Agree with MattO: I never heard about Firefox, and if you are not a computer geek, or if you are not surrounded by people who know about that (like the majority of internet users) … well, you use Internet Explorer.

Thanks for the news RB. I will try it.

btw: however, I learned somewhat quickly how to change my homepage and not land on msn webpage :) My case is not desperate I guess …

The thing I love about this report is how many people who obviously would have rushed past and ignored Amanda stopped to answer the question about a browser. (Firefox myself here. Love the tabbed browsing)

  4. I tried Firefox on my last computer, and it worked great except it wouldn’t let me make a second account for my wife. I can find my way around new programs pretty well, but she’s not that good at it, so I have to keep things relatively simple. I may try it again soon, though, now that more sites support it.

he he … installed firefox … far better than IE indeed …

I just find one drawback in my long firefox experience of 32 minutes: when I want to write an email with my hotmail account, my Favorites Contacts box is just a mess … I’ll still use IE for hotmail thus … unless someone knows how to fix that ??

  11. I find it interesting that people have trouble explaining exactly _why_ they like firefox better. Tabbed browsing, feature, okay.. More secure, relatively, okay..

I think the biggest thing I like about Firefox more is the consistency of the application. It feels to me that everything works like it _should_. Managing bookmarks in IE is quite painful. The extensions are quite nice, also.

Okay, I’m just as guilty, listing features. And my family uses it because I told them to, also. :)

  19. The irony here is that all of the exploits found in IE only make it a BETTER BROWSER. This might not be apparent right now but if FireFox started pulling in 40-50% market share, you would see how many holes the hacker community can find in that browser.

This isn’t an IE/Firefox issue. I guarantee that both dev teams release exploitable browsers but until FF’s market share goes up, it wont get hacked.

BTW: You should go ask that question at the MS campus in redmond because it’s the equivalent to asking the same question at a university in favor of firefox.

I always love to see “regular” people using Open Source Software. I don’t care if the that survey is exact or accurate. Every single person that uses some Open Source Software makes me happy. This may sound stupid, but that’s just the way I feel about it.

I can remember the time when non-nerdy people would respond to the question “Do you use Mozilla or IE?” with “What the hell is Mozilla?” .

Stuff like your vlog remembers me to the fact that the time I spend on OSS foo is not wasted.

  50. I use Safari. Firefox would be my close second choice.

As far as my love affair with Safari… I like all the Mac intergration, the interface, RSS support, customization and the overall speed and compatibility.
Internet Explorer is all boated, ugly and has all sorts of preferences that simply exist to annoy and interrupt your workflow (just like MS Office). Did I mention that Microsoft recently changed Explorer so that if you load the default webpage of http://www.msn.com, Explorer crashes on Mac? Real quality, Mr. Gates. Bravo.
Tabbed browsing is not really a big deal, but for the record, it’s been on Safari since day one!
Also, everyone kept talking about safety. Huh? I’ve been online for over a decade and internet safety never has entered my mind. Must be a New York terrorist fear thing. Or perhaps a PC virus user fear thing. Whatever. It must be rough to know deep down that you paid to have all that hassle and fear. It’s like paying $300 for sex with a frigid AIDS whore with a yeast infection. Have fun suckers.

The best thing about Safari, Firefox, and Opera….? It’s the added psychological benefit of knowing you’re not giving money to a corporation almost as evil as Wal-Mart.

    There’s my two one-hundredths of a dollar.

Feel free to disagree, but I have my fingers in my ears and can’t hear you - la la la la la la…

  57. Here’s a new reason to prefer Firefox: Microsoft is a convicted criminal.

After the conviction, MS donated lots of money to the Bush Campaign in its (correct) belief that Bush would make a generous settlement during the penalty phase of the trial. Noone knows how the 2000 election would have turned out had MS not gotten involved, but I doubt that Bill Gates and Paul Allen believed that Bush would make a better president than Gore. MS donated the money purely to end the browser wars. Now we’ve got a real war. Sleep well, Bill.

I’d be interested to see how many Mac users prefer FF to Safari though, I’d imagine it’s low - if only for the lack of default contextual (right click) functions, such as “Search in Google”, “Search Spelling”, “Search Dictionary” - which are fast and friendly in Safari, but buggy additions in FireFox.

