  25. I personally like the way Amanda’s hair moves ever so slightly from some air source (fan perhaps). It is virtually the only animated activity for most of this post. This makes me revisit all those dreams I have of mass market video in general, if only there really was a “silence” button that not only muted the audio but also blanked the video as well.

I found myself on the edge of my seat waiting to see if Amanda would talk or bring some emotion to the clip.
It’s in the silence that we hear the most.
I am curious if you were able to do this on the first try or did it take several takes. I thought I saw you fighting back a smile once or twice.

It’s never knowing what to expect each day that keeps me coming back for more.
So in honor of the show I am going silent

When you become a disciple of Amandology, you learn how to communicate through mere transmission of thought. The hair flutter from time to time is used to emphasize certain emotions. This too will be taught to you. AS you have witnessed, the world would become a more peaceful place if we all practiced Amandology. Imagine, a world without cell phones! Thank you. Loved the 3rd story. Harigato to you too, fair haired leader.

I think it’s great that you raise causes that you support on rb. After all it is your show.

That said, two things imo would have made this a little more useful.

    1) You daily links should have linked the cause.

    2) 4m 33s is longer than most of your other shows. You get the point after the first minute, maybe two. After that, the viewer’s time is simply wasted, especially if they don’t know what the moments of silence are for.

Why is it that when anyone does a “moment/day/hour of silence” they feel as if it has to be some solemn and grim event. Nobody ever does a moment of silence with a grin on their face, a frown, or any other type of emotion besides the stern-faced look as if to say “LOOK AT ME! I’m importantly straight faced and tight lipped while being completely silent.”

Far too many people take the notion of a “moment of silence” to mean stop everything you’re doing and stare solemnly into the void as many do sitting in the pews at church during a particularly boring sermon. Why can’t a moment of silence be done while accomplishing something nuturing and beneficial to the mind, like reading a book or writing in a journal? I think you really could have done a much better job with this one Amanda and the RB team. You are very talented and creative individuals, and although I grealty appreciated the few minutes of silence you bestowed upon us today, you really could have used it to get a better message out.

  80. Interesting and creative way to express yourself. Having not heard of “day of silence” before this, I was baffled. But your show DID make me think about it and, thanks to the commenters before me, I was able to visit their site and see what it was about. So I guess it’s “mission accomplished” for you, although I would’ve preferred (and was expecting) to see you hold up a sign at the end with the point of the broadcast.

And since you shared your views, I’ll share mine. I’m not a supporter of any gay, transsexual or any other unnatural sexual “preference”. In that light, I shall not be silent today.

That said, I do NOT support bullying in any way for any reason. If the point was purely to speak out against bullying, I’d be with you.

I recall Conan O’Brian’s first broadcast following 911: instead of his usual opening, he came out and announced that he just didn’t feel like being funny that day. His reflections, also, were more poinient due to the deviation from the normal routine.

  131. Maybe this has nothing to do with that gay thing after all. I have another theory. I think Amanda has become a disciple of Meher Baba since she probably had the door of Scientology slammed on her. Baba, whom Pete Townshend chose as his personal Avatar, did from July 10, 1925 until his death in 1969, remain silent. Meher Baba said that his silence was not undertaken as a spiritual exercise, nor as a vow of silence, but undertaken and maintained solely in connection with his universal work.
“I am never silent. I speak eternally. The voice that is heard deep within the soul is My voice…the voice of inspiration, of intuition, of guidance. To those who are receptive to this voice, I speak. [1]
“Man’s inability to live God’s words makes the Avatar’s teaching a mockery. Instead of practicing the compassion he taught, man has waged wars in his name. Instead of living the humility, purity, and truth of his words, man has given way to hatred, greed, and violence. Because man has been deaf to the principles and precepts laid down by God in the past, in this present Avataric form, I observe silence.” So is this the new Amanda? Can Rocketboom survive such a conversion? Will our super star regain her voice and swear off false Gods? Tune in tomorrow. We’ll see which way her hair swishes then. Oh, and nice one on the number of comments today.

I know many of you are waiting patiently out there for what I am going to say on this. So I won’t keep you much longer. I am sure you all think that I would think that this protest was a horrible idea (if it is about the Day of Silence.). To the contrary. I think for our “progressive” friends this is definitely an improvement over grunge wearing, dope smoking, maggot infested IMF protestors we are so accustomed to from them. However, it doesn’t compete with my favorite form of liberal protest the “Die-in”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die-in It shows liberalism at its finest-DEAD.

So if I could put a command in to the liberal collective conciousness here it would be this: Why limit yourselves to just this topic and one day of the day of silence? This is such a good idea that the average person has no idea what you are ranting about. We’re guessing and since most of us don’t run in your cliques we just look about this and go about our merry way.If you guys like this so much can we get Ted Kennedy, Pelosi, Barbara Streisand, Hillary to sit and do these “days of silence” much more frequently?

