0 ?

As a renewal of the concept seems wished, let us be tolerant
and let us leave a little time for the new one to be established.

    S.

  • Well, as the saying goes, "they can't all be gems".

It was pretty obvious to me that all the shots of Joanne were outakes and snippets from a previous episode. And, like JDub, I wondered if she had any idea her image was going to be spliced betwixt lots of crap.

Well, Drew, I can't say I cared for today's effort but tomorrow is another day. It ain't easy what you're doing but I applaud your determination to get something up no matter what.

I'm a fan. But today really truly sucked. But that's only my opinion. Still rootin' for ya, though.

  • range says:

    Hm.
    Not a lot of news.
The whole thing in Austria wasn't that good.

You should do something on Parkour.
Bit of a let down compared to Friday's episode.

  • Aquinas says:

Civility in political discourse is appreciated.
Hope next time you can have a more meaningful (& appealing) contribution.

  • Dr.Moore says:

Many more like this and you are history

  • capo says:

How do you say "punt" in German?

  • TekPhreak says:

joanne, I get the impression you really have something on your mind. Almost as if you are on the cusp of speaking.

But seriously If we wanted a clip show we could surely find items like those ourselves just by surfing the web.I would like to know why you would do a show like this? Is this some sort of ploy or wierd reverse psycological trick to get Amanda back?

Psst, Part of enjoying the show is listening to the HOST of the show. If you have decided to fire joanne colon as well as Amanda at least give her some Airtime to tell her side of the story.

  • jb says:

The show would have been better if I knew why the UK has a target on it!!!

  • Doc T. says:

Drew, thanks for filling us in on JC being out of town. We'll take this into account as we tune in - er, click on - this week's shows.

Being one of the newcomers to RB, I've gone through a few of this year & last year's AC shows in the archives and while I can see how she garnered a fan base with her looks and ingenuousness, there is something about her that really grates on my nerves and is probably the reason RB 1.0 never caught on with me. RB 2.0 much more to my liking, keep up the good work.

  • I liked the street art, the bus-cycle, and the mouse pointer kite. Those were enough to make it good. The quiet Joanne was creative. (Thanks for explaining, Drew.) I wonder if the confused readers neglect to follow the story links below the video?

  • nebraskazac says:

Awesome. Nailed it! The little glimpses of your expressions between clips of Bush on a stick were priceless. Funny that so few caught it. Rock on.

  • I see George is still hanging out with the same old crowd.

  • Sher says:

Well, it appears that Amanda's contribution to the show is becoming obvious. Without her writing talents and observational quips, RB just doesn't seem to have a point (other than maybe having a sexy host appeal to young, or otherwise (!) males).

Sorry, but RB has gone from a daily must-view to maybe-once-in-a-while-I'll-check-back kind of thing. No fun anymore.

  • drifter says:

I wonder if Ms. Colan appreciates what you did to her today? I had guessed that she had more class than that.

Regardless of political bent, it's got to be impossible for a civil, thinking person to respect that Bush piece. As much as I value your liberty of expression, I also value a level of personal dignity, which you obviously don't share. I plan to keep my RB vodcast subscription for now, but I'm not keen on being associated with such nasty material by recommending it to others, so I won't be providing any more WOM advertizing. As of today, I'm a closet RB junkie. ...and I'm not a new RB'er, either.

  • anonymous says:

kinda lame today...what was the wait for?

  • Jarno says:

Surely Joanne can do better than just sit and smile... I'm disappointed.

  • jazzybc says:

Hey Midnighttlc - I just watched an episode on www.mobuzz.com and banal is the word that comes to mind.
RB with either amanda or the spliced in joanne is much more dynamic. All I can say is if mobuzz is your entertainment then fill your boots my friend.

I thought the bush flags connected to the shit was not a statement of what was thought about the president but rather a comment on the coarseness of his language as caught on the open mikes at the g-8 summit in his conversation with tony blair.

I liked the arnold piece, especially the taped over names. What a statement.
How many times have they been buzzed and heard "Asta la Vista baby"

Isn't the hostess from south africa?

Don't ya think that drew planned this whole uproar with amanda just to generate the million dollars of free publicity and if you think that then do you agree that he is evil or is it just business?

  • whatever says:

I've followed since Amanda left (I watched Amanda for a few months at the start, but the continual political viewpoints got tiring (even when I agreed)). Today's show reminded me of why I stopped watching.