  60. I’d be curious about the outtakes, too. Anyone say “Safari”?

I use Safari for my day-to-day stuff and Firefox for my vloggy activities because it’s compatible with my posting editor while Safari is not. I haven’t made the full switch because it doesn’t seem to want to import all my bookmarks, and it launches really slowly. But I looooves me Firefox extensions!

And before we all geek out over the love for Firefox out there (oh, wait, too late!) let’s remember that this was shot in a super-hip, super-young, super-knowlegable neighborhood in the middle of a college campus. Do it again someplace else and watch the tide turn dramatically.

That being said, I’m out of here like a fox on fire.

  65. IE6 is almost five years old so I don’t think it’s surprising that better browser’s have come along in that time. What does surprise me though is that firefox has only been able to grab 9% of the market despite all the negative propaganda that is constantly slung at IE. I think this proves that most people just don’t care that much, they just want something that will allow them to view pages on the web, it doesn’t matter if that browser is IE, firefox, opera, safari or whatever it’s just not important enough for them to change.

I know a lot of people believe firefox is more secure, but if you compare the number of security vulnerabilities discovered in both browsers over the last 12 months you will notice their are just has many vulnerabilities with firefox, even though it has a much smaller share of the market. The difference is firefox vulnerabilities don’t make the headlines they are just conveniently brushed under the carpet. Microsoft have improved IEs security a lot over the last couple of years, but while it has such a large chunk of the browser market it’s always going to be the main target for things like spyware.

Personally I use firefox as my main browser simply because of the tabs and extensions, but that’s about it, overall I don’t think it’s that much better just more up-to-date. It’s not going to take that much for microsoft to get back many of the people who decided to switch to alternative browsers. Next year when IE7 ships with vista I think mozilla are going to have a lot of problems, not only attracting new users but also keeping their existing ones. They are going to have to either come up with some amazing killer feature\s or pull off the mother of all propaganda campaigns, or be left with just the M$ SUX! crew.

On the computers I’ve set up for my family, I’ve had to rename the Firefox shortcut to “Internet”, just so people would stop sitting down and asking me “how do I get online?”. People have no clude what Firefox is, just by the name or icon. That’s one beef I’ve come to have towards its marketing.

Naturally though, I’m a Firefox user.

  69. The difference is, Firefox is being made by a HUGE community of coders that want a better product. IE is made by a bunch of people that have been making IE for years and years, they knokw they have and 85%+ market share and don’t really care if they bring in new people. They are just trying to get by and not piss off too many people. They are failing.

I have been using firefox for about 5 months, aside from the very first pdf I tried to view, it has not crashed once.
Those people didn’t say anything about RSS or the fact that I’ve never seen a popup on FF. Never had a dialer try to install.

Now as soon as people realize their are other operating systems besides windows…..

After using Unix in the navy, I haven’t been without at least 1 linux box in the house in 8 years. If it weren’t for windows only programs, Microsoft would not exist in my house.

  71. Question: did ANYONE have a good answer for Internet Explorer? Or at least an answer that wasn’t “becaue I don’t know what I’m doing.”

    I’m a Safari user.

  72. Interesting that so many of the people who posted on this item questioned the omission of Opera, which is my favorite browser, too. It has most of the features that set Firefox apart from the dreaded IE, and many others besides.

So here’s a challenge to Amanda and the Rockettes: How about a segment on Opera? You could set it to the Duet from the Pearl Fishers with Jussi Björling and Robert Merrill!

  73. Opera?!? Ew. They only jumped on the free browser bandwagon recently because they weren’t able to get anyone to pay for that thing. In my opinion, they blew their opportunity years ago.

As for those that think IE users did not have a good answer, please remember not everyone is a sysadmin or poweruser, so they don’t understand the issues. Talk to them on their level instead of making fun: “J00r Bank Account will get P0wnDD gramma!!”

  74. Did someone just complain about not including Lynx? Haha, c’mon now.

I’m glad Firefox has a pretty good following these days, but your survey was kind of loaded. How much footage did you edit out of people walking by and not answering your question? Those were probably IE users.

I use Firefox for work-related stuff because of the great web developer extensions. Otherwise, I use Shiira (http://hmdt-web.net/shiira/en), this open source browser based on Safari. Honestly, the only reason I use it is because I like the cool page-turn animation you get when going to a new page. Superficial, I know. Haha.

RB: there are some Casual Fridays that are very successfull … this is one of them … just satuday afternoon, and already 102 comments !!! soon you will have more comments about Firefox that for Chad Chesterfield and Co.

