  3. Hey, I was wondering if you could make a small excursus to Genf and report about the black hole experiment some people are concerned about =)

    Well, for my taste, today’s show was too centered on one particular topic. But probably I just think that way because it’s not very interesting for me. I do like the Rocketboom in general though. You get to know something about our culture and pieces of information about new technology or even politics. And it onlyy costs five minutes a day (;

By the way, I am from Germany, 18 years old and go to school ^^

  4. 1) you should have no problem identifying your demographic. Just ask!

Of course, folks may want to know what you may want to do with the info…

    2) Excellent interview on many levels. Production quality, comfort level of JC and Rubel, intelligent, succinct, and interesting questions and answers. It might me interesting to check back with Rubel from time to time..

    3) was funny when JC talked about “the early days” . Just goes to show that the concept of “internet time” is not dead…

  5. Stuff like the Democracy player (below the Rocketboom video box) or MythTV make it easier. I think you can use a channel changer with these. Maybe that would have to be pre-installed somehow on a Linux machine for people who don’t want to use a mouse or files at all. That way we aren’t locked into a Tivo. MythTV and Democracy Player are free and open source software with no paid service. You just choose the service off the web although they come preloaded with free services.

Ads seem fine as I think they are worth more then money. I think YouTube does it this way now. Local money wont be worth as much as we go more global and into space I don’t think as were competing with other treasuries.

Who are the people watching Rocketboom :P Me, I from Chicago, into guitar/media/programming/science/etc.
Everyone uses the computer. What’s so cool is that you have choice. Most devices run operating systems and if they’re free then usually they aren’t tied to a paid service. i think it’s a cost issue.

  6. I thought todays episode was was really well done. Great questions…down to earth answers. I think this is a very impoetant subject and Steve (not me, the smart one that was a guest today)takes it on in a very practical way. Joanne was dead on.

  7. BACKGROUND SOLUTION:
Why don’t you put up a new photo from submitted pictures by your viewers from around the world (preferrably black/white so as not to conflict with Joanne’s daily attire).
You could have a link for background submissions…
and have a credit line at the bottom of your story links with the persons name and location. (Parameters could include: no single person or object that would be obscured by Joanne… ie: mostly landscapes, textures, room setups, gardens, etc… submissions could be humorous or just beautiful.)
This way, you’d have something interesting to check out everyday.

  12. I just made some really spiteful and mean t-shirts from Spreadshirt.com - I have to go to confession for that as well as send them back – I am religious - Orthodox - in church three times a week – I also got a windows media remote from pacific geek - I shop at Amazon for all my Classic Gaming needs as well as Goozex.com which I am still wary of.. Also from Amazon got a my Soymilk maker and religious books - Thomas Hopko’s book on Same Sex Attraction. Also my Wife is also very into Organic stuff and we Home School our kids. I need to have cds resurfaced occasionally. I shop a Wal-Mart because it is close and Lowes for plumbing and wiring in my elderly downtown Mill house. I never have any problems with my Netflix que becuase I never pick new movies - I normally never buy anything in that last shot - nothing - nothe pasta not even the yougurt - make our own Except for the Cisco IP phone I use those every day I was piqued byt product placement of the condoms next to the soccer ball promoting an anti-histimine - and the Toys-R-Us giraffe behind it - is that some sort of creepy subliminal message - maybe something for the Soccer Moms…. now that is scary

  13. This interview is why I love RB.

    RB’s interviewing style, casual. Perfect.

NPR did an excellent segment on ESPN and “The Art of the Interview.” (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5625218)
It will help clarify why RB is better at interviews than “60 Minutes”.

  15. you probably want our demographics for your ad campaigns, you and drew doesn’t sound as interested in communicating with there people, if i were you i would talk by here answer questions people make, drew generally appears by here to scold us, amanda did that also and you joanne seem as you need to be prepared with things under control, shy or something but it feels strange that people in rb don’t appear in a kind nice way by the comments, is like you don’t like to….why?

