Pretty funny for a casual Friday, but I don’t think Joanne’s accent is a problem at all. If it caused a problem understanding the stories, that would be different, but I think she’s a clear, easy to understand speaker.
Ha! Cute. But I hope you’re not serious. Your English accent makes everything you say sound witty.
Brits do a terrible job faking American accents. The worst case that comes to mind was Cate Blanchett as Hepburn in ‘Aviator’. Man did she really, really ‘bite ass’ as we Amerricuns are fond of saying !
I think the accent is ‘ok’ a little northern polish and you’ll be as good as new.
NO! Please don’t loose the accent! That’s part of what makes you sexy! Plus, it helps you stand out as an individual. It would be a shame if everyone sounded the same in the world…
Oh NO! Please do not give up your accent! It is interesting, funny and well… perfect!
Joanne,
Why don’t you try an Indian dialect next Friday? Should be fun!
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_English
Noooo! I love your accent! Please keep it - don’t try to become something you’re not.
Wow Joanne, even your Southeastern accent sounds classy. You need to learn redneck! Repeat after me: Aisk mah aint to daince on da graiss! Hmm, I see you’re still keeping an eye on the grass. Good! Bears watching that grahss!
Change !?! Are you crazy ?!?
Joanne, go ahead and train yourself to speak however you want, but my guess is most RB viewers don’t have a problem with your accent and in fact love it. I know I do.
Agro: you’re such a pretentious ass. You’re so obviously wrong about Cate Blanchett’s Hepburn accent there’s no need for me to even provide a counter-argument. Are you entitled to your opinion? Certainly. But your opinion is completely wrong.
No, please say that was just to entertain the RB audience!
Your English accent is absolutely FINE, Joanne!
And what would you gain by sounding American, anyway?
I, personally, can’t see such a change doing anything for you except making you stick out less (in America).
.
Wikipedia: “When a standard language and pronunciation are defined by a group, an accent may be any pronunciation that deviates from that standard.” Considering English “English” as standard, you don´t have an accent!
Like your show.
Regards,
Ruben
Joanne… you do not need to change anything! You sound wonderful and lovely just the way you are!!!
What a shame. I guess I will have to quit coming to watch you on Rocket Boom if you try to americanize your accent. One of the things I like about this site is your British accent.
By all means, keep that wonderful british sound, americans can’t even pronounce “internet” in a way that is vaguely understandable..;)
Keep the good work going,
kombi
P.S. Ehrensenf is actually a complete rip off..
LOL - it should be interesting to hear the result of joanne’s “american” accent… boom on there!
Until you’ve lived in England for a while, you’re not completely aware of your own American accent. For the life of me I could not pronounce “butter” as they do.
Mine came out “budder” compared to their “but-tah”
Noooooo! Don’t you dare! If you’re going to work on an accent, how about Glaswegin? :)
-joe c.
agro: We’ll not even start on Americans trying English accents…
NO!! !
the accent is quite brilliant, innit .. .
anyone who doesn’t think so is a nob .. .
So I’m sitting at my desk, watching casual Friday while enjoying my coffee and toast and I can’t help but think “this is a joke, right?
Joanne’s not seriously considering changing that incredibly nice accent of hers?
No one at Rocketboom is pressuring her to do this, right? If so, their mamelukes!
Next thing you know she’ll get plastic surgery (the last thing she needs!) dye her hair purple and join a cult!”
Oy vay!
Please don’t lose the accent! It is what differentiates you from the rest of the video blogosphere! That and your perfect smile!
Joanne,
I am from the coast of South Carolina and no one here speaks with a southern accent. I envisioned this town to be very southern, with grits, biscuits, gravies and y’all…This town is quite the opposite, a melting pot like Southern California where I grew up.
So Would You Please Do One Rocketboom Show With Your Southern Drawl? It would make me quite happy and the same for all the “Southern” folks here. :]
You should switch every other day between a southern and british accent. Your accent is very sexy. Don’t give in to peer pressure!
Please DO NOT adapt an American accent! Yours ist _absolutely brilliant and MOST enyojable!