If RB sinks, it won't be because Amanda left (I think JC is a great replacement). It'll be because of shows like today. I hope that your writers understand that you have your audience at a fickle point. Many of us are deciding whether to make your work a part of our day (most of us want to, I think).

I personally would love to continue watching RB. I want you to do well (and things started to look promising after last week). I'm sure I'll try you again, but for now, this hot/cold quality is too frustrating. It's like watching a friend trying to do something new, and you're cheering for them...but they can't deliver. After a while, you stop watching because it's painful.

  • Rick A. says:

Today's RB was a bit disjointed, but the music was both appropriate and beautiful, and all of the segments were excellent. Except the Bush piece: that was passionate, but fundamentally dull, even if you hate Bush.

Drew, I understand your scheduling problem with JC. The way to handle this gracefully would have been to make a brief announcement yourself and then either host the show this week or do without.

  • cw says:

I enjoyed the show--- it was typical RB creativity... unexpected... funny ... no explanation necessary....

And silence to all of you critics-- If that was Amanda pausing with the non-verbals - you'd be all over the comments board with raves...

If you miss Amanda that much - leave... and be gone forever... Please get over it - high schoolers.. it's not the end of the vblogosphere...

JoCo has been strong in these early days... And Andrew's talent as a producer is starting to shine through again...

    Cheers-

  • Quake says:

obviously RB is going to join aBS,cBS, nBS, and cnn Lies today with their left liberal point of view.

    watch Fox News. eff rocketboom.

  • GrayApple says:

Wow... :( Sad to say this is the worst rocketboom I've ever seen.
I know you're trying to bring a new spin on Rocketboom since Amanda left/chucked out, but this is just sad.
Joanne - Please come up with something better tomorrow!

  • I loved it. Amanda was great... Joanne is awesome. It takes a certain level of hotness/personality to pull off a daily news cast without actually saying anything.
I think Rocketboom needs to do a little better job explaining to the old users what the new show is.

  • Clayton says:

Once again, Rockboom is crap. Literally. There is far too much crap on Rocketboom these days... You've almost lost me as a viewer... A few more like this and my time will be better suited elsewhere.

  • anon alas says:

Didn't I see these stories on BB over the weekend?

Seriously, I'm not trying to be mean here, but the whole accusation that Amanda wasn't also helping produce the show is getting harder to believe.

This is all rather "old" material, no? Not just the outtakes that are JC's portion.

Didn't you know JC was going to be in France? If that trip was planned when she came on board, perhaps a little advance "producing" would have been in order so that you had something ready for today.

  • Chumpy says:

Okay show...I would have posted somewhere at the beginning that JC was gone so I wouldn't have been wondering what I was watching. But anything with Bush in poop works for me!!!

  • Ab says:

    I don't get it...

  • d henry says:

Liked how you photographed Joanne. She is delightful. Stooped too low on Bush. (he deserves worse but this was sophomoreish I believe). And the Arnold S. stuff I didn't like so much. But I don't mean to be so critical. Rocketboom is good, lively, and challenging and I'm there to see what you do. The episode was good. Keep it up!

  • Phreelosophy says:

great show. surprised that so many were so offended, perhaps for some this (the bush part specially) was too close to comfort ?

But come on, don't accuse someone of being sophmoric because of low brow humor and then act mad because a 'foreigner' critisized the president.... ironic!

Thanks for a good the laughs!

  • Steven says:

    I love cheesecake.

  • Benji says:

Eh... the episode was lame; i felt i waiting for nothing but i enjoy watching joanne :) thats something worth waiting for.

  • this was the ABSOLUTE worst show, EVER!

  • thomocracy says:

i'm starting to think that andrew has really thought out this joanne colan thing. amanda wasn't working out because she didn't want to be JUST the face of rb, she wished to have a driving influence on what rb was and would become. she wished to voice her creativity and ideas with the rest of us. so she's out and andrew's solved his problem. joanne colan, the FACE of rb. voice need not apply.

  • Bush flags on scat. Well, thats just brilliant. It's nice to know your insults have an important message and aren't just pointless debasing, since that would just be inane. Say what you will about Ann Coulter and her rants. But at least her invectives reflect a thought out argument.

  • iDrifter says:

    Well said J.C.
Shannon: You wear white robes with hood and burn crosses too?

  • B-man 2.0 says:

AS a longtime viewer of RB, I've seen ONE episode since the great debacle that I truly enjoyed; that was last Friday's casual show.

