Rocketboom

  1. Rocketboom intro proves rocketboom is human. How did Rocketboom get down to New Orleans so quickly? I’m Not really convinced by Edwards in this interview. He’s kinda like a southern robot. As of now I’m thinking Joanne ‘08. Check out my website http://www.moviemc.com and stay tuned for a re-launch coming in February

  2. Edwards background is as a trial attorney… a specialist in robbing Peter to pay Paul; and his political record clearly exposes him as a textbook socialist whose economics could be the final nail in the coffin for a country that has already suffered a term and a half of big spender Bush. My opinion of Rocketboom and Joanne has lessened considerably after seeing this “softball” interview, which lets Edwards skate by on the usual platititudes. How can the new format of internet and video blogging make any difference to the world of politics and news delivery, when the interviewers just surrender their microphone to the candidate’s stock soundbites? Don’t just roll over and smile in the glow of having landed such an unprecedented interview. A dangerous man has just announced his bid to the presidency of the United States. This isn’t just an online cocktail party. Ask the tough questions!

  7. Although I don’t agree with his agenda, I do like the fact that his message to the people was put where the people are.

I would like to see the same consideration for all the candidates who are willing to give their time to RB this should be an unbiased forum.

  8. Congratulations RocketBoom. What a great opportunity to hear an American politician talk for more than 30 seconds. And all here on your daily vlog.

    Cheers.

  9. Since reality is always here and now
Edward’s new slogan “Tomorrow begins today” means Yesterday was the day after tomorrow.
So, in essence, Today will never happen. Ever.

    And without Living in Today.
Or the Now, as espoused by Mystics
We’ll always be waiting for Tomorrow.
Thinking it’s Today, which it isn’t.
    But only the day after.
So We might as well stay in bed.
    And pray politicians will disappear
off the face of this lovely Planet
    Today. Tomorrow. And Yesterday.

    “We Can Change the World”

    Hmmm… seems I’ve heard that somewhere before…

  10. To Mr Edwards (or any of the Dems out there)
You said “We need to get out of Iraq.” Then your next statement is “We need to get involved in the genecide in Sudan and Uganda” Here is my question to you. Please explain the difference between removing a dictator that is killing his people. (This is what Sadam was convicted of) and then sticking around until the people settle down and stop killing each other (as they jockey for power) and the genecide in Sudan/Uganda? You can’t have it both ways.
Either we are the world’s policeman or we stay out of other country’s internal strife until they start attacking us.

BTW-What are the kids in the background doing? If you replace the shovels with beer they would look like most college house parties. Or are we showing the Union idea of how to get things done. Put a bunch of workers so close together that they are bumping into each other and don’t get anything done?

  12. I never make comments but this interview was so weak I have to weigh in. To have an extended interview with a serious Presidential candidate and allow him to get away with platitudinous boilerplate is a squandered opportunity. I love Joanne but there was nothing here a local news reporter couldn’t have done–and maybe even better. This is supposed to be a place for alternative points of view, so if you get another chance, I hope you’ll a)do your homeowrk so you can ask pointed, relevant questions and b) be bold. And this is meant as constructive criticism not as a slam. I’ll still happily continue to watch.

  15. Do all of you who are pounding on Drew and Joanne really think Edwards or any other candidate would actually answer tough questions? Have you watched CNN or any other print/visual media in the last decade or so. If Joanne would have asked Edwards about the Iraq situation, he would have simply smiled, told us that Bush is doing the wrong thing and that he has a better idea. That’s it.

The only candidate or at least one that will probably run who might have given a straight answer would be Barack Obama. And if he didn’t know the answer, he would say so.

But the fact that Edwards would appear on RB says a lot and kudos to Drew and the gang for going to all this work to get this interview…

  18. I thought you did a good job on your line of questioning, considering you specifically wanted to talk about the role of the public.

