  1. Wonder what took you so long?

Good point about sony drm software. Having a Mac means never having to say sorry about one company’s copyright protection scheme to thwart music pirates. Hmm, should I or shouldn’t I call that #? Maybe Ford should support RSS 2.0. What an idea.

OMG, blue ball tragedy. hahaha!!!! Keep up the good work.

  3. The first question that came to mind watching the Dutch TV piece was: ‘do they really rehang the map every day?’

The second was ‘hey, shouldn’t they have a union grip to do that?’

  4. Here’s an even easier way to avoid DRM: play your CD on a CD player.

sad .. very sad … but crazy … so crazy … those blue balls … I keep watching them all the time … it’s amazing but in a way relaxing too …

(ok ok, another great comment from Ron … yes, I know … but I wanted to [very] modestly show you, Amanda and Andrew, that you count in my everyday life, as for tens of thousands of people(if we include our new Dutch friends))

    Sweet dreams

  6. As usual, well worth the wait.

So, any chance of getting RB tee’s in black?(I’m a stage tech, it’s all I wear) :-)

I love Rocketboom more today than yesterday, but not as much as tomorrow!!

  7. I was wondering the same thing about the map! Every time I see a news story about Rocketboom, there they are…, Andrew and Amanda hanging the map - blue painters tape and all.

  8. Oh no! It’s back to Dr. Crazy Balls!
I had a feeling you would pull that stunt. Well, each rehab session costs me $175 multiplied by Danny Elfman salary over the last 10 years divided by the square root of 1 million blue balls ( on an avg day in America) =

You owe me a Rocketboom coffee mug!

la la la la la la la la la la la la la la duh!

Please give us 30 frames per second 640×480 video…15 frames per second video makes lines appear on your face. Thanks.

  11. Is it just me, or is anyone else having trouble with the Blue Balls tragedy? Perhaps trouble isn’t the correct word, but it snaps over to Enya music and some dude’s kids and wedding pictures and then back to the tragedy and then back to Enya… how strange. How very strange…

  16. It appears that Sony’s DRM DOES affect the Mac -:

    http://www.security.ithub.com/article/Sonys+DRM+Rootkit+Comes+in+Mac+Flavor+Too/165172_1.aspx

Sorry Amanda, it’s not just the poor unfortunate Windows users that are getting hammered by the large corporation.

Of course, all those Windows users can avoid the DRM issue by running their PC under a low privileged user account (LUA): http://robgarrett.com/blogs/software/archive/2005/11/10/1700.aspx

  17. There is a way around the Sony drm security issue. It takes a little time and patience. But if you want to keep the mp3 for yourself to upload on your iPod or burn a CD it works.
BTW good going on RB making it on the news in the Netherlands. I really hope RB’s popularity doesn’t turn it from what it started out as…..simple and entertaining. Keep up the good work.

  18. what with below?

Looking to capitalize on its New Media momentum, Apple buys video blog Rocketboom, with the idea of turning it into a 24-hour online video entertainment/liberal-news/retro-commercials/ Japanese-animation network. Fox beats Apple to the punch with the launch of “Foxy.tv.”

As was said, it does affect the Mac to, but at least in the Mac’s case, you kind of have to wonder why putting in a CD asks you for admin privs… and you can opt not to give them.

  20. I saw RTL4 Dutch news item on RocketDump on the Big Screen of our gym. Too funny!

Amanda, they’re not saying “Things Have Changed”, they’re saying, ‘RocketBoom will revolutionize The Netherlands’

PS: “how expensive this call-phone thing is from the Netherlands. Nobody picked up yet.” Oh yes we have: Teledump. Dial 0900 1919, then normal intnl number 00-1-209-364-9392 (then #). Local Dutch rate :-)

  23. Love the blue balls - they are loud, but the more I see the more I want them - blue balls that is. I have to assume that the TV crews just love to show you folks hanging up the map. It’s like, “hey nobody’s ever shown this before!”

  25. OK - I give up. I follow the links to the Blue Ball Machine page and — nothing happens. Either at work or at home. Assume I’m missing some piece of software I should have to watch this thing?

  32. Sorry, Rob, but the software that is installed on OSX (only after clicking the “Enhanced CD” partition of the CD) is neither of the same variety or as dangerous to the system as what is the rootkit software, which REQUIRED a Windows user to install it on their PC in order to play the CD.

Rootkit cloaks itself. The OSX version is not cloaked. Sony does not say what it does, precisely, which IS wrong, but from all accounts, it does not open any backdoors for hackers. Rather, it limits the number of times you can burn tracks, and even how long those burns will be useable.

Removing Rootkit from Windows manually has ruined the functionality of CD and DVD drives. Removing the components of OSX manually causes no harm.

Also, if you are on a Mac, and you do click on the “enhanced” partition of the CD, you are told that an application is being installed and an administrator password is required. On a Windows machine, you are not nearly so well protected.

So in essence, you are 100% correct that Sony Corp is being an A-Hole and being horrible to it’s users, but you are only 10% correct (prorated against maliciousness of the software bundles for both OS’) in saying that the Mac is affected in the same way as Windows.
