  7. This is a good show. And that was well done to say the least.
I say that before I mention that the topic didn’t resonate with me much at all. Not all RB viewers are actually into blogging anymore. To your credit, you have since reached beyond the blogosphere and into the GP. Happy to wait for tomorow mornings report!

  8. Once again, I like “Joanne’s” Rocketboom. She is funny, her news is interesting, and she doesn’t use profanity the way Amanda did. Very good job!

  10. For those of you that are still into “old media” (T.V.) there is a syndicated show called “Cheaters” that’s been on for about a year that is along these same lines except at the end of each show an entire film crew along with the “wronged ” person jumps out of a van and confronts the cheaters. It’s like watching a train wreck. You know it’s awful, and it’junk, (and probably staged) but it’s hard to look away.

  11. RB has consistently published content in the early morning over the last week or so. That’s quite impressive, RB et al.

Rivers always run to the sea, no matter what gets put in their way. ‘That girl Emily’ is just a pebble.

But..entertaining all the same. Have a nice day RB et al

  12. it would have been great if rb did this when all the amanda problem began replacing steven=drew, wife=host, emily=amanda. what a pity. and now we could be watching joanne interviewing amanda.

  13. I really don’t think, after the relaunch and all the fuss, that this RB deserves the 2.0 version designation. Really, it’s like RB 1.1 or 1.2 — same page design, same thumbnails, same archive, same logo, same video format(s) — but with less. Even RSS 1.0 and 2.0 were more different. Now in RB 2.0 we get only one story on a given day and only interviews and field reports seem to come off. And it’s not that the interviews are bad or lack polish. I just feel that I’m watching a travel show: nothing too deep, nothing too challenging, just feel-good-isn’t-that-nice kind of stuff. There are lots of other things I can watch if I want that.

There are plenty of issues to engage with in Emily, but none of them even gets raised. Honestly — and ad agency? Lying to us? In new media? For what purpose? They’re not just entertaining themselves, or least of all, us. Why didn’t RB follow this up? Or does RB not see a difference between what it aspires to be and Emily? Where does RB reflect anymore on what it means to be new media and who is and who should be doing it? Do you have a design vision beyond girl + camera + production = video blog with big audience? Captivating images are not just about the surfaces that reflect light. Peer into the darkness once in a while. We need to see there too. That would be journalism, and it still could be entertaining, too.

I think that all the publicity around RB over the last month has been unfortunate, as it hasn’t been possible to really do the kind of overhaul that is needed with all the newcomers looking int to see what’s up. Just to take a for instance, a lot of the comments about both Joanne and Amanda have been really sickening and degrading, and they end up distracting one from what’s really being done (or not) and who’s doing it (or not). It’s not that there isn’t considerable talent assembled here, but what you use it for. RB was always a little too much like MacMall, and now it is even moreso. Please show us that you are capable of reaching us where it means something. With a four or five front war in the works, a mid-term election, and the worst of hurricane season still ahead, you should have ample opportunities in the coming months. Please don’t squander them.

  14. Its easier to do one long story than patch together several. I think thats why we get feild reports. 1 shoot, a little editing, and its done. Safer for them to do after having been gone or late for so long. RB2 was obviously just an excuse. Little has changed for the better except for lovely Joanne.

  16. Ok - ok - OK.

    Here’s where it unravels -
    A.Viewer has written:
“RB was always a little too much like MacMall, and now it is even moreso. Please show us that you are capable of reaching us where it means something. With a four or five front war in the works, a mid-term election, and the worst of hurricane season still ahead, you should have ample opportunities in the coming months. Please don’t squander them.”

What is a Macmall - and just because you guys in the States keep starting wars doesn’t mean the rest of us elsewhere are terribly interested in hearing about it - let alone witnessing it and then spending our tax Euros trying to stop them, as for the hurricane season - HEAVENS ABOVE - does A.Viewer seriously believe that the RB Version (whatever - it’s hardly empiracle science) is watched by a State side audience only ?

Oh and just in case you missed it - you guys don’t really have elections - remember that one of your own former Presidents a certain Jimmy Carter pointed out that although he’s involved all over the world in monitoring free and fair elections - your system is so corrupt - they wouldn’t even send in a monitoring team as you guys apparently don’t meet the criteria required for structuring a fair election in the first place - so why on earth would the rest of us be interested in hearing about it ?

Just carry on RB - there’s a whole bunch of people out there, over there, in here and somewhere else that are having a blast.

Now where’s that donation envelope for Medcins Sans Frontier.

    =========================

RB, this expose was interesting only I think it’s more enjoyable encapsulated in a variety of reports. I loved the introduction to the hyperlinks embedded in the QTs, this allowed for more of a dynamic user experience, not just the news reported straight up, or any narrative for that matter. A bit long as other viewers commented but hey if you are having fun I can’t argue with that. Life’s too short!

  22. Good show today…One suggestion though, when you begin a piece, I think it would be wise to have Joanne introduce the segment as she is the face of RB. All I saw of her today was the side of her face and that was a bit disappointing.

  26. Very interesting. Hope this one makes it to MoveDigital (nag, nag, nag).

I remember a series of fake political ads which featured the “candidate” espousing various wild and crazy ideas like outlawing left turns. Everyone started talking about these ads at work. Finally it was revealed that the series was a stunt to demonstrate to advertisers that radio advertising works. (This was back before mp3 players and the web, though, when it was a lot more common to listen to the radio.)