The time-frame allowed for the interview obviously meant you were limited, so I thought the choice of topic was appropriately motivational.

He sounds like a very down to earth guy and he obviously has a penchant for new media. Good candidate!

  21. I want Condi to win, or even Barbour if we’re going down the Katrina route :) but I shall leave aside the politics (I’m from the UK) and the fawning nature of the interview, which wasn’t too bad until the last few seconds.

I think, because this is RocketBoom, the issue of David Cameron using YouTube and being ridiculed should have been raised. Plus, don’t forget Howard Dean’s spectacular fall after all his ‘netroots’ hype. Plus, Edwards was launching his campaign on the internet from New Orleans because he can be shown to care about the people with flood damaged housing, but I suspect the people down there care more about their houses than the fact the campaign was launched on the web.

Neither do you have to be aggressive like Jeremy Paxman or John Humphrys to be a good interviewer, quite opposite! Just be more incisive, like the late Nick Clark.

  22. Joanne my dear, stop being so niave. Blogs, vlogs, internet, chip-implants , iPods connected to your congressman’’s behind….whatever. Politicians all have their own agendas or are working for corporate entities that foot their enormous bills, it’s an old boys network and once in power they end up doing what they damn well please. DUBYA is a prime example… The twit could even spell Iraq when elected…now he’s spent 350 billion dollars and counting. Enough money to pay for a university education of every kid living in the projects and ghettos across America as well as build new housing and employ theyouth of those ganger-banger and drug-infested neighborhoods. Yeah $350 billlion and counting could do that..give them hope and self-respect. The War on Terror is a sham just like The War on Drugs was. When you’re in bed with the Saudi Sheiks and have no will or plans to adopt new energy sources cause it doesn’t fit whoring greed-monster agenda.

I’m still waiting to take a peek at the “Bridge To The 21st Century” Bill Clinton promised us wth so much fervor in his heart. Yeah heart. Karma got him on that one.

If I was RB I’d stay away from the political bull-shit arena and focus on life’s more interesting tidbits…the items that made Rocketboom…well Rocketboom.

Today’s politics and politicians are getting dumb and dumber. All you hear, if you really, really listen…is the same old song and dance, just repackaged with better graphics and my god, now flash and a comments section.

Go send an email to your Congressman or ABC TV for that matter and what you’ll get is a computer generated “thank you”. I’m sure the curvaseous buxom secretary has a difficult job pressing the “delete” key at the end of the day.

Listen to the YouTube song I posted earlier… we can change the world.

Here is a typical story in today’s news that exemplifies
what I was talking about. Isn’t the FDA supposed to protect the
American public? Isn’t that their mandate? No, instead they cow-tow (pun intended ) to corporate
entities who look forward to making billions on all ends of the spectrum.
The dairy and beef producers on one end and the pharmaceutical
companies on the other end who will inevitably have to produce
new drugs to counter any abnormalities that will surely show up
down the line… Whaddya going to do about it Edwards, Hillary, Bush,
    whoever….??? Nothin”… I thought so.

So much for internet “Power To The People” an equal voice blahblah.com

Did any of you vote or have a say in cloning animals for food?
    Didn’t think so.

  24. Joanne, I appreciae that you stopeed to answer some of our comments. This telecast requires you to wear a lot of hats–comedienne, journalist, interviwer and all around tv personality–and considering your background, it’s no wonder you do so many so well. However, with all due respect, I think you’re dodging some of our constructive criticism. In an announcement for public office, a candidate provides a program, proposals or a vision. One would be hard pressed to figure out what that might be from your quesioning. Edwards was permitted to mouth a series of bland platitudes that just about anyone, dem or gop, might have offered. Honestly, it just didn’t seem like you did your homework.
And others might be right. Perhaps Rocketboom isn’t the forum for deep-digging political reposring; you may not have the resources for it. But even as a personality interview, this fell far short. I saw an internet interview with Edwards earlier this year that gave a very good sense of who he was. The interviewer asked a lot of truly dopey questions but Edwards was allowed to answer expansively and he was charming. That interviewer was Amanda and the show was Rocketboom.
I’m not comparing you to Amanda by any stretch; I think you’re both wonderful. But there’s an approach, an editorial point of view that might take what we saw out of the bland local tv news groove into the realms of something althernative and perhaps even reveletory.

