Contrary to the way I thought I would feel I very much enjoyed yesterday’s show. I can describe today’s show with one word; yawn.
Andrew took pains to defend himself at CaseCamp albeit with a good deal of self-deprecation. He virtually touted himself as the sole creative force working behind the scenes of Rocketboom in his previously posted “FACT” list.
From yesterday’s show it appears that Andrew can “bring it,” but can he consistently hit his marks.
Between yesterday’s 9 rated show and today’s 3 rated show, on a scale of 1 to 10, I am not sure where Rocketboom will end up. I am willing, though, to reserve judgment until the interim host becomes permanent or there is a replacement.
And although I miss Amanda, I think Joanne is doing a lovely job.
the camera work in the field piece was nice, the subject matter was dull as a hammer…

The new host’s voice is irritating… i generally like british accents, but this one… not so pleasing.

By the way you guys, RB has not been producing much lately; doesn’t this seem to indicate Amanda left unexpectedly? Demonizing A. Baron seems to have become fashionable. Sure, he’s a socialist and should be hanged for it, but give him a bit of slack here, just a chance until next week.

Agree with a previous comment that the keyboard needs to go. I’d change the map background too. Both relate too much to Amanda era.
The quality of the show has been the writing as well as Amanda’s quirky delivery. But it began with content and good writing. As soon as Joanne exerts her own personality into the role, I am sure 2.0 will be even better.
Just remember though, Microsoft never gets anything right until V3. I’m pulling for you to beat that curve!

One more thing… the soundtrack for the buffalo clip is a concert composed by Andrew Baron named “Ten Concertos for the Wind, 2001″. This Andrew guy an artist, for that reason I am rooting for the continued success of RocketBoom and hope he continues using it as a channel for his displaying his talent.

This piece is familar, I’ve heard it used on rocketboom before. I like it.
For God sakes, people. It isn’t Amanda. She is talking like a NORMAL PERSON. That alone makes RB 2.0 a hell of a lot better. Being from Australia, I am used to the British accent, but I can understand the reticence of those of you from the US, who may need subtitles.

First off, I’m not sure why so many people have to be so hypercritical, I mean… it’s just uncalled for. But back to my own comment:
Great video, a little random and more in the casual Friday style actually. Joanne is already growing on me more by the minute, she’s not Amanda… nor is she supposed to be. I like her though. Overall great show today.
This is just the second episode of Rocketboom’s new era and some people are talking about the end and such. What on earth happens? When Amanda was in front of the camera there were also weaker (and stronger) episodes. It is difficult to mantain certain level. Come on, they’ve just started again after an uncertainty period…
And I don’t know what the deal is with Joanne’s accent. Sound like a man? NO (ever heard/talked to a british woman before?j) Annoying? No way and in fact I like it, but this is subjective, so I’ll leave at that. Difficult to understand? Well, if I, who am not a native english speaker, can catch all the words and the meaning, I don’t know what the problem is.
PS: Someone said “all these brits everywhere in the media. Let Americans do the job!”. Well, isn’t America the land of opportunities (for everybody). Look at Schwarzenegger, for example. Guess you were complaining then. Oh well…
This is quite different from the original Rocketboom, I must say, but very good, anyway.
It’s good to have RocketBoom back. I found Andrew’s music with the buffalo documentary visuals a calm, meditative experience. Exactly what I’ve come to expect from RocketBoom: I never know what to expect. That keeps me coming back.
Oh, and 49%/51% is obviously as close to an equal parnership as you could make it initially, and you should think about that. Best of luck to all concerned.
The only thing constant is change.
RB will hit stride soon enough and our new host will feel more comfortable. Andrew will get his grove back and dig up some more interesting and pressing content.
I’ll give this a few weeks and see how it grows on me.
Joanne, you are entirely too cute! I’ll refrain from badmouthing the previous host, because that’s not doing anyone any favors, but you seem very genuine and I think RB will benefit from such new blood. Keep up the good work, and don’t pay any attention to the bitchy commentors. As I said: that kind of negativity doesn’t do anyone any favors, and that goes double for them!
Here in South Dakota we have buffalo and we have buffalo butts….I prefer to look at the buffalo. Joanne is HOT !!
I have been a RB fan since it’s onset, and I find Joanne endearing and quite watchable.
The buffalo piece on the otherhand seemed like a last minute decision which could have used a surprise ending, perhaps the Monty Python foot coming down with a thud as buffalo gore spurts between toes.