Best wishes -
Hal
I’ll pile on as well:
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Please don’t change……..
Having spent much of my life on the stage I loved this…made me miss the musty rehearsal halls that used to devour so much of my time.
Great Casual Friday piece…Bravo!
Joanne, please don’t drop the British accent. It’s really very pleasant.
The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plane.
If you want to learn Aramaic
(I hear it’s making a come back) I can teach you one on one.
(Which plane- British Airways, of course)
It would be funny to try and do a whole Rocketboom episode with an American accent. But everytime you mess up, there should be a “BUZZ” sound or a whack-a-mole hammer come down on your head.
I love the accent. Rocketboom would not be the same now without it. It would be like having another new host and that just would not be right
Agro, Cate Blanchett is AUSTRALIAN. Very. Get it right.
Joanne, why on earth would you want to gain a Seppo accent? Are you out of your mind? (Seppo - Australian slang for “Septic tank/yank”)
It looks to me as a stealthy way to introduce Loretta’s illegitmate long lost twin sister. Y’all know that southern accent will come in handy out there in front of that moblie home motif in front of the outddoor ironing board. Bring on Lee Anne. I can’t wait. Yee Haaaaa! And like many above, when not Lee Anne, stay Joanne!
Beautiful!
Please don’t change a thing Joanne.
Hey Tuesday, you’re the travel guru around here. I have to fly to N.Y. next week. What’s the latest scoop?
you lose the accent, I unsubscribe to the podcast.
Clear & direct.
:)
kiss
Please don’t change a thing Joanne.
Hey Tuesday, you’re the travel guru around here. I have to fly to N.Y. next week. What’s the latest airport scoop (other than don’t wear sneakers with a fuse in them)?
Let me attempt to clear this accent business up:
Some people don’t like Joanne’s accent bc it reminds them she’s not Amanda.
Some people don’t like the accent bc it reminds them she’s not American.
Some people *Do* like the accent bc they think it makes Joanne more attractive.
Some people didn’t like the accent because it seemed to accentuate a certain style, one of structure, formality, and professionalism, where what’s typically expected in a good vlog is a more friendly, personal, and intimate feel. This is why her accent annoyed me. But closer analysis reveals its not Joanne’s accent, but her behavior and “on-screen” personality, that ultimately make the difference regarding this point. To which I have to say she is doing rather well, but still has a ways to go.
As for the rest, she’s not American or Amanda…and, you know what - that’s ok. Most of us just want to feel we are seeing the “real” Joanne.
And “OMG JC IS SO HOT I LUV CLASSY BRITS!” comments belong in the trash, frankly.
Thanks and have a great wkend!
I 53rd the motion to keep your native dialect!
Now, if you were an east-Asian teaching one of my engineering classes I was subjected to in college (Technical jargon and strong Indian accent = I was lost! dialect training has it’s place.), it might be a different story . . .
. . . But you’re intelligible already!
I love the fact that that the voice coach thinks Joanne has a standard English accent - she’s obviously never been here other than via the TV. I think what she wanted to say is “Joanne, you have an Oxford accent.” A.K.A. BBC English.
Try a night out in somewhere like Newcastle on the north east coast of the UK and you’ll see what I mean.
Although badly recorded in alot of instances here’s a page dedicated to different regional accents in the UK. All of them
can be clearly understood - which means they didn’t really get near the core of the accents - but it gives a flavour.
http://www.ku.edu/~idea/europe/england/england.htm
Any ‘ow, if tha’s gonna lake wi’ accent, owt she as a go a’ ‘l be reet,
Mind thee, tha’s’s dialect n’all n’ thas’ll be proper shuck n’ brussen tup wi’thissen if tha’ blathers like mi sen.
Hehe .. you might lose most of viewers though.
I already like your American accent better than mine.
Nooo!
Don’t lose your sexy british accent!
Reminds me of the TikibarTV Rocketboom episode - “worcestershire” should be pronounced “wooster”.
Joanne, RB 1.0 was all about injecting the host’s personality into the broadcast, which is also what vlogging is about.