This is the only vlog I watch. Besides who has the f&^&cking time except for those belonging to the teen set. So I'll give it a few more weeks and see where it's going.

I used to be entertained, now it has turned into a rather BORING SOAP OPERA.

Why not just show fish floating in a tank for the next 2 weeks.

  • orthosdoc says:

Really did not enjoy this one-trying to enjoy it for the sake of Rocketboom butttt, noooo.

  • emma says:

If you're gonna be using crap to define yourself, I would actually like Amanda to come back..Are you trying to be underground? Ridiculous!!I would prefer if you go on teaching us usefull stuff like the laces technique with the velcro stud...

  • suki says:

1 vote for turning off comments for a 3-week cooling-off period.

  • wannab says:

high time to consider your options. they are few.

  • logistic says:

So an audio-visual statement dissing the President has been made. If there were some intelligent -and constructive- criticism behind it, I would have appreciated it better. But there wasn't, and what we got was a sophomoric wordless rant. This could have been an opportunity for effective election propaganda, but it was lost, all because of Bush Derangement Syndrome. This is why the Democrats will not win the Presidency in 2008. Grow up.

  • tracycakes says:

Why are we upset over negative comments? All "comments" aren't going to be positive. Doesn't it go to show how truly well-liked Friday's show was? It might be hard to take, but I think these comments are informative and not necessarily mean spirited. Are we all supposed not to say anything unless it's nice?

I understand the difficulties the show must be having. At the same time, I think it's time to step up to the plate. There's something special going on here. Be as avant garde as you like, but not at the expense of professionalism. Now is the time.

  • Disappointed says:

    This episode was S*it.

  • GAR says:

49% was cheap considering 51% of nothing is still nothing.

Looks like you might have hard balled yourself out of a show.

I know how it feels. I have screwed myself out of a good thing more than once because I stuck to my guns when I should have just given in.

Sometimes life is much better when you just give in.

    Maybe you should start over.

  • randyedmonds says:

like the version 1 rocketboom, but v 2.0 is good too. Its more artistic.

  • Alf says:

Smile is worth more than 10,000 words.

Yes. Governator is sucks but the schwarzeneger part is as well.

  • HARTLESS says:

Did the bloody Colon-bi-otch produce the feces in this episode? It was bad enough listening to A-man-duh's liberal blabbering but to have a foreigner insult me on U.S. soil is unacceptable. If europe is sooo cool, why did this female hound have to come across the pond to piss us off?!?

  • yeah, it was a stupid show. yes, jeremy, you are the only one who liked it. you should reevaluate your taste and intellegence.
And regardless of his point, settingthelefttone needs to write sentances that are better "though out." i can't wait until Joanne gets back. today really stunk. not looking forward to tomorrows show. but im hoping wednesday will be better.

  • HARTLESS says:

p.s. Did anyone hear who won the Tour de France? I had to work this weekend and missed the finale. What's that? Another American won...his name is Landis...that's awesome!

  • J Bollman says:

For comparison JoAnne needs to remake the Snakes on a Plane episode.

  • Hartless makes some salient points, albeit lamely. It is one thing to brook the smarmy self-righteous smugness of a New Yorker. To have a foreign national or recent immigrant criticize her host country is a bit much for it's citizens to have to take. It's very bad form. But, since this was a "clip" show I wonder what Joanne really thought of being associated with that initial story. I wonder, but I really don't want to know. One thing I loved about her first few shows was the return to a less politicized format. And really, she should probably not go in that direction.

  • boomer2006 says:

Joanne is ok, but Amanda has something very special. I think it was that energy and excitement. You can't replicate that with acting.

  • Adult Hood says:

These things are so subjective; I never understood why RB was so talked about when I first saw it. I believe the potential of RB now, with joana is much better, I like her presence much more than the other woman's, but then I'm not a follower and had only sat through a few shows before.

  • us says:

Drew, is this your creative side? if so it looks as if Parsons has paid off!

  • Luis says:

I was really amused by the first half, then suddenly I fell asleep and I had a nightmare about Schwarzenegger.... strange thing.

However, don't despair, shit happens, even to the directors and writers and hosts.

And God, thanks for sending Amanda to her daddy's house and bringing us Joanne.

  • Cassidy says:

i thought this episode was fun and informative. i liked the change with no voice. you guys always keep it creative .....

