Art isn't about sophistication or complexity, it's about the message or social commentary. Oh, and I've been working as a professional designer and artist for 15 years. Did you end up getting that internship from your lovely demo reel?

I'd say there are lots of people doing "that", just check out any site like DeviantArt or similar.
The difference is that they don't print them out, stick them to wooden blocks and make a big deal out of it.

I don't believe that people that buy crap do any harm to the good artists out there. So, someone managed to get people's attention with little imagination, well, that only means that people require too little to be amused. Hence, pop culture.