RB 2.0 will achieve success when your watchers see enough of your personality to feel like they are connecting to you on a personal level.
This show was fun and interesting, but I hope that it was just done for fun and that you have no intention of Americanizing your voice. If we want to see people acting as though they are someone they are not we can watch the mainstream media.
Thanks for the fun today. Once again Joanne - you are at your best in the field!
Your (english) accent is no problem! ! ! ! !
Don’t go changin’…to try and please me…. Sorry.
Joanne:
DON’T CHANGE!
(You’re just doing that to tease us, aren’t you? ;-)
-s
don’t change the accent, just be yourself :)
btw your french is pretty darn good too !
it’s a great idea to change your accent, another things you should change also are:
1- get blonder.
2- give your hair more volume, with curls.
3- you need more makeup.
4- smile with more rudeness, americans like that.
5- chew gum, that’s sexy.
6- wear only t-shirts. bwahah.
Wahoooo… very intersting and funny.
Imagine all the work I have to do with my froglishaemrican???
(well, I know you can’t imagine, that was just to comment ;-))
Hilarious!
Speaking from the westcoast of Canada (with a Canadian accent), I think that the various accents that are heard around here everyday are delightful. They are a part of what makes each person unique.
But Joanne has been in the States for 2 years, for God’s sake! She should have conformed by now. We should all encourage the Americanization of Joanne Colan.
Not.
Now, Joanne, you were really adorable in this episode!
This was so adorable. I love people who can laugh at themselves. I’m smitten!
This also opens up a whole slew of comedic possibilities…
You can keep the map, the clicker, even a cardboard model of that other girl that existed before you whose name I can’t recall… we’re sorry, we won’t bother you anymore with our pitiful and capricious nuisances, but please, PLEASE!, don’t threat us with taking away your accent!
Changing that would be a travel from the sublime to the ridiculous (No offense to US citizens).
I have to say it’s a bit annoying and weird when people proclaim their love for you in the comments…but I have to say it was pretty darn adorable hearing you try to speak in an American accent.
A nice show for Friday! Good weekend, everyone!
I think this is the most I have enjoyed watching rocketboom since the switch. Thanks!
Everybody should check out that “Ehrensenf” version of Rocketboom. Even in German it’s pretty funny to watch.
Last thought… Has anybody mentioned the connection between Rocketboom and They Might Be Giants?
You sound great, if you swing an american accent than you’ll blend in with other vloggers. It’s not over the top in any way. Keep up the good work!
Please DON´T do it!!!!!!!!!!
I really appreciate to hear that accent. I love english accent. So please stay uncommon. That are the things, that make RB special.
Hope to hear some english accent on monday and in the future…
Greetings from Germany!
Sebastian
It’s my first time… posting a comment here ;)
I love your british accent! It’s sexy, classy and beautiful.
Well, have to say that every single language you use, sounds good. I can tell because I speak spanish ;).
Take care and good riddance.
I only come to this site because of miss colan I discovered today ..something is missing in show..mmm remove joanne and the story is blah..but just joann then she is ..you know I am not sure….After sheing kelly clarkson on the 9 at yahoo link whatever or o August 9 on the 9 of yahoo Mr T fashion show which was cool…. I am glad r-boomers still have a little voice but guye yahoo on the 9 is upstaging you how does that make ou feel?
Come on, don’t tell me Joanne is going to change the accent. Well, nothing I can do about it (and not sure if I want to do anything about, because it’d be her personal choice, and we should respect that). In any case, my preference is already publicly stated.
Hmm…perhaps time to start writing some sort of “nigerian” english, just to make RB comment section more international.
To the poster named ‘agro is absolutely incorrect’: Essentially, I agree with you. But, Sir, insulting someone when trying to prove that one is wrong is simply uncalled. I don’t want to know what you would say if ‘agro’ has been saying nasty things or insulting someone here.
PS Congratulations RB for the last two episodes. Special congrats for Ruud Elmendorp for the fantastic job.
I forgot to specify that I’m not nigerian. My point was trying to make more imperfect my already non perfect English.
Joanne . . . standard English? It’s posh northern isn’t it Joanne. Fess, up.