To those complaining about the buffalo, please remember that RB recently aired an episode about a piece of rope and everyone thought it was dandy.
RB content does need to get consistently better — not predictable. The show’s eccentric and eclectic nature is part of its appeal, but that doesn’t mean it has to be so uneven.
RB has a charming, home-made quality, but so did TV in 1949. Audience expectations will rise.
Hire half a dozen stringers who can write gags, think of funny little bits of business for Joanne to do, and pitch story ideas. You’d only pay for what you used. Your production costs will increase some, but it will be an investment in growth.
RB’s efforts at serious journalism are interesting, but tend to be half-baked. There are plenty of eager journalists. Find one to act as consultant.
Shifting the main appeal of RB from the host to the content will be a more sound business model.
There’s no reason in principle that 10 years from now people couldn’t be watching the Rocketboom network and reading Rocketboom magazine.
Many RB viewers are in “harshly scrutinize and judge” mode.
Don’t let it shake your confidence. As you know, you’ve got something special here.

GOD’s comment (scroll up), I think, is not quite correct. I believe Joanne did use the word “entitled” correctly. Entitled can mean “to give a name to” or “to give a right to”. In the United States we typically just use it to mean the latter. Joanne’s not wrong; she’s just British.
This was an interesting piece I viewed as a metaphor for traditional advertising.

I find it hilarious that the 2.0 shills are so afraid of criticism after the many (and often dubious of origin) comments praising yesterdays episode. The best part of this media is that it doesn’t hold your hand. If you do something right, they’ll congratulate you, if it sucks (like today), well, you’ll hear about it.

What was the “rocketboom hook” for the buffalo piece? For that matter was there ANY point to it? That was totally lame, as was the comment about “gearing up” for the news. The news happens, you report it. There’s no “gearing up” required to reading a script.

She’s okay. Much more low-key than Amanda. However, her accent and delivery emphasize the echo in the room. Perhaps a table-top microphone (a la Larry King) would help reduce the “space” I seem to hear. Good work (though Ze Frank has captured your audience for daily internet comedy).
New host is promising but I agree with those who say the old cutesy conventions (key tap, map (maybe get a new, different map?), chirpy music, etc etc) should be ditched. Amanda could pull it off because she’s kind of dorky, but the new host is too polished for that stuff. If you notch it up to her level, you’ll be gold.
I prefer Joanne to Amanda. More mature, smoother, less quirky, easier to listen to (even with the accent). Sure, I miss Amanda’s cleavage, but that’s not what RB is really about. I accept the buffalo piece for what it is, a placeholder until RB gets its rhythm back. No problem. Keep going.
I am hoping that this episode is a part of a brilliant plan to transition to the new RB…you know, create the lowest point you can as a benchmark, so when you present the real stuff it will look fantastic. A Phoenix rising from the ashes, so to speak.

I think what pisses people off most about this whole mess is that Andrew was given a gift with this Rocket Boom deal and now is royally f’ing it up. Kind of like a Daryl Strawberry scene. Most of us dream of an opportunity like this. To see someone screw it up is dissapointing and a real pisser. End of rant.

I’m not trying to say that it’s easy to write/produce an episode of RB… but you’ve got the equipment, the crew, the host, the distribution, and the audience. What are you waiting for?

