My name’s Ned and I’m a very old Republican. I have a Honda Civic hybrid and love it. I share Amanda’s loathing of SUV’s.
I am very conservative and also very green … not mutually exclusive! I think Amanda’s “Country Club Muffy” character is one of a scarce breed … redneck Democrats with their huge pickups are probably more typical of the
    “screw the environment” types.

Fantastic! My favorite casual Friday ever!

This ties in to one of your previous shows in which had a commercial at the end with a yellow Hummer driving while all these critical words popped up on the screen. That was great. Would make a good link for today’s show I think.

By the way… My personal answer to the oil prices: ride a Vespa. They’re fun, they’re easy, they’re cheap - way easy to find parking. And best of all, Amanda would look great riding it around!

But before everyone gets all jealous about what I pay at the pump, I just wanted to let you all know that even we Vespa riders have felt the recent gas price hike too… When I first bought my Vespa, it took $4 to fill it up. Now, it’s like $6 !!!! My God! This is insane!

    Anyway… great show today.

  6. Drew and Amanda,

It’s not about Saving the the Environment, it’s about Saving the Environment So It’s Habitable for Humans. No one’s campaigning for Save the Environment of Mars, because nobody lives there. Once folks realize it’s about saving our own asses (and the asses of their SUV spawn) maybe some action will be taken.

    Thanks for the ride, Rocketboom.

  12. I’m a Republican and about as conservative as they come. I found the skit funny until the “I’m a Young Republican” comment. I actually know more Democrats with SUVs than Republicans. The rich snobbish caricature can be applied to the Hollywood and Mass liberal types much more easily than a typical Republican. I don’t know one Republican that even resembles the character Amanda portrayed. But I know 2 Democrats that come close to that caricature.

    Cheers!

  14. Well, at least a tasteful use of Amanda’s talents this time. Right on target too, up till the very end. I have about an equal number of liberal and conservative friends and if anything the liberals drive bigger cars and seem to go out of their way to put as many miles on those cars as possible: Two people own 5 cars, 4 of which guzzle gas, live on one side of DC and work on the other (50 mile commute) take weekend drives to Vermont. Sound like Republicans?

Having worked in Washington for more years that you two have been on earth I’ve seen waste fraud and abuse up close and personal. If it were as simple as Dems vs. Republicans we would have fixed the world long ago.

Blaming all that is wrong on Republicans (and by inference assuming the Democrats will fix everything) is like blacks anticipating that Jesse Jackson will end racism (when it is in fact his business).

The Democrats controlled 2 out of 3 of the Presidency, the House, the Senate from roughly 1950 to 2000. Do you REALLY think that things were just hunky dory for those 50 years?

Why don’t you get Amanda to go interview Walter Cronkite and ask him why he doesn’t want windmills visible from his nice beach home? He’s in your neighborhood you know? I would love to see working windmills off my coast reducing my electric bill, but I’m a Republican, in a Democratic state. Go figure.

I hope you will turn your talent to solving problems and escape the monoculture you find yourselves in. The world does not look like Manhattan.

    MacBeach,

I read your comment, and although coherent, it seems a bit off to me, and I don’t care how you’ve been working in D.C.

I attribute high gas prices with many of Bush’s foreign policies. Far from preventing a cartelization of Persian Gulf oil producers, the Bush-Baker war (OUR CURRENT WAR) resulted in precisely that!

The reason comes down to the great taboo topic of the current oil mess: the sanctions against Iraq. The Bush administration claimed its war came down to keeping the oil pumping for you and for me. Then, in total contradiction in a policy driven by spite, the US prevented Iraq from selling oil. Why? The official reason was that Iraq, now reduced to rubble, was manufacturing chemical weapons. However, not a scrap of proof of that contention was ever turned up by UN investigators. And yet the sanctions remain.

Although I agree that Democratic rule in the latter half on last century wasn’t exactly “The BEST for America”, I can’t see how it has gotten any better with Bush and the Republicans in control.

    I.M.O. Vote Libertarian.

  19. Attention Earthlings!
I do not know if I would categorize myself as Dem. or Rep., being a Martian I am not sure if it is legal for me to even vote on your planet of inferior republicans.

One thing I have observed from my low-earth orbit outpost is that Bush does not ride an SUV, but a horse creature at a place called Crawford Ranch, this “horse” produces an excrement “dung” that is high in methane, I believe this will be the Earth energy of the future, since the Earth is full of dung, especially in Texas (Republicans tend to produce copious amounts). So hopefully Earth will not have to experience the unfortunate events that have befallen our beloved planet Mars (a tear). We also have noted this Bush person tends to walk “proud” no matter how idiotic or stupid he is portrayed or appears on Earth, we find this interesting, must study the poised shoulders and confident walk, he and his brother grew up together yet do not share the same “droll” accent, fascinating.

Second, we demand no more “put downs” of Mars or what has befallen our “red planet”, it was a series of unfortunate events at our central atmosphere processing unit, we believe caused by the incompetence of an Earthling by the name of Arnold Schwarzenegger, we have posters of him all over Mars, rumors have it he may be in California, U.S., Earth.