I think the English accent is sexy.
Joann please keep your English accent. American accents are so bland to us.
whatever you do, be yourself
you’re already perfect as you are
Hmmm. Joanne’s “southern” accent sounds a little Texan. I wonder where that influence comes from. ;-)
This is the episode that finally won me over to Rocketboom 2.0
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t loose the accent, please don’t!!!! Pleeeeeeeease!!!!!
don’t loose that sexy accent.
be yourself, thats why it’s working…
I don’t think she’s serious about losing the accent, guys. This show had me smiling wide…one of my favorites. Very cute.
I love your accent! The Brittish one is very sophisticated. Not a bad American one though, but the Brittish one is nicer in my opinion! Stick with it. I do doubt however that you’re serious. It’s a very interesting subject though.
Obviously, this whole thread could be devoted to agro’s imbecilic comments.
Cate Blanchett didn’t do an American accent in “The Aviator”, she did a Kate Hepburn accent. And if he had ever actually seen a Kate Hepburn movie, he would know she didn’t have an American accent so much as a weird hybrid-New Englander footlights accent.
Cate nailed it, which is why she won the Oscar for her performance.
I’m with everyone here…Joanne, NEVER go American.
Nothing is sadder than watching lovely lasses such as Emilie Raven, Naomi Watts, Melissa George, Jacqueline McKenzie, Anna Paquin, Rachel Griffiths and others forsake their homeland accents to be accepted by American audiences.
Here’s someone from Connecticut trying to pass off a Southwest accent as authentic. Look how lame he sounds:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0Vu_37I7wA
Keep the English accent! The American is awful.
Don’t lose that accent! It’s one of the most charming things about you. Without it, you would sound like your annoying predecessor.
Interesting vlog, however.
I am sure that this episode was done in the spirit of Casual Friday - fun, whacky, entertaining. Joanne is perfect and no changes are planned , I am sure. I so look forward to Casual Fridays - starts off my weekend with a big smile on my face , and I cannot wait to see what next friday will bring.
Keep up the good work and kudos to the whole team at RB!
To Agro: Someone may have mentioned it, but Cate Blanchette is actually an Australian Actress and she was doing K. Hepburn’s new englandy accent and she did a scary-good job!
I think it’s a funny show. My hubby is an Aussie and everytime he tries an American Accent, he sounds just like Gomer Pyle. I prefer his sexy Aussie talk anyday!
Keep the English accent!!
Don’t change your accent!!
107th! or 108th, not sure…
i was highly entertained today — joanne’s chill presence and balanced conversational skills are increasingly enjoyable to me as she exposes more of her personality. also thought the content was fun and appropriate. i believe most comments above reflecting fear about joanne changing are understandable, but i viewed this as more of a symbolic gesture (beyond just the fun aspect). no matter how joanne modifies her presentation, i now trust completely that she and andrew will work to make it as enjoyable for us viewers as possible.
based on who joanne is, it’s hard to imagine even drastic changes in her accent not ending up being extremely likable or making me not want to come back for more. similar to how one of amanda’s many strengths was her silliness and therefore she could do anything ridiculous and we’d love it (even if just loving to make fun of it), one of joanne’s many strengths is her adaptability, and no matter how she evolves, i have confidence we’ll love it.
keep the accent.
try reporting interesting things without slanting views!
Well I didn’t think that I’d enjoy rocketboom without amanda as much. (sorry I should have probably written this sooner.) Howerv you have been doing a great job on this. I’ve quite enjoyed some of the more political stories that you’ve covered. Oh also this is the first time I’ve written. Because I subscibe through itunes and I’m in the UK I generally tend to listen to yesterdays episode each day. You trying to learn a british accent reminds me of an episode of East Enders where they introduced an “american” obviously they couldn’t afford to actually find an american actor so within a couple weeks she had a british accent again. I’m Canadian and I’ve been over here for about 6 years now and people seem to love a foreign accent so don’t bother trying to change it. Well that’s my two cents, I was actually inspired to write because of wednesdays story but oh well.