  27. Wow, this woman is clueless! I’m amazed that she distances herself from it being her idea or her somehow being responsibile for contributing to a campaign to mislead people. She has no idea what a blog is, but contributes propoganda and then convinces herself she’s helping people. “Husbands and wives reading together”. It was fun!

Clueless. Check out Edward Bernay’s propoganda you dingbat - you’re being used.

  28. RB,

First of all, i want to thank you for the work you are doing. i think it is crucial, a genuinely pivotal part of the evolution of the Internet.

But, i am motivated to write because i noticed a shift in sensibility that i think is primarily due to the shift in the “face” of RB.

i should note that i came to RB as a result of an RSS feed entry across google about Amanda Congdon leaving. i went to check out RB and what the fuss was about and was pleasantly surprised by what i saw.

i have been watching RB with Joanne Colan and i very much enjoy the show. But, i feel there is an edgy quality that is missing from the shows with Ms. Colan. She seems very talented, intelligent and is exceptionally attractive. But, to me she feels just a little too comfortable in her skin and too well-adjusted for the effect that i think RB was originally intending.

i’m not an avid Amanda Congdon fan, i’m simply noticing that like Ms. Colan, Ms. Congdon also seemed talented, intelligent and was certainly very attractive, but above all this, she brought an edge, a little something off-kilter that both framed and lifted the RB “message”.

i don’t know if there is much to be done about this. i am simply noticing it and felt compelled to share my impressions. Keep up the good work.

    Best wishes,

    –leithaus

  29. ‘Good’ marketing sucks more than regular marketing because it is more effective. What is the point of catching someone’s attention if you don’t have anything to say? The whole BAMN [place ad here] industry is the same as getting people ‘to look over there!’ and then saying ‘made you look!’ Anyone see anything other than a cheap, corny dishonest gimick here? Me neither.

  30. One of the great wonders of this exercise was the ability to analyze the psychodynamics of the “cheated” female.

What would have been even more fascinating would have been for Steve to start responding back via the same sorts of channels “I wouldn’t have crashed landed, if you would have kept your hand on the stick.” etc. A sordid soap opera played out in the media.

The lady who wrote Emily is a very gifted writer and you should use her to do explorations into the “human psyche” more often.

As usual, Joanne seems incredibly cuddly and relational. Perhaps Steve was carrying on with her. That would be the ultimate switch ending. The moderator of the cheated woman interview is the one cheating with the cheated woman’s spouse. Or something to that effect.

    Thanks for the good story.

  31. What a disappointing visit to RB. First was the “special report” on some journalists fabricating a lie…we see that in the media every day. Second, some disgusting person from the third world is spreading germs and disease with their sneezing. Third, this comment will probably be deleted before three people can see it. Fourth, I respect what Joanne’s trying to do but I still miss Amanda.

  32. Half of the people on the Gulf Coast are still living out of suitcases.

We’re bogged down in a bloody civil war in Iraq thanks to a compliant media willing to act as White House stenographers.

And now a contrived performance-piece relationship breakup is pawned off as a new marketing scheme for a cable TV network, which results in more and more media attention regarding something that could not be any more trivial.

No wonder the terrorists hate us.

  39. Drew: You replaced my comment with yours. It was about field reports, production and RB2. I apologize if I offended you. I would like to see RB maintain if not improve upon its standing. I posted it simply to let you know what I see. Many others that do not post may have the same opinion. Beneath all the petty complaints, I believe people are really refering to what makes RB tick. I too am sick off the complaining and would like to see it replaced with a collective creativity. I’m sure the old host had a large pool of folks sending interesting suggestions for content. And with her, went the pool of resources. Today’s story, and all the other recent field reports would fit right in with classic rocketboom but I think by themselves, its not the same. I’m sure the new host is capable of being quick and spontaneous and I think people miss that part of the old RB. I hope this post makes it thru. Lord knows you’ve had a rough way to go and I don’t care to contribute that way. My last post had a bad tone and probably should have been mailed or something. At least I know you (someone) read it. Constructive or not, I’ll reserve criticism in the future. …hope this post will make it thru. Its not nearly as distasteful as some above this one.

Ye…I saw similar internet fishing story 6 years ago in Korea. One day I could see a hand painted poster on street. “Sarang Hae, Sunyoung-ah”(means I love you, Sunyoung!). My fiend I guessed it’s brilliant way of proposing your love. But it was a teaser advertisement by an internet startup for women. Sad…

  44. Edited daily content is a real kick in the butt. Editing anything with wit takes time - add to that the challenge of creating something news-worthy? It’s overbearing. Edit something for entertainment? You’ve never sweat so badly from stress.

Rocketboom survives as a grand example of what small organizations can produce daily or (in my case) somewhat frequently. you have to take it for what it is. In any case, newsy, funny, polished, rushed, the best delivery happens when the folks interacting with us are doing so naturally.

That’s when Joanne is at her best and that’s why Amanda got some first-rate job offers. So long as Andrew is providing workable content and allowing Joanne some natural control of the delivery, we’re all happy! We tease this show, but watch it everyday.
