  2. I’m confused. Is France24 streamed on the Internet or not? If it is, why isn’t there a link to the stream on http://www.france24.com/ ?

  5. Thanks, RB, for the interesting post today. International perspectives are always helpful in formulating an opinion. But, I’m wondering if France24 will report on the seemingly non-extistent people of color on which other commenters have remarked.

Here’s a good place to start:
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061127/lf_nm/france_police_dc
    FRENCH POLICE CANNOT PROTECT THEMSELVES.

Ah, nevermind. It apparently is just a bunch of ‘youths’ causing a bit of trouble. No need to look any further.

  6. The French have had difficult relationships with everyone, not just Arabs. Why? BECAUSE THEY’RE DICKHEADS.
And please tell that French news expert that opinions have nothing to do with the news. The News has to be straight, unbiased, fact. Leave the opinions to the “talking heads”.

  7. SteveL: Regarding Arabs being dickheads, I’ve heard that Arab Muslims treat non-Arab Muslims badly, too, almost as a rule. It’s always bad to start a religion based on warfare as Mohammed did, rather than on peace or Nature.

    Here’s a question:
How is Islam like a cult?

  9. Another voice (make that 3) in the media choir… Cest la Vie.
More importantly what did Joanne’s shoes look like? This will keep me going for at least 30 seconds. Is this how the French pick up women? Asking about their shoes. Worlds greatest lovers my foot (I know it’s lousy but I couldn’t help myself.) Was he compiling some kind of database on the couture of hot british girls. Inquiring minds want to know.

  10. Wait - these “progressive” Europeans have to provide separate facilities by national origin? And it is government sanctioned? This would not even be legal in the USA.

Those in America who think that somehow the Europeans have found a better way to govern need to look hard at how things really (dys)function there.

It’s like the old adage “If you think you have problems just ask someone else about theirs”.

As for the people of France, and Parisians in particular, when I visited I found them charming and extremely helpful. I believe the bad rap is largely unfounded.

Too bad the first 24×7 internet video news has to come from a goverment source. It would be nice to see some private concerns take this on. I am sure that it will happen in the future…

  11. Hey, who was that guy at the end of the report trying to pick up Joanne? Although, he did have a few good lines to use (show me the tag on your jeans was a good one !)

    Chère Joanne,

J’espère que vous avez apprécié Paris.

Aussi, si un jour, vous auriez besoin d’un chauffeur pour vous faire visiter la Suisse, vous pouvez compter sur moi. Je suis très sérieux!

    A bientôt j’espère,

france24 is certainly NOT the french governement news channel.

France 24 belongs equally to TF1 (private commpany) and France Television (somehow public private, since a part of its budget is subsidies).

Governement doesn’t have share, doesn’t contôle anything (At least, it’s as independant as bbc, cnn, al jazirah, euronews, deutshewelle …).

  19. I like how you edited out what must have been the French hustler’s response to Joanne’s “I feel i’m at the Doctor right now.” And the budding Humbert Humbert/shoe fetishist, probably said: “you are, I’m a gynecologist. how shall we proceed.”

  22. Fine coverage. I am surprised at the anti-French comments. The anti-Arab comments are, of course, quite racist and, a bit sad. We are a global community and need to see out to where we are in the world. This was a good way to begin again to look out there to our brothers and sisters.

  23. d henry would you say the news stories posted about the goings on in the muslim world is rascist or just newsworthy fact?

you can always turn a blind eye, history is replete with blind men and women, and as the old adage goes…History does repeat itself.

Too bad some love to hate, instead of love to love.

  25. Totor:

Thanks for the elaboration on funding for France24. TF1 is in face a private enterprise, but France Television is certainly public.

I didn’t say that France24 is the government news station.

My point is that the potential for a 24/7 news stream is tremendous and could be very profitable, and it is disappointing to me that we are not seeing it happen yet.

Government stations have their limitations and are by nature beholden to their funding source. Not to say that NPR, BBC, etc don’t attempt to be balanced. I feel that the best way to get variety in viewpoints is to have many private and public sources, each with it’s own “agenda”. Reality is that nobody is truly neutral and unbiased, and that is a good thing in my book.

If anyone thought I was being critical of the French or their government I apologize. I was just making the point that people walk around with beliefs that come only out of rhetoric, and are not founded in fact. Sometimes truths come out in unpleasant ways, such as the split studios at France24. There are pleanty of unpleasantries in governments all over the world. We all need to learn from history, and take the good and bad in forming opinions.