I’ve seen 20 second of her and she’s already better than Congdon. Just keep her from acting like an idiot and the show will be 100 times better.
It’s time to move beyond the fact that Amanda Congdon is no longer the host of Rocketboom. A new host is undoubtedly going to bring a different style.
Personal attacks against Joanne Colan because of her voice or anything else unrelated to actual content are tacky. If you don’t like the show, quit watching.
For the 300,000 viewers that are ready to jump ship with Ms. Congdon, there are 300,000 more who will be attracted to Ms. Colan’s style. That’s what too many of the dissendents fail to see: They’re not the only people who like video blogs and themed content. I think this change will probably lose a bunch of regular viewers, but Andrew Barron has many more to gain with the change. You all forget the Web is not a private club or that Rocketboom is just for the few people who discovered it a year and a half ago (and I happen to be one of those people).
It’s okay to criticize, but offer solutions when you do, or come up with a video blog idea and put it out as regularly as the staff of this show does. Put your money where your mouth is. It’s easy to criticize and villify from the sidelines. Don’t like what you see here? Well, do something!
That way, you’re making a statement and taking action and not just calling people names.

I am not quite sure what to say about the buffalo bit, but guys…. seriously, it’s fine for you to miss Amanda, but she is not here, she is elsewhere - Joanne has done a great job so far stepping in and it will take a little while to transistion, give her a break. She’s doing a good job so far and She’s pretty dang sexy in my book - I love the accent too. Amanda is/was great but it’s not fair to try and say that Joanne has to be Amanda 2.0 - that’s not who she is. Those who do not like the new show can drop off and find a new show to watch. Those who like the show will stay on. New fans will replace those who drop off. If the viewership drops off permanently then RB will know it needs to change or die. That’s the way things work. No need to be mean to someone who comes across as very sweet to me. I think they will do fine myself. Good job Joanne - look forward to seeing you grow in your new role.

while amanda had her sort of particular addictiveness, I think that it’s been proven that she wasn’t the full draw and sweetness of rocketboom. i love this site. i think joanne is doing a hell of a job. good hustle, joanne.

Ok, Im new to RB, based on all the commotion Ive seen in the media lately regarding the soap opera that is AC/AB.
I liked yesterdays show, thought it was nicely done.
However, today’s may have just lost a new viewer as quick as it was gained.
Joanne welcome to the scene. I’m sure you’ll do fine. A small bit of advice for the RB Staff though. Please consider Framing Joane in new format? The Map, the keyboard click, the postures, even the wording are so recognizable as “Amanda” It’s simply not fair to Joane to cram her into something that may not fit her. I Truly think I could be a Joane Fan but I wanna get to know Joane for herself as an RB Anchor.. not as an Amanda clone. Please, I beg you… Allow Joane to find her own form and grace as you step forward into RB’s next evolution.

Nothing wrong with Joanie, and RB may survive just fine, but I think it was Amanda’s delivery, personality and sense of humor that made RB special. Kinda like how Sarah Silverman’s jokes, if you read them on a page, appear to be horrible … until you see and hear her deliver them. Not that RB’s content is terrible, in fact, the content in the next few weeks may be the one thing that will determine whether RB becomes “just another vlog.” Amanda could get away with it on days the content was not the best; I’m not sure Joanie could. It may turn out that the only vlog I see every day now is the great Ze Frank. But we shall see. Good luck to all.
I never heard of RocketBoom before this whole Amanda thing came up. I watched some of her pieces in the Archives and checked out her piece on unboomed, and to be honest, whats the big deal? She didn’t seem all that great and she was rather annoying.
I’ve seen two pieces by Joanne and I have to say she’s much better than Amanda. I would much rather watch Joanne than Amanda.
With that being said, uh, what the hell was that buffalo piece about. I don’t get it?

Your voice is great. I like your accent.
The heat will cool and you will find your groove. Ignore overly negative comments. They are not directed at you. People are simply sticking up for Amanda. She made friends with plenty of viewers and this is their way of sticking up for her.
Eventually you will befriend many viewers too… and eventually you will have those that will stick up for you.

