I’m a Brit and probably one of your oldest viewers, since I was around when they re-introduced TV in the U.K.
Congratulations colonists for innovating RocketBoom, and how about an interview with the wonderful luv-birds Charlie and Camilla. After all, he might be King one day ….if Mummy doesn’t outlive him.
I see podcasters moaning about bandwidth, so I looked for bit torrent stuff and see that you have some (old) ones. Why didn’t this work for you? Granted, startup is messy, but with something like azureus and the rss feed plugin, things should go out there rapidly.
And since I see this stream of you guys planning subscription — I put my savings into a nice education site in 2000. Clearly mucho better than books, etc. and saves students $$ and effort. No perceived value. “Should be free.”, etc.
Be careful - real value and perceived value can be vastly different… Also, am I getting more bang for my buck by subscribing to 20 podcasts at $3.50/MO or just getting cable?

Fun facts with Left Eye:)
Left Eye’s condom was worn as a replacement for the left lens in her glasses.
1995, Left Eye gained eternal notoriety by torching the mansion she shared with boyfriend Atlanta Falcons’ football star Andre Rison. She also trashed his cars and was later admitted to jail and an alcohol rehabilitation clinic.

I’ve never heard of digibeta, so I’m not familiar with it. Is digibeta better than minidv? Cheaper or more expensive? Can you suggest any digibeta cameras for me to read about?

DigiBeta is the digital version of analog 1/2″ BetaSP, which used to be standard of the industry (network and local news) until DVCPro (Panasonic) and DVCAM (Sony) came out a few years ago. Those tapes are a bit larger than DV but record at 25 MBs same as DV. For Rocketboom purposes, I think all you need is the Sony HDV camera–HDR Z1U which uses mini DV cassettes. HDV even down rez’d to DV gives a much better pic than any DV camera on the market, IMHO. Amanda, you are getting the same type of “love notes” that Soledad O’Brien got on TechTV a few years ago… now look where she is. :-)
The Z1U?! For Rocketboom? That’s a bit expensive. Don’t you think something like Panasonic’s GS400 on a tripod would suffice?
Beware of friendly audiences with feedback “you want to hear” about paying.

At first those H.264 demos were impressive, but then I noticed that the company creating them uses BetaCams… the quality difference between a BetaCam and an HC1 is immense. Aside from that, the file sizes are also much bigger. I’m sure you’ve done much more research on this already, but from the face of it, it doesn’t seem like a practical plan.

Hey Drew and Amanda, just wanted to let you know my parents just discovered the internet. Two weeks ago they bought a computer and ordered DSL (I still can’t believe it) I put rocketboom in my dads favorites and he is hooked every day he calls me at work to tell me what you are talking about, I hate it cause I can’t watch till I get home from work. Please get the episodes started again he is killing me every couple of hours calling me asking why the site isn’t up yet, and I’m really missing it also. You guys are really doing a great job you have a baby boomer hooked the generation gap is officially closed. Sorry for the long post but one more thing, we will both pay for you subscription site.

I totally agree and second Stephen’s and Ameer’s comments! Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion(s) of course, but I would/will be happy to pay for additional content, if creates an environment where RB can continue to Vlog. RB produces a great product, and honestly, I’d hate to see any of the creativity that goes into the show be reformed into something more appropriate for an advertiser’s “target audience”.
