  1. Pretty funny for a casual Friday, but I don’t think Joanne’s accent is a problem at all. If it caused a problem understanding the stories, that would be different, but I think she’s a clear, easy to understand speaker.

  3. Brits do a terrible job faking American accents. The worst case that comes to mind was Cate Blanchett as Hepburn in ‘Aviator’. Man did she really, really ‘bite ass’ as we Amerricuns are fond of saying !

I think the accent is ‘ok’ a little northern polish and you’ll be as good as new.

  10. Joanne, go ahead and train yourself to speak however you want, but my guess is most RB viewers don’t have a problem with your accent and in fact love it. I know I do.

Agro: you’re such a pretentious ass. You’re so obviously wrong about Cate Blanchett’s Hepburn accent there’s no need for me to even provide a counter-argument. Are you entitled to your opinion? Certainly. But your opinion is completely wrong.

Your English accent is absolutely FINE, Joanne!

And what would you gain by sounding American, anyway?

I, personally, can’t see such a change doing anything for you except making you stick out less (in America).

I am from the coast of South Carolina and no one here speaks with a southern accent. I envisioned this town to be very southern, with grits, biscuits, gravies and y’all…This town is quite the opposite, a melting pot like Southern California where I grew up.

So Would You Please Do One Rocketboom Show With Your Southern Drawl? It would make me quite happy and the same for all the “Southern” folks here. :]

  39. Let me attempt to clear this accent business up:

Some people don’t like Joanne’s accent bc it reminds them she’s not Amanda.

Some people don’t like the accent bc it reminds them she’s not American.

Some people *Do* like the accent bc they think it makes Joanne more attractive.

Some people didn’t like the accent because it seemed to accentuate a certain style, one of structure, formality, and professionalism, where what’s typically expected in a good vlog is a more friendly, personal, and intimate feel. This is why her accent annoyed me. But closer analysis reveals its not Joanne’s accent, but her behavior and “on-screen” personality, that ultimately make the difference regarding this point. To which I have to say she is doing rather well, but still has a ways to go.

As for the rest, she’s not American or Amanda…and, you know what - that’s ok. Most of us just want to feel we are seeing the “real” Joanne.

And “OMG JC IS SO HOT I LUV CLASSY BRITS!” comments belong in the trash, frankly.

Thanks and have a great wkend!

  41. I love the fact that that the voice coach thinks Joanne has a standard English accent - she’s obviously never been here other than via the TV. I think what she wanted to say is “Joanne, you have an Oxford accent.” A.K.A. BBC English.
Try a night out in somewhere like Newcastle on the north east coast of the UK and you’ll see what I mean.

Although badly recorded in alot of instances here’s a page dedicated to different regional accents in the UK. All of them
can be clearly understood - which means they didn’t really get near the core of the accents - but it gives a flavour.

  44. Reminds me of the TikibarTV Rocketboom episode - “worcestershire” should be pronounced “wooster”.

Joanne, RB 1.0 was all about injecting the host’s personality into the broadcast, which is also what vlogging is about.

RB 2.0 will achieve success when your watchers see enough of your personality to feel like they are connecting to you on a personal level.

This show was fun and interesting, but I hope that it was just done for fun and that you have no intention of Americanizing your voice. If we want to see people acting as though they are someone they are not we can watch the mainstream media.

Thanks for the fun today. Once again Joanne - you are at your best in the field!

Speaking from the westcoast of Canada (with a Canadian accent), I think that the various accents that are heard around here everyday are delightful. They are a part of what makes each person unique.

But Joanne has been in the States for 2 years, for God’s sake! She should have conformed by now. We should all encourage the Americanization of Joanne Colan.

  73. Obviously, this whole thread could be devoted to agro’s imbecilic comments.

Cate Blanchett didn’t do an American accent in “The Aviator”, she did a Kate Hepburn accent. And if he had ever actually seen a Kate Hepburn movie, he would know she didn’t have an American accent so much as a weird hybrid-New Englander footlights accent.

Cate nailed it, which is why she won the Oscar for her performance.

I’m with everyone here…Joanne, NEVER go American.

Nothing is sadder than watching lovely lasses such as Emilie Raven, Naomi Watts, Melissa George, Jacqueline McKenzie, Anna Paquin, Rachel Griffiths and others forsake their homeland accents to be accepted by American audiences.

