  1. Wow, not only are you up early today, but you read the same budget article I did!

We Americans are so completely screwed. Fellow Americans, let’s all emigrate to a better country!

  2. Max, If I hadn’t just spent the last nine minutes watching a way rocking guide to becoming a master of the air drums I would be really be angry with you.

First of all, one welcome result of Amanda’s departure is the absence of obscene language. I personally felt refreshed that that aspect of RB went away. I would be even happier if that kind of language stayed out of the comments section as well.

As for the budget, it has been a mess through many administrations, both Democratic and Republican. To pin the government’s budget woes on one party is idiotic and naive. The simple fact is that members of congress love to carry around their pork barrels and load them up with our hard earned dollars.

And no president in the last 50 years or more has been willing to veto a budget bill to put a stop to the whole cycle. The line item veto has been a joke, supposedly passed, but never utilized.

That being said, governments, local, state, and federal have no capital budgets by nature. So the way that projects are done is by the sale of bonds, in other words debt. Debt by itself is not a bad thing necessarily. Capital projects have long term value, thus long term financing is a reasonable approach. The biggest problem with federal debt is the rate of growth in it, not that it exists in the first place.

The analysis referenced in the link is good for what it is, but is rather lopsided. To say that the federal government is insolvent is not really accurate. The growth of debt is a concern which needs to be addressed. Doing so will require realistic expectations of what the government can provide from our taxes.

I encourage everyone to read the full report in addition to the commentary. It is very straightforward and appears to give a lot of good perspective on the situation.

  3. Nice earrings today, Joanne. Am I right, folks?

You know, for some reason (non sequitur) today I just want to be cruel to sheep:

  5. Bonjour,

    A+ today.

It is said that cynicism is a proof of good mental health.

The sequence of the first three comments, is particularly judicious…and alarming.

While widening the vision on the other countries known as “rich and civilized”, it is more or less the same thing.

In France, the debt (all cumulated) represents almost the GDP.

Income tax and the corporation taxes do not make it possible any more, not to cover the refunding of the debt, but the interests on the debt…

    Same system, same report.

    Keep it up,

    S.

  7. Awesome show today, guys! The pacing was perfect; the editing tight.

And I can’t get enough of those Science Songs.

How ’bout another “trading up” episode? ‘Tis the holiday season; and now, just five days away from Christmas, you’d probably get some great footage of harried people telling you to piss off as they’re dashing around trying to finish their last minute shopping. May not yield great trades, but the expressions and bad-itudes would be hilarious. And Joanne should be sure to cheerily say “Merry Christmas” to all the Scrooges encountered.

    Cheeky, indeed.

    I love Rocketboom!! It’s a blast.

  9. Leron: Just want to rehash - my comment regarding realistic expectations for federal spending. This certainly does not extend to closing firehouses and hospitals, or to starving children. The modern state of our government does none of these things. I was referring to pork barrel projects that serve mostly as a means of buying votes for members of congress, i.e. bridges to nowhere.

Again I encourage people to read the documents from our government’s financial arm. The press never does.

As for China, I think that the biggest concern is that we are sending money to a government that could have frightening ambitions militarily in the future. I am not particularly concerned about the Chinese people and their personal economic growth. In the future we could all be serving a tremendous consumer economy in that country. Just remember that the Japanese make Hondas - but they love to buy Harleys from us!

Now, back to my air-drumming practice!

  13. Can you please dispense with all the smarmy “America sucks” items…or at least try not to so enjoy bashing the country that gives you the freedom to be so clueless? This episode just reminded me why I haven’t bothered to tune in for the last couple of weeks.

  14. Dave — I agree that the “America sucks” items are generally smarmy, but what disappoints me even more is that they are so shallow.

RB actually seems gleeful that the US effort in Iraq has become an enormously tragic fiasco. If the U.S. invasion was the wrong thing to do, what does RB believe should have been done about Saddam Hussein? What does RB believe the U.S. should do in Iraq right now? If you think there are other countries with a better plan for the region, why aren’t you reporting on them?

  15. Nice try, but no cigar. I’m not falling for another four paragraph, three hours of editing a rant about US, good or bad or whatever to the good folks at Rocketboom. I’d give y’all a piece of my mind tonight, for sure, but I gotta finish the manuscript.I will say this though: Someday, Mergatroid will live …!P.S. gmrbill, smashing? Listen to the use of the word dandy instead of smashing inside that sentence of yours. Dandy is a more precise, and correct word for the context of the situation than smashing is, I think. Though it may be simply a peculiar idiosyncratic of mine whenever I have this particular …—I really gotta go.

  18. Fred — I come to Rocketboom for entertainment, but they don’t always consult me about the content they should air.

Sometimes they choose to comment on very serious topics. I don’t see any reason why their treatment of these should be glib, and still less do I see it as a virtue.

When they seem to gloat over the miserable situation in Iraq, which has had such a colossal butcher’s bill and which promises to become even worse, I find it in very poor taste. You are entitled to your own feelings on this, of course.

Contrary to your claim, there is considerable variety in the tone of Rocketboom’s episodes, depending on the content and their attitude toward the topic. I believe if you spend a few minutes in the archives this will become apparent.

  19. I’m living in Hanoi right now, so the only news I get is propaganda articles such as “Law Breakers Will be Punished- Prime Minister Dung.” Needless to say, Rocketboom keeps me sane. I’ve been inspired to start making some online videos here, which you can check out at wwww.hugeinasia.com. Thanks for the show!