Fuckin-A! For a month now, I have been holding back on a verdict.
Now the drumroll please.
You are BETTER than what’s her name.
Just lighten up some more. You’re among friends. You don’t need to be nervous anymore.
John Weeks
Joanne! I personaly love your accent and I am in the states. But I am behind you 100% on what ever you choose to do :-)
Ok. so, clearly no one sane wants you to drop your english accent–myself included. it makes my ears stiff when I listen to rocketboom these days. Anyway,I propose that you follow up today’s story by filming monday’s episode twice and offer an english version and an american version. You can demonstrate your new found skill and you can give everyone the opportunity to judge a show on something other than how incredibly attractive your english accent is–not that that’s not enough. Take until next friday, if you must.
Next fryday Take spanish lesson will be fun!!!!
Feel the love. What more can I say…you did the near impossible task of getting people to forget about…um…ol’ wasshername.
And I too am in love with you.
Keep up the good work.
zip
I’ll be your professor Henry Higgins if you’ll be my Eliza Doolittle!
“The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain.” Repeat until you are madly, uncontrollably, desperately, and irresistably in love with me.
That was so much fun to watch. I’d love to see you do a whole episode in an American accent. But just one show.
Cute.
Yeah, JoCo don’t bother. The British accent is great, especially since you deliver news, it works well.
You don’t sound posh, just genuine. Don’t bother with an American accent.
I have to say that this whole episode was cute.
Lovely Joanne,
Please do not forget that some people in UK also enjoy your brilliant show as much as those in the States. :-)
Just be yourself, please~
Joanne! Don’t lose the lovely accent! It’s so attractive, and I think it’s half of why I love watching RocketBoom everyday :)
JoCo is lovely regardless of the language. Her beautiful smile and mannerisms are universal. Rocketboom has moved out of the trailer park.
Joanne, don’t lose the accent! I can immitate a wide range of British accents (8 years in British international schools will do that to you) but I wish my normal one wasn’t so American. Maybe I need some dialect coaching.
You sound very BBC english, which is perfect for your reporting job, plus it’s very sexy. A girl with a cute accent can get me to do anything.;)
NOOOOO!! Don’t change your accent! British accents make people 10x hotter than normal!
Hmmmm …. must have been a strategy to find out if we all like your accent … we don’t.
WE LOVE YOUR ACCENT!
Its the voice that could launch a thousand ships … its the voice that evokes the very best of English maidenhood …
… so keep the accent.
But! It would be fun to hear you try to wax American now and then … or Indian or just dialects of the Southern states. Wow … you do make a sexy hillbilly gal …. sexpecially when you’re stroking your kazoo ….!
We love you joanne.
Bill in Dallas.
When you’re ready to work on that Texas accent, give me a call. Email me for my phone number. Ahm reddy when yew are!
Very amusing! But please be yourself. You gain nothing by immitating us.
No!!! Don’t lose the British accent! It’s one of the reasons I look forward to viewing Rocketboom nowadays.
(And trust me, I’m from Louisiana, and that wasn’t a very good Southern accent. :)
Joanne! Don’t change your accent. It’s delightful. But this was really interesting to watch. What a treat. I just discovered Rocketboom and I think it’s fantastic! I look forward to watching more, preferably with British accent! ;) Can you teach us how to speak in a British dialect with what you learned in your class? hee hee!
NO! DON’T DO IT! You may be tired of hearing people remark on your accent, but PLEASE don’t let that push you to trying to sound like “one of us.” We need to hear all sorts of accents to be reminded that not everyone sounds, or thinks, as we do!!! And anyway, surely much of RB’s audience is international.
What a love fest this has been today!!!!
I guess the verdict is in. Eliza Doolittle can ditch the Henry Higgins approach.
It’s vexing to think that Joanne will become an American, when I just got used to her being British. As for her “losing” her accent, I would hate for her to travel back across the pond with only an American accent, while we hold her sultry corset-laced upper-class dipthongs hostage here in the U.S.A. May we give her a Canadian accent as a consolation prize, I know it isn’t much, but they do both have the same Queen, eh?
