Eh not really, in MSDOS you are very restricted, in terminal in linux or solaris or bsd you can do everything that you can do in the GUI. Its completely different. MSDOS is really bad.

Well, not exactly. MSDOS is restricted not by functionality but because many of the required utilities were commercial ones while virtually all of the worthwhile unix utilities are free.
That being said there were parallel utilities for both systems up until the MS platform diverged away and basically relegated the command prompt to a second class citizen.

I love this show. But I would like to suggest to anyone with the means to stick a digital camera at the objective end of a telescope tracking any visible celestial object (Andromeda? Messier objects like Orion nebula?) and set exposure time to 30 seconds or more, and you WILL ACTUALLY SEE THE NEBULOUS COLOURS AND SHAPES. Most NASA images HAVE been enhanced to make look beautiful, but the real data is in the spectra and dimensions of objects. Astronomy is real science. Join an astroclub today!!!

Its completely different and anyway they dont do the same things and if you are comparing price alone linux is completely different. If you compare everything from installing software, terminal etc linux is so much more powerful. Also not everything is free commercial ones are available too. Its just a lot more effort was put into making terminal a powerful tool unlike MSDOS.

don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of linux (I dual boot fedora and windows 7 on my system) and use linux primarily for r&d.
I never said there were no commercial utilities available for linux just like I never said that there are no free utils available for MS systems. OSS is platform agnostic as is the drive to make good commercial software.
that being said there are key differences in terms of design that make windows better at some things and linux better at others. I use and enjoy both.

Linux, and it’s various distributions, differs from Windows in that Linux is not a data miner reporting to Microsoft and the Govt. Remember Microsoft being fined a million dollars a day and then after Y2K didn’t occur the suit against the corporation stopped.

Id just like to interject for a moment. What youre referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as Ive recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
i not mean to be picky but when you said “Linux script” you should have said “Bash script” or “shell script” because you can run the script on most unix based operating systems like *BSD, OS X, and GNU/Linux

here really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machines resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system but useless by itself it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added or GNU/Linux
All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

But its a lot easier to say linux and more people know it as linux so its perfectly acceptable to call it that. The FSF are the only people who insist that everyone call it GNU/linux. In fact because there are multiple tools that are also in BSD should we call it GNU/BSD/Linux?

Not much from the original GNU project is included in distros now. Its a fact. The only thing is that compliers and Emacs and one or two command line utils are included. The Gnome desktop isnt considered part of the GNU project. So really there isnt much of the GNU system in there. So really no reason to call it GNU/Linux.
there’s a big difference between a few tools and an entire operating system, Linux is less then one percent of the GNU/Linux system. it’s true that X is not part of the GNU project but Gnome (GNU Network Object Model Environment) is. but they are not a necessary part of the operating system. it is the Gnu operating system with the Linux kernel. if you didn’t have GNU you probably wouldn’t have Linux or it would be running with the Minux user land which is extremely buggy.

I know that the G in Gnome is GNU but many other systems use that too do you want to impose the GNU name on them too? So by your logic it should be GNU/Open Solaris. Gnome gets no help from the FSF which is over the GNU project and was started by people not affiliated to the FSF project. Its a historical term and is linked with an extremist group.

I didnt mention either. You just stuck a flag on top of Gnome and called it a GNU project and it isnt it wasnt started by the GNU project although it was made for the GNU/Linux system then. All the components that GNU made have been long superseded or deprecated by more advanced tools. So there isnt much that GNU started that are still there.

Though I’m not sure this is what she was getting at, many photos of space are not of the visible spectrum (ie what we would be able to see with the naked eye) but rather things outside of that spectrum: ultraviolet, x-ray, etc. What this means is that they invisible electromagnetic waves are translated into photos of something we can see… by a computer.