If negative comments by Earthings continue towards our planet (Mars) making us “very angry” (Marvin in particular), we will have to kidnap and take the Earthling by the name “Amanda” hostage (she is very popular here), and require her to dance madly to Russian tunes until a state of exhaustion! Such will be broadcast on your Earth Internet until Earth complies with our demands…we may even require her to dance with sandals if the negative comments about our beloved planet and home (Mars) are not stopped immediately!

    Transmission OUT,
    Marvin the Martian
Ambassador and Veteran Tour Guide of Mars

P.S.: this transmission has also been broadcast to your “united nations”

disclaimer: this post was strictly satire and possibly fictional.

so do i send this to jigsaw? he he
Amanda is dreamy delectable even to Martians. beep

what have you Earthlings done with our good friends the Coneheads?!

  20. Instead of thinking about hybrids, you need to think about the fact that you will be burning foreign oil regardless of hybrid or not. That’s why you should get a diesel, and run biodiesel in it. Here’s the basics:

    100% renewable (plant based)
    0% greenhouse gas
    Domestic (yay for farmers)
    NO FOREIGN OIL DEPENDENCY
    NO FOREIGN OIL DEPENDENCY
    NO FOREIGN OIL DEPENDENCY

  25. I blame the high gas prices on supply and demand. US demand has been growing consistently of course, but China’s demand has skyrocketed. Besides the recent Hurricane fiasco, it’s the WORLD demand that is driving it up, and there are bigger players than us needing an exponentially greater amount every year.

And I agree… the contant slamming of republican vs. democrat is so lame. It’s all a tool anyways… divide and conquer. As the events unfold(ed) the past few weeks, once again we Americans were fairly united against helping one another - and being extremey pissed off about the same things. Remember the divide and conquer concept. It’s better when we address the real issues and not get sucked into manfactured, dividing camps.

  31. This is a bit technical, but for the lowdown on solar power and how it compares to traditional methods of generating electricity and what’s going on in the industry as a whole try:

    http://www.solarbuzz.com

I work for a company that supplies the solar industry so I can tell you that this market is booming, especially in Germany (where the Green party rules and people are typically more earth-conscious) and Japan (because they are landlocked). Now, all we need is an administration change and who knows what this country is capable of… but that’s another story all together.

  32. Look, the prices of gas are the way they are because of what’s known as the Hubbert Peak.
Do a google search for it, really, right now. Guess what, he’s right.

It’s 12:01 right now; we’re already over the peak.

Oh, I know, go pick corn, right? Not gonna work either; you’ve got to expend an amount of work to pick that up, so in effect it’s a whole with which you want x = y; when y > x Just won’t happen.

See Amanda looks like Russian model, actually probably better looking!

Amanda (aka Queen Amidala) as co-owner of RocketBoom, has decided by proclamation in order to raise money to keep RocketBoom “booming”, one lucky contestant “winner” will be allowed to give her tired lovely tootsies a foot-massage, that is all! Now we know there are plenty of Bill and Teds out already anxious to send in their money, please do not overload the Server!!!

  37. I loved the Hummer vs. Hybrid VLOG. It’s tempting to point fingers at one or the other political party’s constituents as being more wasteful. But in a rural area (like where I live) we drive bigger vehicles because we haul more stuff as we run more errands in one trip, and over longer distances, or people are towing their horse/cattle trailers. But then again, a huge number of the tourists who come out here are driving the biggest, bad-ass RVs I’ve ever seen…and towing a vehicle. Talk about gas guzzlers! Thankfully they aren’t demanding valet parking.

Anyway, we people who want to actually get something accomplished need to find common ground, rather than fixate on third-rail issues like gay marriages, embryonic stem cells, ad nauseum, while big money pillages our country behind the scenes. How about that instead of GOP/Demo stuff?

I’m a middle aged republican (And proud of It.) and wish I was as rich as this VLOG makes us look.
I would like to know why the democrats didn’t push an energy bill to get gas stations to sell Gasohol (10% Ethanol), Biodiesel (also called rapsoil in Germany), LPG (Liquefied Petroleum gas), or Methane (Basically gas made from Poo). All of which are alternative fuels that are less damaging to the environment. Billy Boy Clinton had 8 years to do it. Maybe it is because the Democrats are only pretending to be social and are no better than the republicans when it comes to saving energy.
Also, not every person with a large car uses it just for fun. I have five children. I really wish somebody would sell a van that uses one of the alternate fuels I just mentioned. Even a hybrid Van would be nice

  51. Er, just a hint for those people who are offended that their party (led by oilmen who launched a new tax break on “farm vehicles” to encourage more SUV purchases) might be associated with people who can’t decide between a Hummer and a hybrid: Being Republican does not necessarily imply hatred for the environment and non-Americans in general, but voting for Bush the second time around more or less condemns you in the eyes of the world, so if you want to be taken seriously while still sticking up for your party, you should always mention that you didn’t vote for Bush in 04, or at the very least, if you did, that you now regret it. Otherwise people will assume you’re still proud to be in the same party with BushCo, and you end up looking kinda dumb, given recent history.