  16. Very interesting. Only time will tell if this works for business without destroying the media they are try to leverage.

If you want to give the brand owners in that last shot their moneys worth (not that I think they paid Rocketboom) you need to start a contest to see who can spot the most brand logos.

Good stuff today. I do tend to appreciate the show more when it spreads its focus across a few topics - but today’s content was well worth the devotion of an entire show.

I’ve been reading Mr. Rubel’s work since my days at Ipswitch (makers of WS_FTP), and his opinions are always insightful.

The whole movement toward user-influenced content from the smallest blog to the most widely recognized products is one that certainly we, as the geeks Steve mentioned, need to pay close attention to.

We don’t want our grandmas finding crap on google, just because we surfed there. It’s all about conscientious surfing - w/the occasional paparazzi blog for dessert.

I seem to use the word ‘pretty’ alot when I talk about you, hmmmm… I need to come up with a new word. A word that combines what you are, pretty, lovely, beautiful, sweet, funny. Thats alot maybe two words would be better, wait I’ve got them, Joanne Colan… perfect.

  24. Great interview. Very informative. The product placement and selling out topics carried in your interview and extra clips bring to mind the 28th Aug. 2006 cover story in the “New Statesman.” Their point is that citizen media may be dying, and that a corporate takeover of the blogosphere may be under way.

  32. RB does interesting stories and interviews, but at times you don’t cover all 5 W’s. This was more evident in the days of RB 1.0, I think. But still.

Also — possibly because you tend to interview people you admire — there seems to be a reluctance to put them on the spot.

Mr. Rubel seems like a nice man, his comments were articulately presented, and it was a pleasant conversation, but it was also terribly banal. Today’s show was the sort of talk that’s fine when I’m sitting at the kitchen table gabbing with friends.

I wouldn’t care to see RB move toward the shouting matches that pass for interviews on TV, but I do think there is opportunity to dig deeper.

I don’t know that your more-visible presence on the comments board would be a good thing. It seems to me that getting into discussions here could easily eat up a lot of your time that might be better spent in other ways.

IMHO, your part of the dialog is the RB program — its content, style and everything else. RB is your baby. We’re just the kibbitzing in-laws, looking over your shoulder and telling you how you ought to be raising the kid.

Were you listening to us when you thought up RB and made it real? Did we put the long days and heartache into making it a success? Have most of us even met an MTV VJ? If we’re so smart, how come we’re not the ones with a famous vblog?

  37. The Holy Grail! Direct Marketing has finally found a way to put a chip inside your brain (literally) via internet blogs and vlogs. And nobody even saw it coming… Used to be a direct mail package would arrive in your mailbox. 98% of the time they were thrown in the garbage bin. Companies tried their utmost to mail to the proper demographics. They test marketed different envelopes, inserts, enticements (gifts, discounts, trips, etc) They bought lists and lists from “list suppliers”.

All so they could achieve an optimal response. A 3-4% response was considered phenomenal. Now they have a steady “herd” of bloggers and vloggers who “inhabit” a site as part of their lifestyle. These people think they are part of a community, a culture—affecting change. (Every once and a while they do…like the fauxtography scandal a few weeks back)) However, now marketers with the help of people like Rebel can sell you their Smarties, Coke, and Chip Ahoy cookies with even greater precision. Rebel is experimenting with Code words like social networking and social media. Ooooh sounds cool, doesn’t it? Isn’t the virtual world fun. Sadly, a recent study found even with all this “new internet media” and new gadgetry people are lonelier than ever before and have fewer REAL close friends than anytime since “old media” started. Sure you have lots of internet buddies. But can you go out and have a beer with one of them? Don’t think so…

He said, “Consumers are using technology to empower themselves. Really? Mr. Rebel name 5 “real” empowering examples. He added, “The public is deciding what products are created.” Really? So now that I can write “Screw You!” on a purple M&M that empowers me to think I’ve created a new product? Gimme a break. Sorry, you Mr & Ms. Blogger/Vlogger don’t decide on new product. This is a fantasy! A ploy. A few new Buzzwords to get you to participate in their newest and latest “Direct Marketing Campaign”. And you don’t even know it. Because the chip has been implanted in your brain making you perceive that you have created or influenced change, while the only thing you’ve done is create $$$$change ($millions) by buying the advertised product. So old media advertising is “out” and new media advertising is “in”. And boy the corporate entities are happy as pigs in shit. The Holy Grail has finally been found. And it’s only the beginning. Remember when the net had NO ADVERTISING whatsoever? Didn’t think so. Demographics.