Here’s someone from Connecticut trying to pass off a Southwest accent as authentic. Look how lame he sounds:

  79. 107th! or 108th, not sure…

i was highly entertained today — joanne’s chill presence and balanced conversational skills are increasingly enjoyable to me as she exposes more of her personality. also thought the content was fun and appropriate. i believe most comments above reflecting fear about joanne changing are understandable, but i viewed this as more of a symbolic gesture (beyond just the fun aspect). no matter how joanne modifies her presentation, i now trust completely that she and andrew will work to make it as enjoyable for us viewers as possible.

based on who joanne is, it’s hard to imagine even drastic changes in her accent not ending up being extremely likable or making me not want to come back for more. similar to how one of amanda’s many strengths was her silliness and therefore she could do anything ridiculous and we’d love it (even if just loving to make fun of it), one of joanne’s many strengths is her adaptability, and no matter how she evolves, i have confidence we’ll love it.

I’ve quite enjoyed some of the more political stories that you’ve covered. Oh also this is the first time I’ve written. Because I subscibe through itunes and I’m in the UK I generally tend to listen to yesterdays episode each day. You trying to learn a british accent reminds me of an episode of East Enders where they introduced an “american” obviously they couldn’t afford to actually find an american actor so within a couple weeks she had a british accent again. I’m Canadian and I’ve been over here for about 6 years now and people seem to love a foreign accent so don’t bother trying to change it. Well that’s my two cents, I was actually inspired to write because of wednesdays story but oh well.

  98. Joanne! Don’t change your accent. It’s delightful. But this was really interesting to watch. What a treat. I just discovered Rocketboom and I think it’s fantastic! I look forward to watching more, preferably with British accent! ;) Can you teach us how to speak in a British dialect with what you learned in your class? hee hee!

  99. NO! DON’T DO IT! You may be tired of hearing people remark on your accent, but PLEASE don’t let that push you to trying to sound like “one of us.” We need to hear all sorts of accents to be reminded that not everyone sounds, or thinks, as we do!!! And anyway, surely much of RB’s audience is international.

I guess the verdict is in. Eliza Doolittle can ditch the Henry Higgins approach.

  101. It’s vexing to think that Joanne will become an American, when I just got used to her being British. As for her “losing” her accent, I would hate for her to travel back across the pond with only an American accent, while we hold her sultry corset-laced upper-class dipthongs hostage here in the U.S.A. May we give her a Canadian accent as a consolation prize, I know it isn’t much, but they do both have the same Queen, eh?

  102. Yes, Black Eagle, earlier when I insulted Agro for being incorrect about Cate Blanchett’s Hepburn accent, well, that wasn’t nice. I agree.

I insulted Agro because I myself am a pretensious ass and I know one when I see one (or read their comments).

Although it isn’t politically correct I still stand by my attack on Agro.

You, Black Eagle, are a kind and gracious soul. I am not.

Agro is still a pretentious ass… and yes, so am I. But the fact remains Blanchett’s Hepburn accent was IMPECCABLE!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go out into the night and try to get a life.

  103. Joanne,

I’ll watch you every day regardless, but I prefer your English accent. I am from the west coast and have always subconsiously added 20 or so IQ points to anyone I hear with an English accent and subtracted the same amount from those with southern US accents. Can’t help it, I guess.

  104. STOP!!!!! Don’t touch that accent!

Why would you want to sound like everyone else? Your accent is fantastic just the way it is!

  105. What’s all this then? I thought she said there had been comments made about her accent not that she was going to get “Americanized”! Just in case, keep the British accent! I’ts not like you’re an Eastender or from Somerset…

  106. In recent news it stated the “guitar solo” is dead. (basically cause nobody knows how to play real guitar anymore—-my comment) so Joanne next Friday could you pick up your ax and play a solo a la Frank Zappa from Shut Up ‘n Play Yer Guitar which is simply a collection of guitar solos.

Or find a musician teacher like you did today to teach you.

Looking forward to hear you kick some “rock” ass!

I’m all for the accent modification, but rather than American, could you go for Italian instead?

  109. Lets see, that’s 148 dudes in love with you and your accent, No Wait, I make 149.
    That’s what makes you unique.
An accent automatically makes a woman 10 times hotter.
The only thing you need to change is to Marry Me.
