  1. Drew,
About the ads and your approach to placing them - yes, but…

How about if Amanda says something like, “Take a look at the links below. They are a couple of ads we think you’ll be interested in. Let us know what you think.” Then have ads you actually think we’d be interested in, like the Flickr ad.

If you guys are good at picking out interesting ads, people will know over time that it’s probably going to be a good idea to click. You get lots of hits on the ads and we get ads that are interesting.

So how do you know what’s interesting? Well, how do you know what is “newsworthy”? You seem to have the knack.

  3. Drew and Amanda, that was bad form showing Graffiti as an interesting and harmless activity. As a New Yorker (UWS’er), I have enjoyed watching NYC blossom into the clean, safe, world class city that it is. Not to mention one hell of a fun place to live and enjoy all different types of people and view points. But putting up a video of an idiot defacing someone’s property like that, most likely a business owner that will need to spend hours and pay $200 to $300 to paint over the graffiti, is way out of line and not in the human spirit of your vlog. It’s almost as bad as Paris Hilton and her Cachochou (spelling), Baby Luv, that she has stolen away from the little guys home in Central America so she can be amused for a month. I hope that animal rips the eyes out of her skull!

Anyhoo, you guys are awesome and I love RB. Just wanted to give you my 2 cents.

    Cheers!

  4. Drew, you wrote/my response..

“I think value vs. loss of value with street art is often a subjective argument.”

Are you @&#&ing kidding me! Do you think anyone in that neighborhood wants to look at that garbage? What about the owner of the property? How would you like it if someone spray painted your car and justified it as “street art”. It’s not like it will just go away with time. The only way it will go away is with effort and money. That idiot was ruining someone’s property and the community spirit of the neighborhood. Notice how the graffiti vandal runs away at the end of the clip, a clear indication they didn’t have permission or were not the owners of the metal door. Let me tell you something, if I was the owner and caught someone doing that to my property, they would have hell to pay. I would meat out some major physical voilence. I don’t mean to be so extreme, I’m normally a peace loving kind of guy, but this video really gets under my skin. I had no idea you two were so radical. Amanda, tell me you agree with me, please! I normally appreciate your liberal slant, but you have gone way overboard on this one. Why not show someone throwing a brick into a shop owners window and present it as just another fun hipster activity that is entertaining. I will continue to watch RB, but I respectfully and strongly disagree with your decision to show this video and present it in such a light hearted way, when all it really is is someone being completely disrespectful to the person who owns the property and the people in the neighborhood that are now subjected to this persons crime.

  5. Hey, just to let you know, I called that phoneswarm number the other day and talked to some strange man for 10 minutes. He said he was walking somewhere and I think he wanted a ride. Since I live in Ohio I wasn’t able to make the trip to help him out. Plus, I think he was a sex offender anyway. It was strange but interesting none the less.

Is Rocketboom a black OPs project? Or a corporate experiment in drilling our brains full of advertising holi-ness?

…a working prototype for how to apply advertising in a non-invasive way

Are we your “focus group”? Hey, I don’t mind watching a cute, funny or off-the-wall ad. Like you said, you’ve had quite a few and some are hilarious. I’ve enjoyed them immensely….

But your response, saying you’re a “working prototype” was a bit disconcerting. Was it just a poor choice of words or are we Rocketboomers guinea pigs for new ways to market product.

    RFIF tags, chip implants…now RB?

Say it ain’t so Joe (Drew)

All advertising is invasive. Showing it as just another fun segment on your daily show is acceptable within the context of what Rocketboom represents. But to say RB is a prototype to sell us stuff without “being invasive” is reprehensible.

Did you actually mean what you wrote… I’ve been a BIG FAN until I read that tiny paragrapgh

  9. RICK:

I totally agree with you. I enjoy watching fun ads too! I have no problem with the way the ads are presented on RB.

If you re-read my post, it’s the 3rd paragraph of Drew’s post I took issue with. It’s what he wrote. Read it carefully!

I LOVE CRAZY ADS… but I don’t want anyone figuring out new non-invasive ways that can become commercially viable…might as well put a chip implant in my medulla oblongata.

No it’s not “Inna oblongata da vida!!!”

    Cheers!

    Re-read my post Rick.

