Why present one side of the strike debate without your typical dry wit? In one corner, we have a $1b surplus. In the other we have unskilled workers who are paid more than almost any other unskilled worker and want a slary increase that’s unheard of. Unlike the rest of the country they want to contribute nothing to their significant health care benefits, pension benefits and, on top of all that, they want to be less accountable for the quality of their work. Maybe that explains why the city and state are lambasting them and their national union body has given their chapter a vote of no-confidence.
(in Amanda voice) Maybe a _tiny_ bit of research would change everyone’s perspective on this union’s action.

SHOCKING! LOUD! Can you please, please FADE IN THE MUSIC at the beginning!? I listen at work, and sometimes my speakers are turned up so I can hear other things. Starting Rocketboom with speakers at even a normal level can be LOUD AND SHOCKING!

Wow, what a surprise, RB is siding with the Transit Union. Here’s why I don’t. They do make good money ($47,000 - $55,000 before OT,) they rejected a 10.5% pay increase, and they get a pension at 55!! Fifty effing Five! And they’re striking illegally.
Is the MTA a corrupt organization? Probably, but since they’re projecting a half billion dollar deficit in 2 years, that surplus doesn’t really exist.
The union is holding all New Yorkers hostage and costing people who make less money than they do to suffer. But why would RB care about those people they’re not doing anything radical?
Plus, the Union is going to lose whatever they gain from this contract in fines, basically screwing themselves for the next three years. Good work union! And good work RB for supporting them. Your blind support of “alternative” causes lives on. You go you hipsters, you go. Down with the man, man!
Oh, and they sell Tivo at Wal-Mart, why don’t you run a story about that. Amanda can use her “serious” tone and talk about the evils of Wal-Mart and all they sell. Way to stick by your beliefs.
:( Us people without tivo will just have to Pull out our video cables to watch you on the big screen lol… Sadly my desktop computer is still F* broken, so I won’t be able to do that. This horrid Solo 5300 from gateway doesn’t even have the right ports.(For the cables I have)
I moved to NYC at the end of 2001 and with all the greatness that is everywhere, the worst, for me - still here - is the overwhleming noise and filth.
The Subway is the noisiest and constantly, unreasonably-loud place to be and the dirt and waste that is there is alive and oosing, from a century of rat populations very present in every station.
The city streets are so loud and dangerous, the slightest flaw by mechanical or operator error becomes a life of tragedy for many.
The people who work in these kinds of conditions ought to get a lot more then they are asking for, IMO.
Or we could just continue to automate lines like the L and 6 trains and put more than half of these workers on the street. Then we can wish them luck in finding a job that rewards such generous pension, salary, and health benefits ever again.
Maybe they can hangout with the air traffic controlers.

I am concerned about that so-called “fast talker” however. I thing this is a misnomer. He was more like a “talker who takes too many breaths while speaking” but otherwise wasn’t talking all that fast. I’ve heard plenty of 14 year old girls talking on their cell phones talk faster than that.
Thanks for the NYC transit strike coverage. But is it *really* a strike, or is it a way to avoid certain potential security breach issues during the holiday season? Hmmmm….do I smell “Conspiracy”??

When I first had a quick preview of your show, I thought, “hey that looks pretty grouse!” and I can safely say that your show has not let me down. I’m an Aussie, so hearing what is going on in America is very interesting. Amanda, mate, you’re such a great host, you make everything so fun to watch, none of that boring stuff we get here on the news. I have a good ol’ laugh at the little clips you occasionally show at the end of your shows, like the “Tell your kids the truth about Santa” one. Crikey, it was grouse! It was great to watch RB on my Tivo. I was surprised to see that the copy protection flag is set to prevent copying rocketboom to a DVD, VCR or other device (press info to find this screen). What’s up with that?