  27. I am impressed with the Thursday interview with Mr. Edwards, though his answers are the typical mish-mash of ideas espoused by most all politicians when tasked for their thoughts on questions of magnitude. Can any political party today, or any large group of people become associated with and then accomplish the following world goals? Supposing there were a forum, or media outlet where ideas about God, whether the existence of God or modern peoples relation to IT are presented rationally, using twenty-first century interpretations of the world? Whatever media tools and forms of presentation are employed, imagine the objective is seen fruitful a short five years from today, where perhaps Muslims with their beliefs stop acting like robots in their relation to their interpretation of god from that book of theirs. Fruitfully observed it is in the future where a direct correlation between the efforts of Rocketboom et al.,— I mean the efforts of anyone who presents this “God forum” to the masses, and the Iranians voting, or somehow “dissecting” those religious knuckleheads they presently have from power. Imagine the history books fifty years from now written and portraying the Rocketboom crowd were the single most influential …? the single most influential reason why archaic religious thoughts and practices were extricated from the minds of the masses of people, and the day to day lives of people improved as a result. People will say such a goal is impossible, much less inconceivable to think about implementing in any practical manner. The Mayan religion and practices of today can not just be made to go away with people “talking” to each other, or any other way the naysayers will say. Baloney is my response back, though I don’t have the time to present these thoughts more coherently at the moment.Establishing and maintaining the proper civil and cultural climate ie. Western, and then only a few hundred, or a thousand or two individuals within the last two or three centuries wrought the prosperity and quality of life people in the West enjoy today. Newton, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Mr. Nobel, …? ok, bring in the politician Abraham Lincoln for consideration now, and many, many others of this ilk did things that made the West the Best for people living today. Politics and politicians, as far as I’m concerned are trivial once a proper climate and civil atmosphere which fosters the creative abilities of the individual over the group is established. And since this climate I speak of has already been established here in the West, only the self-destructive and self-defeating tendencies of the individual now hinder each and everyone one of US to be the best we can be, and perhaps to roll up their sleeves and consider doing what most consider to be the impossible. I mean, we can change the world for the better by ridding it of these dinosauric, and dangerous religous thoughts in the minds of people today. Today we have the tools of thought, and the media outlets like Rocketboom (or another grandeur entity) to speak to the masses. And now, afer fifteen, twenty minutes of impromptu thoughts and writing, I have to go and do something else.

  28. Good to see Joanne finally getting a chance to do something she’s good at. As for the lack of hard-hitting questions… that in my mind is not what Rocketboom is for. If I wanted politicians sweating in an interview, I’d watch Newsnight (who have their own video podcast - http://bbc.co.uk/newsnight ) or watch Jon Snow tear them a new one on Channel 4 News. RB is there to raise attention to the subject and that’s what it did, although there is a feeling that RB was used by Edwards to appeal to the net surfing, iPodding demographic.

As for referring to David Cameron and his use of webcameron… let’s not forget that if Joanne was working on an independant Rocketboom-style vlog in the UK (if such a vlog exists) then the British national press would simply refer to her as a “geek’s sweetheart” in passing and probably forget to include the link.

  30. Did Rocketboom really land the John Edwards interview, or did John Edwards approach Rocketboom and use them as a tool to get his message out?

    The message was clear:

“we are announcing our message on the internet in the hope of attracting the young disenfranchised voter”.

To this end, they did a good job. I realize Rocketboom slants to the left, however, how can they feel good about themselves after being used so blatantly by John Edwards et. al.