Yes, Black Eagle, earlier when I insulted Agro for being incorrect about Cate Blanchett’s Hepburn accent, well, that wasn’t nice. I agree.
I insulted Agro because I myself am a pretensious ass and I know one when I see one (or read their comments).
Although it isn’t politically correct I still stand by my attack on Agro.
You, Black Eagle, are a kind and gracious soul. I am not.
Agro is still a pretentious ass… and yes, so am I. But the fact remains Blanchett’s Hepburn accent was IMPECCABLE!
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go out into the night and try to get a life.
Joanne,
I’ll watch you every day regardless, but I prefer your English accent. I am from the west coast and have always subconsiously added 20 or so IQ points to anyone I hear with an English accent and subtracted the same amount from those with southern US accents. Can’t help it, I guess.
Dane
STOP!!!!! Don’t touch that accent!
Why would you want to sound like everyone else? Your accent is fantastic just the way it is!
What’s all this then? I thought she said there had been comments made about her accent not that she was going to get “Americanized”! Just in case, keep the British accent! I’ts not like you’re an Eastender or from Somerset…
In recent news it stated the “guitar solo” is dead. (basically cause nobody knows how to play real guitar anymore—-my comment) so Joanne next Friday could you pick up your ax and play a solo a la Frank Zappa from Shut Up ‘n Play Yer Guitar which is simply a collection of guitar solos.
Or find a musician teacher like you did today to teach you.
Looking forward to hear you kick some “rock” ass!
I think people are paranoid…
Anyway, I look forward to hearing how far you’ve progressed on Monday! ;)
I’m all for the accent modification, but rather than American, could you go for Italian instead?
Lets see, that’s 148 dudes in love with you and your accent, No Wait, I make 149.
That’s what makes you unique.
An accent automatically makes a woman 10 times hotter.
The only thing you need to change is to Marry Me.
Git ‘R Done !!! Gotta applaud the attempt to learn. An occaisional Shakespeare reference might be educational for your viewers. My vote is for “To Tame a Shrew”
“The guitar solo is dead”? Did Jeff Beck die or something? BTW: Joanne what music do you listen to?
It would also be interesting if you learned a thick Brooklyn accent. Hey, you got Joanne Colan ova heer!
last !!!!!
What’s happening, Joanne?
There’s nothing wrong with your British accent, I thought that is sexy.
Besides, just be yourself, okey?
Pls, pls, pls, pls~~~~
Dun try to do anything to change your accent~~~~~
Keep your own accent. It’s part of who you are.
Joanne you are complete doll with your accent. Don’t change for anyone! Friday’s was the best episode for the week. I like you can laugh at yourself. You’re doing great, keep it up and have a fab weekend.
Although I found your attempts at an American accent adorable I’d have to concur with the commenters suggesting you keep your own. If you feel selfconscious about it then do what makes you feel better. But I don’t think you need to change a thing. Of course I go along with the “accents are attractive” club. :)
..
My good God ,, don’t change you accent, don’t stop speaking french from time to time and never ever change your lovely nose (o well just covering all coners, just in case)..
Do a whole show with the new accent. Then throw out the show and let us watch the outtakes :)
S.
First, keep the British accent.
Second, from talking to friends who work in radio, advertising and other types of broadcasting, I’ve come to a few conclusions on spoken “accents”. It seems that most Americans will pay more attention to a British accent than any other. We equate it with culture and education. The next attention grabber is the Australian accent. My radio friends are convinced that using a Brit or Aussie for voice overs make an advertisment stand out from the crowd.
The accent of the American South is equated with poverty and stupidity. If you want to make a character appear stupid, give him a Southern accent.
I wish I could speak with either an RP or Estuary English accent.
2nd Setarcos Idea
Keep the accent.
As long as you’re understood, who cares what’s your accent
Besides, from the video , changing accent looks hard work.
If you survived living in US with your brit accent, You don’t need to change it
What a cute episode. But really, I like your accent just the way it is. Fun to watch you try on some Americanese though :)
No. Anglo Saxon pride! Don’t change your accent luv!
Not even Katherine Harris can change the result of this vote.