Longtime daily Rocketboom viewer and I am willing to give Joanne a chance but this SUCKED. Is this what we have to look forward to?
My impression is that Joanne is an Amanda clone with a more serious attitude and smaller breasts. She needs to be a liitle more “Monty Python” and less “royal Family” to make this fly. As for the other, I have to say the tight T-shirts will be missed.
I’m willing to give this new thing a shot. However, it wasnt that wise to promise a new show last monday, and a revamped RB this Monday. Two misses in a row would be a bad thing.
That said, this is a more of a Rebooted situation. It took Amanda awhile to get her groove and I’m sure the new host will be the same. However I would also advise against things like clicking on the keyboard, it just doesnt seem natural for the new host. Let her choose her own quirks. And perhaps casual fridays can wait a bit.
The past two shows remind me of when Colin Quinn took over weekend update on SNL. Hopefully, you can turn it into The Daily Show. (overused comparison I know)
And for now, try more humor! get us with a laugh, cause if it’s more focus on Bison gazing… well, the less said the better.

For all of us who wondered what a Boise public access UHF channel version of “Koyannisqatsi” might look like, I guess now we know.
This whole RB immolation is good theatre if nothing else. One imagines Andrew sees himself as Jack Warner, with his leading ladies little more than interchangeable cogs in the Drew Machine.
Why anyone would choose to kill the Golden Goose just when there is serious cash to be made defies speculation.
Joanne seems perfectly nice, in a very ordinary sort of way. One feels they’ve stumbled upon “Manchester UK This Morning”, with no discernable reason to put down the remote.
It’s hard to imagine Andrew was ever quite cognizant of Amanda’s uniqueness, or else it seems implicit in common sense that he would have sold another week’s advertising, bought the equipment needed to do a bi-coastal broadcast, and continued to make history.
The human mind is a mysterious and often baffling thing.
Sadly, Rocketboom will now be removed from my favorites list. I have little need for, or patience with buffalo, people with British accents, or crappy fillers to waste my time.

This is great stuff, really…from the comments not a lot of people have thought about why they really come to Rocketboom. It’s art .
We are all confronted with an endless stream of media and conditioned to expect the sensational bollocks that is dished out to us from those that usually want some thing from us, these guys, Rocket Boom ask for nothing and do this for free. Todays free roaming bovines was a fantastic piece, it’s challenged your mind and altered your expectations. We all need more of this.
Sitting down here in Australia it’s great to see this Buffalo footage thank you and nice music piece milt…noticed the marker on the UK…bit worried that Joanne has turned her back on Australia!

So much more magnetic than Amanda. Joanne is so subtle, lithe and warm. She brings a level of low key but real sophistication to the program.

I am so glad Amanda is gone, now I can watch this and not feel embarrassed. The new women is very fine, sophisticated, but she seems a little nervous. I think it was a bit ambitious to reboot RB right away. Andrew should have taken a week, developed some ideas, and got used to working with the new girl. Of course it’s not her fault; Andrew just needs to figure some stuff out. I mean, he could have had a “Best Of” week to keep viewers entertained and simultaneously serve as a Congdon memorial to buy himself some time.
Well most of us realize you can’t please everyone and it’s useless to even try.
Television (and radio) history has shown us replacements can and most often do survive and succeed.
RB will survive with Joanne. And for those of you worried about Joanne’s feelings… Worry not. Something tells me Joanne understands exactly what she has gotten into here. Although in my opinion the shoes she fills, weren’t all that “big”. Yes, I did like Amanda and as long as RB continues doing what their known to do best, I will enjoy Joanne just as much. Who knows, maybe more.
Which reminds me, there are two sides to every story and as every smart cop, lawyer and judge will tell you, somebodies lying. Regardless, it happens every day in this business. Especially in my biz. Then again, reality check, this ‘net vlog stuff is really small time, but that’s neither here nor there.

For marketing reasons RB un-Amandaed should ignore my advice, but I just watched the 4/26/06 silent Boom, and what I really want to see is what Joanne would do with it. And what Andrew would do with it. And Ze. And lots beyond. Amanda’s great but I don’t think she pulled that one off entirely. And yet I’m glad she tried. What’s good about RB and about Amanda isn’t just what’s funny. Nor is it just about pretty faces. There are experiments here that are revelatory of the whole situation, performer, audience , medium. Funny is a sometime side effect. Better to aim higher.
Sorry, but based on this episode, Rocketboom has lost much of it’s quirkiness and humor. Joanne tries (a bit to hard) to be funny but does not pull it off. I’ll be waiting for Amanda to emerge with a new project of her own.

