    Fun, but awkward.

    Appealing, but goofy.

    Interesting, but useless.

I’m still trying to figure out what keeps drawing me back. Could I be a victim of behavior control via some clever subliminal internet-based techno-psychological manipulation, or am I really just curious, with too much time on my hands? Perhaps RB is simply creative enough to be entertaining.

In any case, resistance seems futile.

  46. according to the sad little wiki on this site, 500,000 people will watch this today.

    i don’t believe that.

i also find it hard to believe that someone with that type of audience wouldn’t be able to attract some interesting people to work on this thing.

waddle through Pearl Paint and tell the first art student you see that you’ll put her stuff in front of a half a million people.

i have a feeling you’ll get something far more interesting than an ex-vj playing mouth harp for over a minute with NO OTHER CONTENT IN FRAME.

drew: you’re going to be 40 and look back at this and say “wow, what an amazing missed opportunity.”

this site has rapidly degenerated into a pretty girl reading digg headlines.

when you’re doing this right, digg will be pulling content from you — not you sucking ideas from them.

i suggest you come up with some ideas and do them, fast.

even if they’re just wacky art projects!

YOU should be projecting stuff onto buildings, not just pointing a camera at somebody who can’t even be bothered to talk about someone else who got off his ass and projected stuff onto buildings.

otherwise rocketboom is just a leech on culture. and not a particularly well-executed one.

  47. Uhh… that’s one way to help the lighting issue. Loved it.

But seriously, on a technical note. Why didn’t the white border background of first VJ day pick match the white border of the homepage? I know one is a static html color and the other is video, but wouldn’t it be cool if they matched?

@ “meanguy” - RB is less of a “leach on culture” than CNN, MSNBC, FOXNEWS, and PBS. And by the way if you respect copyright law the term leach shouldn’t even apply at all. If anything these outlets are creative replicators of culture.

How about V-J day, celebrating the fact that an invasion of the Japanese mainland wasn’t necessary, where every Japanese teen, woman and child had been schooled and were prepared to defend their Emperor until their dying breath, making the current horrors in Baghdad looking like a beach party.

V-J Day. A celebration that an estimated one million Japanese civilians and estimated two million Allied soldiers weren’t needlessly sacrificed in house to house, cave to cave fighting.

  77. thanks for an entertaining episode. joann’s eye contact during her performance is priceless — it seems to have a combination of “this is fun” and simultaneously “am i really awake and doing this of my own accord”. my take is that this blend of not taking yourself too seriously mixed with showing us interesting bits and solid field reports is what is contributing to the show’s new broadly consumable flavor. amanda had her own flair in delivering that too, but it felt more niche-oriented to me, at least for her duration on rb (which is what was needed at the time).

also, to address a few points from meanguy — i think i sense where you may be coming from, and i don’t think anything you point out is invalid. however, i think the show has passed the original niche style of “find the first art student”. while that would indeed be wacky as you stated, it’s not in line with what the video blogging community expects today. and the truth is that expectations do exist on a larger scale now as opposed to early 04. the randomness of such an endeavor might not be prudent considering where vblogging is positioned (read: “lots of people with money and serious enough agendas looking to invest in and use the medium for wider application”). and to risk sounding like i’m speaking on behalf of the rb staff, i doubt that such a crap shoot would be very good use of their time at this stage in the game.

secondly, based on what drew has demonstrated about his attitude about rb, i doubt he’ll be doing much looking back at all at age 40 (don’t know how old he is, i’ll just work off the assumption that meanguy’s right about drew being under 40). i would expect he’ll be looking forward if anything with minimal regrets — rb has changed the landscape period, that cannot be changed, and it’s a rather massive accomplishment in itself. as amanda is in the process of proving, opportunity is not scarce for her as a pioneer in this area. drew would likely find the same, even if rb 2.0 were to tank. maybe he’ll be looking back to remember some of the high and low points to move forward, but probably too busy to be regretting opportunity. plus, i’m not sure what opportunity you’re speaking of, that he’ll miss out on — to make a lot of cash? to entertain viewers? those aren’t things that drew or any of the pioneers in this field are going to miss out on unless they want to at this point, in my opinion. the show is positioned, the industry is ripening, and people are paying attention while opening their checkbooks. it sounds to me as if the opportunity you’re describing is stage a, to change the landscape, which he and amanda already did.

lastly, i agree with your point about how digg will be pulling content from rb if they’re doing things “right”, but i also believe your point is incomplete and restrictive. in stage a, when rb was setting much of the stage for the cultural feel and experience of vblogging, rb would in fact make references to digg and the likes, and their sites, new features, stories, etc. and the diggs of the world would make references to rb when appropriate for them. back then, original stories such as what you’re describing were done by anyone — not that there was less content or news necessarily, but there was less striated purpose to each organization’s output. one could argue that back then, amanda was a pretty face reading digg headlines also, with interspersed random stuff like her dancing in various cities and so on. but now, things have changed. digg is not solely relying on vblogs to pull content. they have their own purpose, just as rb has. what’s more critical at this point is not for rb to make headlines because of their original content generated, but to make headlines because more people make rb viewing a part of their daily routine. this particular stage could be akin to the high-tech marketing strategy of capturing the early majority. focusing on the projects such as you mention is not necessarily the best strategy — yes, it might be helpful in blend with other strategies, but it is far from what is required comprehensively. and actually, i think today’s show is a perfect example to satisfy your suggestion that drew “come up with some ideas and do them, fast” — most of the comments above show that it was a success, and it was definitely an unusual idea, and we know that these shows are done on a compressed schedule — so he is already on the track of what it appears you’re asking for. i’m guessing this project was much more difficult and involved than posting the works of the first art student come across in a supplies store. i’ll even go so far as to use your words, and say it is MUCH wackier than the art student idea. most viewers and potential investors will recognize this and note it for what it’s worth.

