Yes, consumer genetics show that is out to steal your old hard earned money. What they don’t tell you is that you are not your genes and that you can effect them leading to curing yourself, that’s right. curing yourself of whatever ails you.

So if you had genetic resistance to cancer you wouldn’t allow scientists to use to make a cure? Or you would only allow them to use it in exchange for money?

Crackpot? Hardly. It isn’t wrong to question changes to the established order of things. ‘Scientists’ aren’t the ones who you deal with when you go to get you’re cold medicine. Pharmaceutical companies are. Lets say that a researcher finds a piece of you’re DNA that holds the cure for cancer, the company patents it so that they get exclusive rights on it’s sale and they name it after it’s genetic sequencing.

You don’t see any issues there?

People up there don’t mince words and name the business
“consumer genetics”. RB thinks it too candid and wraps
it all under the nicer, if tautologic, headline “personalized genetics”.
Personalized? Is there a wholesale genetics too?

The concerns of the guy of SPIMES about sensitive
information to be gathered from a discarded shoe look like
puerile in a time that a human genome travels into an iPhone.

If the diseconomies of the profit driven and exaggeratedly financed
US healt care system were cut and the spare money funneled
into genetics research enanchement, the US citizens would enjoy
a better and more equitable health care, and the whole planet
would have the benefits of amazing genetics breakthroughs.

    Markets’ efficiency is a myth.

@SirReptitious: That’s 23 chromosome pairs. ‘Base pairs’ refers to the bonded nucleotide pairs on DNA & RNA strands (like guanine to cytosine in DNA), of which there are billions in the human genome. I’m guessing ‘chromosome’ is what you meant, though. ;)

So Genetic Engineering isn’t that bad, depending on how the Society uses it.

I think because it has negative implications to those who actually have the “disorders” or are commonly percieved as genetically undesirable. In addition it sort of legitimizes the negative stigma that society has towards those who have these disorders or are thought to be genetically undesirable.

likely; recently, western medicine is buying into that “chi” stuff. Scans of the human body have revealed bioelectrical patterns play a role in health though; exceptionally healthy people, their bioelectrical energy flows vigorously. Unhealthy people have too many nervous impulses here, to little there, in a word they are not “balanced.” Sorry for using that term. Its possible, that when bioelectricity is not optimal, genetic expression of offspring may not be optimal either.

  89. pillsburydoughboy47

So what does this mean? If the secret of electricity role regarding the moment of conception can be deciphered, an optimal combination of protein, with just the right electrical charge could, hypothetically, create a “perfect human.” I know I sound like an atheist but I’m not; I like to “explore.”

Indeed. My only problem will be when humans can create their own ideal offspring. This will most likely lead to mass produced armies and the like. This is close to cloning. Is cloning correct? in the eyes of god, No. In the eyes of scientists, Yes.

Symetry and beauty in nature, is connected to function; there are many things in nature that posses both ideal symetry, as well as function, so I have to disagree with you there somewhat. Because beauty, symetry and function are all governed by the golden ratio, engineered humans, would also be governed by it. The irony of all of this being is that the ancient Greeks, have been proven to be correct lately; that the best fighters, the best soldiers, all tend to be “good looking.”

    Reply
  95. JonnoStrife

I think i see the point your getting at. Each human is made of two parts right? the fathers genes and the mothers. the golden ratio is the whole cannot be greater than the two parts . But what i’m trying to say is that once you can split genes and recreate variations at will, then you can create who/whatever you want. The fact that you can split genes would remove all effect the Golden ratio has on the Offspring.

I like all the comments from what are obviously certified geneticists. Most of the work offered by these companies is suspect and only follow causal relationships, they are far from useless but you cannot read as much as they want you to believe.
Most of the advice you get never varies, eat healthy and exercise.
Take a look at the insurance industry (UK, US is very different) if genetic testing was so powerful they would be lobbying for it, as such only 1 test has been shown to be useful.

i mean that if these people ever suggested that some genetic changes happen “spontaneously.. if they ever dared to suggest that truth, they would all be out of jobs. because their entire premise and business model (funding, marketing etc etc) rely on the public perception that we are VICTIMS of random, uncontrollable genetics, when that is simply not the case. stem cells for one, shatter that theory, as does the “immortal squid”.

