I don’t know who Ben is. I am Canadian and we don’t even have a Congress. Nevertheless, I wholeheartedly agree with justjeff. VOTE FOR BEN!

Ammanda- You don’t want to wear shirts supporting a federal candidate on your show. You might be running afoul of the Federal Election Commission due to McCain-Feingold. I think McCain-Feingold is wrong but that was the law congress passed and it does impinge upon free speech such as this but you need to be aware of it.

Next I have to tell you that you have throw a bone to your conservative viewers because they are the majority in this country and the more you decide to offend them the more you limit your growth potential. That translated out may mean limited ad dollars in the future. You have a great concept just leave the left wing clap trap out.

  8. Here’s more on the “Ben Shuldiner for Congress” Congressional (NY-19) race.

The candidates and the amounts of money raised are here - http://www.opensecrets.org/states/election.asp?state=NY&year=2006

    It’s a crowded Democrat primary.

If a Democrat wins in the November election it will be a big upset. But given recent events, it’s possible.

Perhaps RB would be more accepting of you expressing your opinion if you ended with some inane sophistic bromide like, say, “The spin stops here.”

    Ammanda-
I am not in favor of McCain-Feingold AT ALL. But what I am saying is that until congress passes the blog exemption (which was shelved last year) be careful. I just want to make you aware of it. It is a law that impinges upon our liberties and you should be allowed to wear what ever shirt you want to because this is America.

Rush Limbaugh (and I) would agree with you about what you said about Old Media vs. New Media and that people like opinionated voices. However, I do want your show to succeed and yes this is America you can go what ever direction you want but why do that when Air America can’t make it New York City? You know who the most successful liberal is on the radio today is? Alan Colmes and the reason being he is always throwing a bone to conservatives. Solid liberal formats do not have expanding audience bases in today’s new media market. I want people to see you but when you read the pledge of allegiance without saying God in there you turn off a lot of God-fearing people out there who will never get to the good part of what you have to say about technolgy or odds and ends.

  14. Impartial, unopinionated news has always been a fantasy; the most watched and most read newscasters have always voiced their beliefs about the news. No one would remember Edward R. Murrow if he read the news without commenting on it. If RB just read the news, we could get it anywhere (although without t-shirts and hair-flips). If Murrow similarly wore t-shirts, we’d still remember him, but not for his reporting.

Opinionated people are much more interesting, and with 3 million+ blogs available, its the opinions that make certain vlogs stand out..

But I’m too selfish. I want an actual entire conversation with both of you all to myself where we can talk like down to earth people, like over dinner or something.

I imagine you’ll both be super busy Thursday and surrounded by over-energized fans clamoring to relate to you how their changing the world too…

    Ah well. Nice show today!

  20. Great show today. Wonderful comment section. Can’t be pandering to those masses, I hope. Sounds sort of slimy. But I really really do regret I live 90 miles Upstate and cannot come down to meet and greet Thursday and get to know the “real me” (and the real Drew). Maybe you will have a super time and do it again…

  21. I may not always agree with the views of rocketboom but thats exactly why i watch it. I creates a debate that the mainstream media is phobic about.

Rf has a smart point, however mass media has gotten boring because of Fcc and scared television networks.
Mainstream networks have lost their appeal due to irrational fears of ever taking a stance.

    viva la rocketboom revolution

Amanada- OK you say you are never going to pander but you are pandering. You are taking what ever line the New York Times Editorial page throws at you or Daily Kos and buying it hook line and sinker without thinking about it critically. You can’t really say that you are daring to be different by being a liberal in New York City. I have yet to hear you be critical of any liberal. I want to challenge you here to start looking at the other side so people don’t say of your show “gee I could listen to NPR and get that” You have an opportunity to broaden your base. As I have said Solid Liberal formats do not generate expanding audience bases. Now you can say what you want but The New York Times Circulation is down- Brokeback Mountain hardly was a box office smash- and as I said before Air America can’t make it in the liberal mecca of New York City. Democrats have lost the White House, congress and look at their interest bases Union Membership is down, there are 1,800 abortion clinics in this country but there is double the number of pro life crsis pregancy centers, and the recent anti-war protests were a big fizzle.

But if you did start looking at things crtically you would see the good because of the Bush Adminstration we have a low 4.7 percent unemployment rate, you would see the numbers of casualities in Iraq is vastly decreased Saddam is gone(can’t threaten anyone from his jail cell), girls are in school in Afganistan, Wall Street is riding high, and there hasn’t been a single terrorist attack on the United States since 9-11.

Then again you do live in New York where you have one of the highest tax rates in the country. (That is why Ben may win because the conservatives there can no longer afford to pay the liberal high taxes and thus they are moving south) Eliot Spitzer is killing off business with his lawsuits and Hillary has failed to deliver the 200,000 jobs to New York she promised when she ran.

So in conclusion by not going out there and presenting the conservative side of things it makes you look simplistic and gets in the way of what you do best that is showing us the best and what is newest in technology. And if you don’t think so you should look at it as sad that you don’t have many conservatives in the comments section today because we are an ever growing majority of people. Someday you may want to interview some conservative and you may not get the interview If all you are doing is just showing one side this hurts your ability to be an effective player in the arena of ideas.

RF: The pretext of talking about Rocketboom in order to vent your opinions here is wearing thin. Time to take it to your own blog, I think. I’m sure you’ll get lots of visitors among those masses you refer to: you only have to pander to them enough.

Oh, and by the way, Alan Colmes is not a liberal — he’s an almost unknown entertainer they set up to be Hannity’s foil, as a pretense at their so-called “balance”. He throws bones, as you put it, to conservatives because that’s who writes his checks.

  24. RF – I don’t see any pandering going on; thinking critically doesn’t always mean disagreeing with what you read in the New York Times or wherever. The point of Rocketboom isn’t to look at all sides of everything. Rocketboom exists to look at Rocketboom’s side of things. This is the point of a blog. People read a blog because they are interested in its content, and people make a blog because they’re interested in presenting their point of view. Rocketboom isn’t looking to expand viewership for the sake of expanding, and that’s why people watch it; it feels genuine in a way that mass media will never be.

In addition, ALL of the examples you give after this first point is moot and not absolutely indicative of an expanding conservative movement. Want me to shoot down a few for you?

New York Times circulation is down, sure, but so are many other major newspapers due to internet news sources like Rocketboom. It’s not a barometer of political weather.

The amount of pro-life crisis pregnancy centers is a greater indicator of conservative organizations’ wealth rather than overall popularity.

Unemployment rate is not solely determined by fiscal policy (via the Bush administration), as any introductory macroeconomics course will tell you.

Afghanistan is a wreck; to this date it still has no real infrastructure or economy despite having girls in school. Exactly how much does Bush talk about this?

Saddam – wait, how many weapons of mass destruction did we find again?

You should go sit in a corner and think about why you enjoy watching Rocketboom.

  26. I’m a bit late to this thread, catching up on this week’s RB and am quite surprised by RF’s comments. Sure, they might be appropriate if you want to be patronizing to your local politician, but here? It just comes off as rude. Advice is often junk that is painted over and sold off for more than it’s worth. If just so happens that you’re so knowledgeable about expanding the viewership of RB, why not consider starting your own videoblog and call it Conservative Bones?

I don’t watch RB for unbiased news, hell, those are hard to find enough as it is in the mainstream media. When I tell my friends about RB, the first words out of my mouth aren’t “it’s unbiased reporting, you should watch it!” But more like, “It’s funny and quirky.”
