  1. Hi!

    You gotta love citizen journalism.

The “non protester” in the video is my friend, Pete Lowney of Valdez, Alaska.

He is a great guy who is an inspiration to me. Not only for being an excellent backcountry snowboard, crab fisherman, and ice climber, but for speaking his mind and responding appropriately in this dangerous time for the citizens of the United States.

I can’t say that I have the courage to do what he does, so naturally.

I’ve written something and collected some material on Pete at this page

Great job Pete and thank you Rocketboom!

  3. The thing is, and this is from the point of view of someone not in the Army but in an environment closely connected with the armed forces, when you sign up for the Army (or whatever Armed Force) you know what we are signing up for.

You have a job to do, you are paid to go wherever you’re sent and to execute the orders that you are given.

Sometimes the execution of those orders may leave a bitter taste in your mouth, at the end of the day though you made a choice.

Please don’t think I’m trying to disrespect you here. I’m immenseley proud of all the troops from the British and American armed forces, they do a difficult job under extreme conditions. They are the best in the world at what they do and I respect them for that.

  4. to Raistlin,

So you would tell a 19 year old soldier to shallow the bitter taste and follow an unlawful order in an unlawful war. Tell them that’s what they signed up for. That’s how we show our respect?

I think the best way to respect our troops is to elect leaders who respect them. Who actually served in Uniform. Who wouldn’t deploy them all over the world on unclear motivations and with hardly the support needed and with undeveloped plan.

And is it out of respect for our troops that Bush grandstanded on that aircraft carrier - “Mission Accomplished” … end of the war?

I don’t mean to get mad. But I am. Not at you,Raistlin. I felt like you at one point. I hope that you think clearly about the subject. I don’t hope to change your mind… only to provide an alternative way to “respect our troops”.

  5. Objective reporting at it’s finest.

Why don’t you guys move to Canada?

  6. Hi James,
    The report wasn’t objective.

The way I look at it, no reports are.

Everyone brings their own bias to their reporting.

We’re providing an alternative to mainstream reporting here.

If we have a point of view, we’ll show it.

Why lead the report with the Army discussing their birthday party?

Why not lead with the view of a protester?

If mainstream media reported on the event with an opening shot of an Army representative, talking about the proud history of Army, would that then be biased towards the Army?

Maybe we need a split screen, with one point of view on the right, and one point of view on the left. You could click your mouse on the point of view you agree with and ignore the other side. We have the technology.

AS to the question of why we all don’t move to Canada, the last time I checked we still had free speech here. So I’m staying.

  7. I don’t care that you have a point of view. What I care about is that you represent that point of view, and only that point of view ONLY, in your story.

An objective report would represent each side equally.

Reporters are human. They have opinions. Their opinion should dictate what stories they cover but not how those stories are told. Each side of the story should get equal billing.

Otherwise it’s propaganda… which is EXACTLY what this story is.

  8. I basically just started at one point of the Cambridge Common and then made my way around in a circle, taping whoever I came across.

I didn’t even edit it together in a different sequence than what actually happened.

I guess you could say that the report reflected what I encountered.

There were more vocal protesters than there were birthday celebrators.

And I think my report showed that.

So if a ‘professional’ journalist came in and did a report, they’d be doing a two sides of the story report, maybe giving equal time to each side, which wouldn’t accurately depict what was going on.

    I hope more people comment.

  9. This report gives the protestor a soap box about Bush and the war. It asks the vets what years they represent. Equal billing? I think not.

And Amanda’s little heart felt ponder of the Army’s birthday at the end of the report?!

You can call my position bullshit. But it doesn’t change the fact that this was a story propagating the reporters and Rocketbooms position of the war. It was not about the Army’s birthday.

And just turning your camera on and walking around is not reporting by the way. You must work to do a balanced report. Find key people to interview. If you ask one side if the war is moral, ask the other side the same question.

I don’t expect you home grown “journalists” to understand what I’m saying.

It’s your opinion that the traditional media are the bad guys because they are biased and evil. I say look no farther than your own damn standard less work, and take the log out of your own eye before removing the splinter out of mine.

“Pete from Alaska” acts just exactly like a cop or some form of plant in our local movement… he causes trouble and states big brave **** wherever he goes. If hes not an agent, why did we observe him speaking to them during the day, then hauled across stage but Not arrested when others nearby were?

Activists Remember: when someone new to your community sounds funny and is shifty about where they come from and who they are, yet always goes high profile and yells a lot, Use your head and ask questions. (Perhaps they are crazy like a fox)

Others: please dont think one stranger represents the protesting people of Cambridge Ma.

I went to this event because I have an interest in history. It is important to know what time you are living in, and how to see the signs as the age shifts.

I saw the sorrow in the eyes of the old Vietnam Vet who was representing WW2 in the historical display around the edge of the field.

The most interesting people there were the Black families who were actually decendants of Revolutionary War-era Black fighters, and knew their history.

Why were children some of the only people there?
Teachers told us that local school children were brought to the Common because they were told that they were going to be observing a Civil War reenactment - but this did not happen. And its hard to say what they might have learned about the 1800’s, while being distracted by modern paratroopers dropping from said blackhawk, & Humvee photo-ops.

Where will photos of these children appear, and When was thair parents permission obtained for this political fieldtrip with the good cops?

Many good people of Cambridge are angry at the Mayor, the Army, and the Police for allowing this use of our children.

If we took your children _without your permission_ out of school into a commune or off to a Peace rally, would you be upset? Please, think about it.

  11. I am amazed by this vlog. Thank you Steve, Amanda and Drew for your work in putting this togeather. Clearly your independent or naieve for covering raw un-spun anti war material in America durring war.

Steve definitaly captured some good material in his film by of the event.

I turned out for this because I understand the role of propaganda and psycological operations in perpetuating violent systems of injustice world wide. I also understand my role as an american in the development of social Injustice.

I think Americans whole mental and social culture have been corrupted by the lies and murders commited in its invasions, occupations and global profiterring .

This event was designed to manufacture the appearence of public consent for occupation. They were sucessful in producing that illusion with thier media product but to most anyone there it was obviously a sham.

Propaganda isnt designed to fool critical thinkers its just to give moral cowards an excuse not to speak up or oppose them. First they censor the realitys of the invasion then they replace it with a narrative that justifies tresspassing, murder, and theft as deserved, defensive (life saving), or provoked.

Media tells us that the people we are oppressing are ethicialy, morally, emotionally inferior to us especially if they resist.

well thanks again for your great work and for not spinning us dizzy.

PS: Generating rumors about an activist being a cop is called snitch jacketing. Not getting arrested for asking dangerous questions in a tone that is disturbing the war is called…
    clever, as a fox

  12. “I don’t expect you home grown “journalists” to understand what I’m saying.” ???
James this is a really insulting (and cheap.. and unintelligent) comment.. you’ve done a journalism course so you are now the authority and your points are oh so highbrow that us mere citizens can’t understand them? give us (and rBoom, and Steve) a break.

i’m not rocketbooms biggest fan.. but i stand by them on this one.. steve’s right, all journalism is subjective.. rocketboom have never pretended to be anything else.. they do what they do, they hide nothing about their motives or beliefs.. and we should respect that.