People obviously Joanne’s accent. Next week let’s play with her hair.
Although, since we obviously love Posh Jo so much, let’s save a future Casual Friday for Cockney Jo.
Whaada ya say?
Hello Joanne,
absolutely I concur with all the other commentators: Your accent is perfect as it is! I’m just trying to train my British and get rid of my Chicago accent (nothing against Chicago, though!!!), and it’s not easy!
I already like your rp presentation much more than Amanda’s with her ultra-sharp “sss”, hooa, I couldn’t bear it! You really come across professionally, naturally and totally lovely!
Greetings from Berlin!
Interesting comment Irish Hermit considering the fact that a great deal of the Southern accent is derived from Scot-Irish. LOL! So join the Stupidity-Poverty club why don’t yas!
I think your accent is great! It was a very interesting article, but I hope you don’t change it!
I’m from Boston and pronouce some things with a long-a:
Sopranos: So-pahhh-nos.
Miranda: Mir-ahhh-nda.
Bathroom: Baaathroom.
But I do say “Ask” with an SAE accent.
There is no way that Joanne would really try to change her accent. I don’t buy it and to me, that is what made this vlog so funny today.
I would love to sit around a table with Joanne and practice my English accent.
Talley-ho.
from middle america we dont want you to change at all beautiful
I think your accent is great. Why Change it? Accents are like a fingerprint of where we are from. Your southern accent was pretty lousy but hey so is my british acccent. As a Southerner I am proud of the way I talk.As for Irish Hermit’s comment, he is obviously a biggoted Yankee (yes we still use that word). I have a Southern accent but not a Southern/ hick/country accent. There is a difference, and believe me southerners can tell the difference. The South has come a long way and it is no longer as rural, backward, or biggoted as it once was. Virtually all serious farmers today have a college education and many that I know have a masters in agriculture, yet you Yankees will still perceive him as less intelligent as some shmuck in Chicago that loads boxes onto trucks.
Ok, I have gotten off track. Joanne what about a show where you have people with different accents speak and have people try to guess where they are from?
Catch yall later.
Ms. Joanne,
Suggest you just be your self in all aspects of your being to include the way you speak.
Glennnnnnnn
I’m with all the rest of the guys. Don’t change that accent! It’s lovely.
No no no… Don’t try to lose your British accent for a boring American accent!!!
Your accent is sexy, leave it alone!
No no no… Don’t try to lose your British accent for a boring American accent!!!
Your accent is sexy, leave it alone!
I like your accent though!!
I love your accent, please don’t change it! You did do a good try though…
Cute episode, thanks. Keep your accent!
NOOOOOO!
Don’t let the yanks change a thing about you!! They’ve americanised you enough already!!
Its bad enough this spell checker is trying to put a ‘z’ in americanised! xx
Dixie:
I didn’t say that Southerners were stupid or poor. I just said that the accent is equated with those two things.
I personally find the accent of the people of Kentucy most melodious. But in the world of broadcasting Southern accents, Black accents, Hispanic accents, and Irish accents are trouble.
Advertising agencies, broadcasters, and clients want their spokes people to have Standard American (California), British (Received Pronunciation), or Australian accents.
Lets face it, everyone has prejudgices and everyone will face prejudgice. In broadcasting, video, movies, or vlogging those are the prejudgices about accents.
Yes, I know that there are exceptions to the rule. And those people usually have gobs of talent. So a Chris Rock or Dave Chappelle don’t have to sound “white.” But, they are far and few between.
And, when I was in the military and stationed down in “Dixie” way back when, I ran into my share because of my ethic background, religion and the way I spoke.
Joanne,
Pls dont change anything. Your british accent is what makes you so charmy.
When playing lead guitar meant something.

Don’t change a thing - music to my ears.
oh for god’s sake. the comments here have gotten almost as stupid as the ones over at the guy who doesn’t blink’s house.
this was a dull, meta, content-free episode. again.
this week’s rb sandwich: friday’s stale piece of bread with monday’s horrific piece of bread and some potentially tasty but slightly underprepared meat in the middle.
joanne: change whatever you want. change is good. there are probably 500 things that need changing on this show.
change change change!
and lose the map.