thanks for reading, great shows the past 2 days in my view…

What’s the difference between jumping rope with your brother and playing a fake Jew’s Harp. I don’t see anything different in the format other than someone left and someone else is now doing it. In RB 1.0 there were numerous days where “twaddle” should have been the watchword and sometimes we get that today. You try being brilliant every day 5 days a week and then stand up to receive your report card. For having barely done 23 shows so far, I think JC is advancing rapidly. I wonder what your comments would be like at this stage with RB.1. Geez, the poor girl couldn’t figure out how to find a bra and sweater combo that fit properly until well into the second month! Is that the kind of critiqueing that we should be doing. No, not for her and not for JC. (although dressing herself doesn’t seem to be a problem)
I hope this show always maintains its “do it on the fly” attitude. That is how it began and still does alright by me in that domain. Comparing RB to other sites neither honor’s them or detracts from RB. It is usually just a ploy to steer traffic to something that YOU like. Well, lots of people await their RB surprise everyday. And they usually get it. Which is maybe your problem. You don’t “get it!”

Let’s hope in balance that the lives saved in Man recognising his(in general) own stupidity means that we never forget just how many people have died in wars without ever knowing why - ON ALL SIDES.

So then i thought I may as well continue - IN CAPITALS - I’M NOT SHOUTING - I’m simply using capitals : )

YES - especially when it sounds that good - where is the insult - common variation is Jaws Harp. Makes sense anatomically speaking but next stop is not calling africa … Africa. The Jew’s harp has a proud history,
or is that a history to be proud of ? However if it’s up for grabs - then the aaaACHHOoo Harp is fine. (however it’s spelt)

I cannot wait to get to RB everyday - it is so creative, and entertaining. Many of the critics miss the point of RB. They seem to want it only a certain way and if it is not so that day, then they are all upset to the point of being mean and nasty. These critics forget that everyone of them has his or her opinion about the way they want RB to be! The variety and the “catch you by surprise” presentation is what I love about RB and what tells me that the folks at RB are creative, bold , not afraid to experiment and put it out there.

I cannot say enough good things about Joanne. She is so game at trying it all, and has such a good time doing it. She is such a delight and I agree wholeheartedly with the person who voted her “the world’s favorite girlfriend.”

  90. Are you sure that was a Jews Harp? It looked too expensive.

    By the way:
Being from the South originally, I think she could have had a more authentic southern appearance by wearing a sun dress which matched the drapes. Oh, and she could have muddy, chigger-bitten legs poking out. To complete the illusion, she could play the Jews harp while she nursed her little brother who also happened to be her cousin. Man what a messed up part of the world.

Great fun though. Thanks for the flashback.

  93. Listen. I’ve been watching this girl like all the rest of you morons and I’m gonna say her earnest willingness to do stuff like playing the Jew’s harp (in perfect time, I might add, even if her singing was half a beat off…I don’t mean beat off, I mean a bit off the beat, you pervs!) and doing so with a smile has convinced me they’ve found the right girl.

    Way to go, joanne!

While I’ll go along with you on the recent Lebanon-Israel brouhaha being little more than a test case, encouraged by the U.S., to gauge the widespread air destruction capabilities of civilian infrastructure that some of the more diehard NeoCons in the Bush administration hope to be able to try against Iran someday, you’re simply wrong about the Japanese in WW2.

The July 26 Potsdam Declaration listed terms for surrender demanded by the Allies, and was quite specific as to what would happen if the Japanese continued to fight.

But, the Japanese government clung to hope that the coming invasion of the home islands would be beaten back at great cost to the invaders, making possible a more favorable negotiated peace.

On August 6, the Hiroshima bomb verified the “prompt and utter destruction” promised by the Potsdam Declaration.

Rather than surrender, there was still much debate within the Japanese government as to whether the destruction was caused by one bomb, or several multi-ton conventional weapons. They had plenty of time to surrender, should they have so desired.

They did not. No amount of rewriting of history can change that.

The second bomb three days later, in conjunction with the Soviet’s crushing of Manchuria, shattered the Japanese fantasies.

While there is no doubt that having Stalin witness the atomic destruction was an added bonus, the bombs were dropped in the face of refusal to surrender.

And even at that, it took countless meetings amongst the Japanese Emperor and ministers before the Japanese Emperor decided to end the war by accepting the Allies’ terms, five days after Nagasaki!

And one only has to look at the history of fighting in the Pacific Islands, the most bloodthirsty of the war, to realize what an invasion of Japan could result in.

As it was, thousands of Japanese women threw themselves and their children off of cliffs rather than surrender to the Allies as various Pacific islands capitulated.

You can count the millions of Japanese descendants that are alive today, that never would have been, had their forbearers sacrificed themselves in fighting off an invasion of the homeland.

Atomic warfare may well yet result in the destruction of the planet. But, no amount of revisionist history can ever make the case but that those two bombs in August 1945 ultimately saved millions of lives.

  99. re: just a thought…

What did the Japanese planes bomb? Military targets in Pearl Harbor.

What did the Atomic bombs hit? Cities with a few hundred thousand civilians dead as a result.

    re: filmex

Are you trying to justify the atomic bombings? Regardless of WHY, the releasing of them was just plain WRONG.