Joanne, I think you're doing great. Thanks for stepping in

  • I thought this the best one yet! And I'm happy to be amongst the minority. But it seems you can't be too obtuse for Americans. Oh and for heavens sake don't poo on the President - he's doing such a good job of spreading "democracy" throughtout the world.

  • Sponky says:

For the JC lovers like me:

    http://joannecolanhottie.blogspot.com/

  • dedums says:

Thought this was interesting way to deal with lack of JoCo. Why some of the folks seem to think she was personally dissing the Shrub, I'm not sure. Maybe they are hoping he gives them a shoulder rub, eh? Quite the hyper lot of viewers. I particularily like the cursor kite!

  • Anna says:

    strange beginning and no news!
well, that was the worst show i've ever seen on rocketboom, sorry to say so.

That about Schwarzenegger would have been better placed in it's own 'episode' with more information.
Didn't fit with the beginning, as though you needed something to fill in.

  • ralph says:

joanne - youre great. Please keep on being this natural. And dont be only interim :>

STAY JUST A LITTLE BIT LONGER !!!

    Ralph from germany

  • argo says:

Barron knows what he's doing... creatively. That the last pretty face garnered 49% of RB doesn't speak for his business sense.

This kind of insane generosity has been hobbling 'post-modern' western 'civilization'. Hopefully you will learn from your mistake!

    Best,
    a.

  • jasorn says:

Nice work illustrating how dumb poop on a stick jokes are when it comes to heads of states. I don't quite get the folks claiming this episode sucks. I wonder what their vlogs are like.

  • DrIck2 says:

    1. I don't care whether the message is pro- or anti-Bush, the jingos who rail that Joanne or anyone here doesn't have the right to free speech are the ones who are anti-American and unpatriotic. The ones who dare to critize the government when they think it is wrong are the people who really love America.

    2. RB is spent and hunting for fresh ideas, for the moment at least. The host sitting there silently was already done, to better effect, for an entire episode, with no cutaways, with the previous host, just sort of grimacing and squirming. Even the music sounded like a reprise of the tap-tap song played behind the Mentos and Diet Coke fountain.

    3. My advice: hire a writer SOON. You can't do it yourself. There are plenty of starving writers/ comedians out there who will work for what you can afford to pay them. The audience will only sit still so long before it begins to trail off. It's already gone from a "must see" to a "oh yeah I haven't checked that out today." This audience may only happen once in a lifetime. Don't fritter it away.

  • Zapohd says:

This show is doing just fine - a significant improvement over 1.0 - perhaps all it really needs now is a new audience?

  • Grawp says:

Does a Bush shit in the woods? Apparently so.

  • packie says:

Way to go Drew! We go from a couple of wonderful and creative features - I'm referring to the Finnish design and shoe tying episodes - to literally crap.

I would much rather see a rerun. If you don't want to reshow Amanda how about a field show? The one about friendly robots comes to mind.

Or how about bringing in some additional correspondents for days when Joanne can't be there. Maybe you could tap into the student base in NYC, or you could find some folks that are doing good public access TV.

If this is going to be a professional effort you have to have a plan "B' to deal with situations.

I want to see creative, inspiring and fun episodes that I can share with my kids. In my book the best RB episodes have always included those elements.

  • Reminded me of:
    http://www.rocketboom.com/vlog/archives/2006/04/rb_06_apr_26.html
    But not as good.

  • Milt says:

I liked it. But then I really like Joanne's smile. And the germans (austrians?) were so good. Love that german kino mentality. Choos!
    Milt

I actually liked how you put this together in Joanne's absence. Reminds me of an old favorite episode of Quincy that was filmed, edited and aired while jack Klugman was out sick. In the episode they had him solving a case by placing the occasional phone callto his sidekick from a hospital bed and they used old unaired clips of him.

    Seriously!

You gotsta do what you gotsta do!

Loved it! But just seeing Joanne is pure joy!

I can't believe there are Republicans, let alone Bush supporters even rearing their ugly heads. C'mon, this site is NOT for you! Go listen to Fox or Chris Matthews or one of those other asswipes that will lie to you.

    Remember, "the bewildered herd."

    Now that's you!

  • Jason says:

Chris Matthews worked for a Tip O'Neill you idiot, former Speaker of the House. Arnold should be commended for having a murderer executed.

  • Does anybody know the name of the music backing the first half of this one?