    Thanks

  12. I just recently started watching rocket boom last week. Good stuff, then you mentioned something about a payphone near Fresno for people to call… I live in Fresno but Interstate five is like an hour away! And the number is not listed with 411. So… I am thinking about maybe running up and down the interstate till I find the phone and camping out there just to pick up the phone and harass people calling it just for kicks and giggles, what say you? ^_^

  13. Hey Drew, you and Amanda do a kick-ass job. Why do you think I keep coming back for more each day?
You’ve got me by my proverbial “crazy balls”!

From the beginning I asked myself how do these guys earn a living? It’s a full time job. I listened to your audio comments. I agree with most of what you said. No product placements. No ordinary advertising. etc.

I enjoy the ads at the end. If you get paid for them all the better, I hope you guys make a mint. The spots are all cool and interesting so it blends in with the show. Which is why I mentioned “context.” Context is an important term most people overlook.

You could set a trend where advertisers will bend over backwards to produce the coolest, most artistic ads just to be on Rocketboom.
Whatever you’ve put on has been cool non-conformist advertising. And yes, I’m sure most of us watch it.

I remember when movies began product placement. There was a coke can on an office desk or a 2 sec glimpse of a Nike logo. Then it spun out of control. By the time the third “Back to The Future ” sequel came out the first 10 minutes featured 15 corporate logos. Everyone in the theatre laughed then, (1985-1987) now everyone’s pissed.

Hey as your popularity increases as it seems to be doing, more advertisers will come to you. You can dictate the rules, cause your VLOG RULES.

I like your code of ethics on what you will or will not accept. The ads have been a non-issue for me, until you said non-invasive. Even net advertising 10 years ago was considered “non-invasive”, now look at it.

If a cool, funky ad at the end pays the bills, I’m cool with that. I guess I cringed at your explanation because most of today’s advertising is very invasive and insidious. And most of it sucks BIG TIME.

I’ve got another idea, if you want to email me privately. It’s a fun RocketBoom sort of idea to generate $cash!!!

Wish you guys all the best. Make millions.

Here’s a million dollar idea. (Just thought of it) One day have Donald Trump take Amanda’s place and mimic her news reporting style. (one day only)

However, here’s the kicker, charge him a cool MILLION for the privilege. It would be a hoot. :) :) :)

I really didn’t want to rant or vent, cause I LOVE WHAT YOU TWO GUYS ARE DOING.

HAIL VLOGONIA! HAIL ROCKETBOOM! HAIL AMANDA!

    Thanks Drew for responding.

    Drew and evereyone,

    about this ‘ads’ discussion:
for me, someone who is not able to look at a funny video showing the name of a product (or company) at the end, and unable to enjoy this video without linking this experience to the company is already lost.

If you buy stuff because you laughed looking at an ad, then don’t blame nothing but yourself (or your parents, your environment, your country, whatever). Instead of discussing eternally about if the ad should be there or not, should be at the end or not, should be annouced by Amanda or not, blablabla … think about your way of delaing with the information provided to you.

Let sane people enjoying life through all its facets.
And let RB feeding them with interesting/funny/strange … stuff.

If you’re too formated to be unable to deal with an ad, Amanda and Drew have an excellent website with crazy blue balls for you ;)

  18. Drew: have to agree with ChrisNYC on this one. Persons are not entitled to occupy, with paint or otherwise, the property others are working/sweating to pay taxes on. Really cheap shot to mess up someone’s else’s stuff and call it “art”.

  19. Great to see at least one *news(ish)* type channel in the US reporting some of the dark past of Dopey Don Rumsfeld. We’ve had the painful pleasure(?) of his company here in Adelaide, Australia this week. We arranged a suitable *welcoming* party you’ll be glad to hear! Bye don, don’t come back anytime soon.

  22. The argument over the the SUV/graffiti thing was a bit over-analytical on both sides, don’t you think?

The toy truck story was weak, and didn’t make much sense. The concept of monster trucks is way different than the concept of SUV’s IMO. But regardless, it was just a weak story. Oh well, they can’t all be good.

The graffiti thing was cool though. “Oh noes! Don’t promote graffiti because it’s so mean!!” Whatever, that’s why it’s illegal, and yeah it sucks if someone paints some crap on your building. That’s part of the appeal, it’s not all nicey nicey and you can get in trouble for it. And some of it looks awesome.

  24. Drew must be on crack if he thinks vandalism is art. When there are limitless ways to express yourself legally choosing property crime as “self expression” makes you a criminal, not an artist. Does smashing the store windows and looting it make you an artist as well Drew?