Amanda- sweetie quit being a statue model and get back to what you do best and that is telling us what is new in the world of technology. On a serious note this symbolism over substance hurts the very gay people you love. The way I look at it it is the cruelest joke that they some called this group of people gay because their lifestyle is anything but happy. The amount of dommestic violence that happens in gay relationships is exceptionally high. They have a greater risk for suicide and 60% of gay relationships last between one and seven years that is unlike married couples. Sitting silently tacitly approving of this destructive lifestyle choices is anything but love to me.

  143. Andy: Didn’t John Cage do a “musical” piece called 4′ 33″?
    From: http://www.classicalnotes.net/columns/silence.html
“Here’s how one performance went: A tuxedoed performer came on stage, sat at a grand piano, opened the lid, occasionally turned some music pages but otherwise sat as quietly as possible for 4 minutes and 33 seconds, then rose, bowed and left. And that was it.”
Was this that? If so, it seemed like a spot-on interpretation.

Yeah, I saw a video of something like that…

I’ve been watching RB for a few weeks here, and I wonder how many of the negative posts here are “regulars.” It sounds to me like some paid-to-blog stoolie called out the dogs or something. I voted for Bush I, I voted for Bob Dole. Bush II and all his followers are not Republicans.

A Republican to me is someone who is strict about money, smart about warfare and small about government, and the Bushlet is none of these things. And as a Christian, I believe that any man that believes he knows the will of God is the worst kind of heretic. That means you, fundies.

And all of you wierdos who keep coming on to Amanda in your comments just creep me the F out. You’re just as frightening as the “neocon” comments.

All that said, I was disappointed in todays show. It was well performed, but poorly executed. It very smartly mixes both the style of Cage and the activism of the DoS - in a way, you mixed music with the absence of sound. But if you want to lead your viewers, you first have to point them in the right direction.

With no corroborating text or links to go with todays show, you practically invited all the negative comments. Now, that worked once for John Cage, but is that -really- the direction you wanted to take?

Here’s the problem as I see it: by not giving any context or forewarning, you only managed to preach to a portion of the converted - those who were already aware of the DoS. Those who were unaware of the DoS, but agree with the point it’s trying to make (like me), were left confused, but still technically part of the converted.

Those who are clearly against the DoS will never be converted, and you’ve merely antagonized them for no reason, when they could have been warned off by a summary or show description. And the segment you should have been shooting for, those famous “undecided” votes, were simply caught in the crossfire of your consequently diluted message.

So, basically, you completely undermined the message and presentation of todays vlog. What I’ll remember about this ep in two months, IF I remember, is not the DoS or John Cage, but that I thought you made a mess of the whole thing.

If you can’t thank Drew, Amanda and RB for using their vlog as a vehicle to disseminate the news as they see fit, then just shut the fuck up!

One of the hallmarks of RB is that it’s a technology that is capable of reaching millions at the speed of life, and this “statement,” “news,” “event reminder,” or whatever is in concert with everything else RB does. It is, in fact, as equal as making fun of Dick Cheney, or interviewing the pioneers of technology. It is RB.

And this has been bothering me for a long time: Guys: if you think Amanda, a 20-something, high-IQ woman, thinks any body comments coming from strangers is at all amusing, you are as stupid as we all think you are. Any attractive woman has become throughout her whole life being constantly hounded and is hyper-aware of jerk-offs objectifying women. Like I said before, egomeniacal bottom feeders who need to chime in any way they can.

So keep your body comments and hails of attraction to yourself. It’s a waste of server space.

You cracked me up when you welcomed Democrats to pratice a “Day of Silence”. That was really funny.

On a serious note - The domestic violence in gay relationships, the short duration of many gay relationships, and the mental anguish are some of the reasons given in support of gay marriage. Allowing gays to marry institutionalizes their relationships. This can provide better legal channels and decrease the shame for vicitims of domestic violence. It also codifies their commitment possibly leading to stronger commitments and longer relationships. It may also increase cultural acceptance and decrease the mental anguish.

Imagine what heterosexual relationship would look like if marriage didn’t exist.

Remember Those Star Trek Episodes with “The Borg” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bftzMzeameU Well many of these guys are never going to agree with me. So what we have found out today is that that our opposition thinks silence no advertising of the agenda is an effective successful form of protest. Let them think that. So yes by welcomming it with open arms I am putting a command in to “the borg” concsiousness so to speak like that episode “to sleep.” It ultimately, if you remember, destroys the ship. Oh well. Oh dear I revealed the plan for how to deal with liberals. LOL LOL LOL

Back to the serious note. I do agree with you that dommestic violence with gay people is serious. I think the pro gay people sweep this under the rug. I see where you are comming from in wanting to legalize their relationships but I think the answer is to tell them we love you and we want you to get out of this abusive lifestyle and we are here to help. I do part company with you slightly but I agree with you though their lives are tragic. Thanks again for you what you had to say.

The whole point of the musician not making any noise is to make the listener actually *that* much harder. You can hear all the small and tiny noises that normally go unheard, like when your fax machine went off in the middle of your v-blog. This is exactly the point behind the Day of Silence…so that people can be heard above the din what normally goes unnoticed around us.