It’s sad but I’m somehow not suprised there are so many rude, unthoughtful and hyper-critical comments here today. So quick to make judgment based on one show. I agree, “better to aim higher”. Joanne Colan does come across as a more mature person, keeping in mind we saw the barest introduction of her today. I don’t give a damn if she’s british or american, I like her well enough. So if the RB regulars aren’t open to something new, no one’s forcing them to watch. It may be RB will get a new audience as it goes on from here.
I’m sure Amanda was likable as a person but her goofy, mannered acting was rarely funny and personally it just wasn’t really my cup of tea, so in spite of liking the idea of and seeing potential in RB I stopped watching long ago. I wish Amanda well in whatever she chooses to do. She has helped make Internet history. May she continue to do. But now I want to say welcome to Joanne.

With Andrew holding 51% and Amanda holding 49%, one imagines what will be offered to Joanne is another phantom 49% that can be offered and denied at will. If The Producers can offer 150% of a show, why can’t Andrew?
The reason there are a lot of new visitors is because of the press RB received over May and June with Amanda showing up on mainstream media outlets like CNN. I imagine RB tripled its name recognition in a 75-day period. Which makes Drew’s self destructive tendencies all the harder to comprehend.
There is curiosity now to see exactly how mediocre RB can be. However, look for the page views and comments to wither as people realize what was unique is now banal.
You see, the problem isn’t Joanne, dear that she probably is. It’s a majority owner who sees life through a prism that allows him to believe that CBS ponied up $13 million not to get Katie Couric, but to get her executive producer. It’s a fatal view of a medium that, at its core, is entertainment based and is always selling, not the steak, but the sizzle.
The only profound part of that first RB .02 chapter was the scene of Drew writhing on the floor in the fetal position. One doubts that a year from now he’ll find the humor in that attempt at cleverness.
Keep at it guys! I have total faith that you’ll find your groove in the coming weeks.

Hi, as a viewer from Germany this “change” throws me off. I came to watch and like Rocketboom(1.0) over a similar (Spinoff?) show in Germany (ehrensenf).
But 2.0? New anchor - ok, nice. 3 minute piece about buffalo - erm waste of bandwidth in my opinion.
It looks like the loss of Amanda Congdon has taken more out of Rocketboom than just 49%…
I´ll give it a try next week, maybe this was just a bumpy start.

Many thoughts on RB2…
First of all, you goofballs who threw a pan of water on the new hostess need to stop and think for a minute. If you had been on the job (assuming you have one) for almost 2 years and suddenly were gone, do you think they’d be able to hire a temp who could do your job just as well in the first week?
No question, Amanda had her own style and fluidity on camera in her RB role. Joanne has to develop hers.
I thought her first episode was very good. Her second not so good. But we have to give her a chance. Expecting any newbie to hit the ground running–especially in an on air role like this–is really pretty silly. So even with early mixed reviews, I say “hat’s off” to Andrew and Joanne for a promising start.
On the whole split up thing, I agree with the guy who said he felt like children of a divorce. Good grief!
Rocketboom has been all about the power of the few to produce quality entertainment by leveraging the net. In the last months, we’ve seen that amazing power blossom into a great show.
Be careful what you wish for, however. In the latest days, we’ve seen the downside to “the power of the few”, being witnesses to a fight between these two brilliant people on public display via the same manifestation that helped them be great in the first place… vlogging.
Frankly, it’s been unprofessional and ugly. Shame on BOTH of you. I’m inclined to believe neither of your public points of view. The truth usually lies somewhere in the middle after all.
Of course, it also occurs to me that perhaps this whole thing was an orchestrated media dance to generate even more publicity for both sides. I doubt it. But it wouldn’t surprise me, either.
In any event, RB goes on which is how it should be. Good luck to everyone involved. But please stick to pure professionalism. It’s always in style.

The show is missing its edge and charm. One long segment that masks a program that lacks commitment and vision in its production, diversity of interest and overall is not close to being as good as the worst shows of the past.
Not everyone is mesmerized (and distracted) by a British accent…a rhetorical choice that was about as sharp as a bowling ball.