If you don’t get paid for this ‘advertising’, anyway you will be able to use those comments in the future to prove ad companies that you must have a place in their campaigns.

A little bit more than 24h of Firefox experience, and no problem til now.

ps: those posts give you a great idea of what’s you audience looks like. Many computer pro [I'm not]… maybe that’s why a foot paddling child or German songs are not that successful …

If you’d ask me, why Firefox, my answer would be. Mouse gestures and tabs. Some people mentioned tabs, but mouse gestures are just as important in delivering a speedy web experience.

If you’re using Firefox and have not checked out mouse gestures, then try that today.

    Amanda:

in a way, you’re right: comments are not a good measure of success: some topics are controversial, others not. It doesn’t mean some are found interesting and some not … and doesn’t mean some are more appreciated than others.

Also, I’m curious to know if you keep track of the number of connexions to your website .. well, I already know the answer (from your coverage in live from your internet hosting company)… but I don’t know the numbers ;) Have you experienced a significant (R)boom after the Dutch TV spot?

Thanks for the previous correction. Have a good Sunday you and Drew.

  87. Amazing that no one mentioned extensions. That’s my number one reason.

Barebones to barebones Opera kicks Firefox ass.

But who surfs barebones? Therefore the Fox rules.

thing about this video: As often happens when consumers get put on the spot by an interviewer, they just say what they think they should say.

you can tell some of the people who say firefox really don’t have an idea of why they prefer it - faster? my dad said I’d get less viruses?

It’s interesting the way that just word of mouth and buzz have generated a real brand for firefox, just like people generally thinking volvos are safe, people think firefox = intelligent choice. I think a lot of people that use it (maybe a friend/family has switched them) won’t even be using the tabs and won’t notice any difference.

just for background, I am only moderately geeky and switched to Ffox a year ago. extensions like mouse gestures and sage are neat, tabs are now indispensible to me, and you get less pop-ups. But I can’t tell it’s faster, and it definitely crashes more often than IE!

  89. I use Opera browser for both scurity and speed over firefox. On the average Opera is about one version ahead of firefox as far as features go. I love the voice command and to have the browser read the pages for me. Together with dragon speak and opera who need a keyboard or mouse. The download is 376/kBs whick means I can get 100 mb files in 3 min … I’m happy. It also has rss, mail, and web all in one.
also it can play divx files

Opera finally has its first scurity update last month yes I said FIRST that is a good track record compaired to firefox (grin)

  90. Hi!!

Let’s see. No one mentioned extensions, multiple homepages, or proper PNG support. I’m a huge fan of Firefox, and the only time I open IE is when I have to make sure a page looks OK before I send it out into the world.

Best extension evar: Web Developer’s Toolbar.

And my first browser: Lynx. First graphical browser: probably NCSA Mosaic, way back in the day, as the kids say these days.

  94. Many of the people in the interview had no clue as to which browser they really liked. Most just didn’t like Microsoft. While that is understandable, the interviewees didn’t address the browsers. I use both, but I have noticed that Firefox does not handle all websites as well as IE6. Firefox also takes longer to boot, and scrambles the date on my website. I prefer IE.

  95. I can’t believe people argue about what historic technology is better. Someone needs to recreate the way we browse… and tabs just don’t do it. We are using 90’s technology with a new skin and it is sad.

  96. B.S. They are both the same…for me anyway. Firefox tabs are not that big of a difference if it can not access all pages and firefox often fails on me if i switch to another application on my computer. I have to have Firefox open and still and wait for it to load before i move to another application. IE is faster loading and people just want to be puesdo geeks and cool by saying anything but IE. Get a freakin life. How soon will they start to turn on firefox or mac if they start to become the monopolizing conglomerates in their niche. Posers and losers that want to be cool and different. I use both because both function for me and i have no prefence but had to vent at all those who are anti-microsoft .

  100. Am I the only one who get’s the impression that this video was staged?

Not only do the people in the video look like actors, they even talk like their answers have been scripted.

The standard answer of the IE user was: “I am dumb and was to lazy to try out firefox, even though I know it is cooler” and the variation of the firefox people’s answer was: “I am cool so I use firefox… it’s much safer and faster and the tabs are great…”

    Come on?! I haven
‘t heared this much of crap since my last teeth whitener TV ad… normal people would have answered: “What the hell is firefox?” Since most people do not even know it… so this was basicaly what made the advertisement lose it’s realistic touch.

Viral marketing… an you fall for it :-/
