I’m a huge Rocketboom fan who’s disappointed by today’s Nike segment.
Nike’s use of child labor abuses and pittance wages has been known for a long time - why endorse, (by spending valuable time covering one of their products), such an irresponsible, ethically challenged corporation? I feel this was an extremely poor choice.

bummer about Nikes use of sweatshops alright but damn those trainers look hip I’ll be gettin’ a pair !
I love rocketboom dunno how it came to be in my itunes but so glad it is, Amanda you’re a legend !
Wow, your reports have a consistency and a great sense of humor.
Keith Oberman, on MSNBC, better extend his contract ASAP!
I’ve only been exploring vlogs for a couple weeks. Rocketboom is one of the few that really stand out.
Hi Rocketboom,
I was going to send you the podcast from space but you beat me to it! Good on you, as they say down here.
Yours

That whole Nike Segment smelt of product placement. That was disgusting. I wonder how much Rocketboom got from Nike?
Nike is a huge labour rights violator, how can Amanda conscientiously support their product? How can anyone?
I can’t believer that jckss who thinks it’s a ‘bummer’ about those sweatshops, but their so freaking ‘hip’ he just has to get them. This is why the world is so screwed.
Boo, that was horrible. Get back to some semi-intelligent reporting…
Cheer up, people of the comment box.
Fishes,
narco.
I thought the Nike thing was okay, but it did look a little like a commercial. Nike is a big proponent of child labor, but that’s how they can afford to design such cool shoes. It’s simple economics. Now, I agree it’s bad, but there is good to the company too, but not much.
As far as substandard wages, something people often forget is that you can’t compare $3 per day in rural China to our economy. They don’t buy things with American prices. You have to look at what that gets them, not at what it gets us. That being said, these large companies often do have substandard wages. It’s just hard to analyze it without knowledge of the local economies.
Just my two cents. It’s after work. Where’s my beer?
Mystic Meg, chill out sister (or brother) I didn’t mean anything nasty with my “Bummer” comment, I only meant that it was a bummer that I wasn’t a Nike sweatshop employee because those little dudes are entitled to a wonderful discount, apparently Nike is really generous to the “S.Shop” staff with some luckies receiving up to 30% off, You have to admit those trainers do look hip and I bet they’d look swell on you Meg, hey what’s your star sign ? bet your a leo right ? happy birthday Meg, whats your favorite color ? shit brown ? mine too, wanna work in a sweatshop ? 30% discount ?????? c’mon it’ll be fun, obviously hard work though but shit a little hard work never killed anyone except in ….. sweatshops - I see your point Meg, I’m not buying those trainers.
Product Placement?
Hey, if I had to watch Amanda plug some new product every day in order to keep rocketboom alive, I’d have no problem.
I’m the one who defended RB from jibes about the videogame store “commercial”, but I felt a little ashamed when I saw the Nike “ad”. It seemed like a product placement to me too.
If you guys have to have ads to stay alive and thriving, I don’t have a problem with that. The Nike segment seemed like an overt advertisement to me, but perhaps that’s just Amanda’s charisma and the lack of any other message than “wow, these are cool”.
i just wanted to say that just recently returning from Nicaragua, sweat shops are not ALL bad. Day labor in most 3rd world countries is difficult to come by, and those that do have “sweat shop” jobs fight to keep them because it may be the only way thier families are eating.
Enough Nike-bashing, already! If American consumers demand “everyday low prices”, somebody’s gonna have to pay. Our turn’s commin’. Chill.
I’m gettin’ me a pair of those Nike’s. I just hope my kid gets enough rest before he or she makes mine.
Hey, I take your word for it. It wasn’t an ad. Doesn’t change the fact that it seemed like it. My opinion isn’t based on a distaste for Nike, so I don’t really know what to say about your “armband” question. Maybe you’re confusing my sentiment with others here.
Yes, it’s good we’re discussing this issue. To be clear, I’m only making comments to (hopefully) help you guys know how your productions affect me. I’m not trying to steer your content one way or the other. You guys are generally pretty fun and informative. The Nike thing was an anomaly. Partly because it’s a loaded issue, a spotlight on a huge corporation’s product, and partly because there was no real news there… it’s a product we see commercials and ads for anyway.
I finally had to drop a line to Amanda and Co. to say:
I’ve been looking at Rocketboom with broadcasts starting last year (I think) — and I must say that I have become completely addicted to them.
It’s also really interesting to see the vblog entries become more (I shudder to say “content”) rich and well-designed as you get (presumably) more people involved, and more experience creating it…