Edelman PR with offices in the heart of Times Square. That alone should give you an idea of the hundreds of millions these guys rake in. Rent alone in that location is well… you do the math.

Think about it next time you have your Starbucks coffee!

“This is the most exciting time in history!!!” Yeah for marketers like Steve Rebel and PR companies like Edelman…

  38. something that dawned on me today as i was laughing at the excellent last section of the show, with all the product ads everywhere…this is exactly the type of thing that i remember hoping to see more of during the 1.0 days. for some reason, it wasn’t there — not sure if it was that amanda’s presence was much more pronounced and that she was usually the “star” despite who was being interviewed (not a reflection on her, just her more conspicuous presence compared to joanne), or if it was because there was always this high-strung tone to the interview…almost as if there existed a subtext that rocketboom needed to prove to the interviewee that the interview was not a waste of his/her time…but aside from my personal speculations and biased observations, there still didne’t seem to be as much of “have the interviewer do insanely funny, out-of-character stuff without losing relevance to the topic at hand”.

hence, there was usually a stark contrast between “serious” and “funny”. for whatever reason, today’s episode gave off no feelings to me of “rocketboom is trying to prove itself worthy of this interview” and the level of involvement of the interviewee in the show was phenomenal — it almost made it feel like the interviewee is part-time rocketboom staff, which helps me to remember them and not just think of the interview as a stiff exchange of information/opinion. which is exactly one of the advantages that this medium has over tv, in my opinion. joanne’s dialogue and contribution appeared relaxed and natural, and humbly curious while “knowing its place” — not at all fishing for ways to demonstrate refined or cleverly thought out opinion, which i felt sometimes during the 1.0 days — perfectly executed directing also — taking that bite out of the whopper was just icing on the cake.

the only complaint i would have is that, like someone said above, it would have been cool to hear a few other random snippets of news, then have a slightly shortened interview and the awesomely deadpan/sarcastic ending. but i’m psychotically demanding, so don’t pay any attention to anything i say. ever.

  45. What bothers me about this Rubel’s big vision of things is that it leaves big, oppressive corporations in control. They want to make Joe Blow think he has a say, while they maintain their strangehold. Meanwhile those corporations, which are all in bed with one another be they media or advertising, are bribing out politicians legally, not telling us that our elections are rigged, and supporting the 9/11 coverup. I such as fuck don’t trust them or like them, and I don’t know anyone who does. These corporations reduce us to “consumers” in hope we won’t ask why they’re screwing us in 100 ways including dismantling our democracy.

what’s with all the anger? yes, one use for new media is as a new marketing channel. so what? nobody is being compelled to buy these products. influenced, sure. but aren’t your rants an attempt to influence people, too?

i don’t drink starbucks coffee…because i think it tastes bad! but i don’t begrudge those that do…whether it’s because they like the coffee, the chairs or the marketing.

consumers (it’s ok, it’s not a dirty word) have to take responsibility for their own choices. by all means, vote with your wallet and of course share your opinion. but companies have the right to do so, too.

are there evil companies? of course. but trying to market more effectively and sell more product doesn’t automatically make you enron or wal-mart.

I’d love to quote Steve Rubel for a white paper I’m doing on Podcasting and Corporate Training. What does he say near the end of the interview when he says something like, “The American Animal,” or “the American Annal is it’s own institution in it’s own place?” I’d love to get that correct for my transcription.