I now return you to idiotic commenters who demonstrate they have no concept of this program and nothing to say but what the first 200 people said.
(nice audience. no wonder nobody’s editing the wiki — they can’t find the pencil sharpener…)
Cool ’sode.
Black Eagle is absolutely correct says:
“You, Black Eagle, are a kind and gracious soul. I am not.
Agro is still a pretentious ass… and yes, so am I. But the fact remains Blanchett’s Hepburn accent was IMPECCABLE!”
I don’t like your irony towards me.
I never said you were a pretentious ass or anything for that matters. I just critiziced your attitude, without lacking respect. Its curious how semi-violent responses one gets in a message board. One wonders if it is worth keep posting or not.
I also did not say Mss Blanchett’s accent was bad or something.
But well…
this little chat is over, gentleman
Cool Stevie Ray! I think I got that concert or one similar off of Austin City Limits. Point taken as far as Stevie being a most excellent guitarist. Everything he played seemed to flow directly from his soul! However, there’s also Beck, Clapton, Johnny Winter, Billy Gibbons, Robert Cray, Ritchie Blackmore and Brian Setzer even… The general statement that the “guitar solo is dead” I still disagree with.
200 comments can’t be wrong. I guess Britboom it is!
Dearest JoAnn,
Please please please do not encourage the xenophobia!!!! If they don’t like your accent then they can pour red, white, and blue paint in their eyes and tie a flag around their head and hum quite loudly the Stars and Stripes! Why does NO ONE seem to understand melting pot!?!?!?!? What the hell is so great about America if not for the simple fact that its’ strength is its’ diversity?!?!?!?! I ADORE your accent. Please don’t make me move to the Greatest of Britains to hear such a glorious and rich way to speak the Queens’ English. Do not speak American. Please!
Why would you want to Americanize your speech? Next thing you know, you’ll be wearing tight t-shirts (mmmm…t-shirts) and flipping back & forth in your chair like a spaz (ala Whatzhername).
I came on board with RB 2.0 & I’m very happy with your progress. Keep up the good work!
Don’t try to lost it. The next thing you know you’ll be trying to be ANOTHER thing that you’re not and trying too hard and part of your tremendous appeal is who YOU are - accent and all.
Don’t be a daft apeth, trying to change your accent. goodness me. It was bad enough when you pronounced tomato like an American. Cringearama.
No! Joanne, your accent is beautiful and so are you! ;)
I think Rocketboom has increased its credibility, professional status and overall worthiness because you are now the host. Whatzername didn’t have a pinky’s worth of charisma compared to you. You ARE a star and you should keep your beautiful accent to go with that beautiful face and beautiful mind!
I’m Italian and i can garantee that in my country every accent is a language itself. It is not a matter of accent, if everybody understand what the speaker says.
The fact that Rocketboom is shoted in NY makes it a NY vlog?. i don’t think so.
Joanne, BRAVA e BELLA! ;)
first off who told Joanne Colan that her non-american accent was distrubing or not right for the show, needs to be smacked! I think it makes the show and is a welcome change so i say Joanne DO NOT LOSE YOUR ACCENT PLEASE for the love of everything don’t listen to the Yanks keep it!
I yink Joannski should hone up on her Russian and speeek wit Russian axent.
That “Southern” accent made me wince. It was like I was in the john in a trailer in Swansea hearing Britney Spears drinking in the living room. Porkchop needs to be fried. Please do not do that again.
I love the look of the “Dialect Coach” when Joanne attempts the southern accent. Her face twists. Priceless.
Do not change the accent!
You go, cousin!
For the sake of all things good and right in this world, please do not change your accent!!
Stay true to your British roots and let the American-Centric fans just deal with it!
But if you must change it, how about something a little different…maybe chinese, or Icelandic.
Your “standard British” accent sounds really sweet. It always sounds sweet when women speak with that accent. Don’t try to put on an American accent. You won’t be comfortable in front of the camera trying to speak with an accent you are not used to.