There is no problem with pc. The problem is that the parents should tell to kids that they shouldn’t be addicted. I played with with wow over a year long, but when I saw my classmates always talks about this sh*t, I deleted it and I searched for an alternative activity. Now I play roleplaying games with my friends in the town’s young center. It’s really interesting and increases your fantasy and personality not as those sh*ts like wow and lineage2.

imo, 23andMe and all “genetics” companies of that nature are just in the game to shovel in cash right now. All they can tell you about your susceptibility for a genetic disorder/disease is “you have x% chance”. The percentages themselves are based on our current understanding of the genome (i.e. poor).
There’s too much of a possibility that people will misinterpret the results (not understanding about probability).

Fear of death is not the basis for faith in God. Typical atheist ignorance…

An understanding of what it means to be eternally alive but separated from God, on the other hand… that is something that, if one even remotely crack the depths of, ought to give any thoughtful person a respectful concern for his or her spiritual well being.

Trivialized, false declarations of religion are an invention to give weak-willed people something to believe in so they may avoid a genuine study of faith.

Dutch people and their damn caravans are the Hemorrhoids of Europe. Almost everyone despises them. Most of them have no appreciation for culture and diversity.

Just look at their football team - always fighting and arguing and acting like complete arrogant plicks - yet they’re easily one of the best.

Erm…. we have no real understanding of death and probably never will within our life-time. So many different beliefs floating around with no concrete undeniable substance to them.

Also I thought God was omnipotent so you have a DEEPLY flawed sense of logic if you believe we exist seperated from God.

Once mankind invents the means to encode our brain patterns into a computer - we’ll pretty much be immortal. Death would no longer mean the same thing as it does now.

When speaking of beliefs, talking about what “we” understand has no merit unless we agree. I think it’d more honest to just say what you believe and leave it at that…

The quantity of opinions does not undermine the provability of facts or the logical soundness of some beliefs compared to others.

It is not I who believe that I exist separated from God. It is you who claims to be the atheist.

The consciousness of a soul cannot be sustained by a computer; only its ambient patterns.

Quantity may not undermine provability but it sure as hell does not solidfy it.

You arguing semantics - the fact is religion trend is weakening - people are transcending it.

Why couldn’t a soul be sustained by a computer? Our brains are merely a housing for our alleged “soul” why couldn’t it be housed in an advanced computer EVENTUALLY.

Because then we wouldn’t have emotions, which are the point of life.

Emotions are extremely complex and machines are no where near capable of mimicking them. It’s not even worth attempting. And don’t forget that “soul” is just one of the many words used to define conscious energy, which everything apparently has already (even computers).

Unfortunately that study never caught on, as religion is still too trendy. (:

There is a point if the only people to benefit from it would be a few upper-millionaires/billionaires and people in certain seats in government. We need to get rid of capitalism: it doesn’t work long term. Humans need to evolve past that. It’s not by letting the rich asshats of today live forever that we’re going to achieve it.

Our ability to use eugenics is a direct result of evolution. It’s the logical outcome of evolution. We’ve gained the ability to control our own advancement, and we should. Evolution does not mean progressions. Eugenics bridges that gap, and makes evolution equate to progress.

Look around you. Nature is not very good at creating humans. So many imperfections and diseases. It can be avoided with selective breeding. Real progress can be made, fast.

    You’re the idiot, not me.

i think both of you have a good point, and none of you are idiots. science can make our lives better, but is not the solution to all of our problems, since the human being is a social animal, and ideologies and values are escencial to make a good society, where people can be happy (assuming that there is no point in being genetically perfect if you can’t be happy), but ideologies and values cannot solve practical problems such as diseases, feeding, etc,

evolution means progression. ‘devolution’ or ‘degeneration’ would the antonym. that said, each and every one of our “problems” has a cause, but we are so ignorant to them that we would rather believe it’s caused by some random exogenous force compiling chance genetics of disadvantage upon us with no reason. problem? we think we know more than we do and we’re so sure our solutions are the right ones, without even acknowledging that there are causes (of our own doing) to be found… how foolish

What’s wrong with racial purity? What is wrong with preservation of genetic traits? If the preferred traits were to come from one single race, why would it be wrong to preserve those genetics? If those traits are what the collective agrees is the ‘ideal’, why not preserve those genetic traits? Why would that be wrong?

Because if we have racial purity, then we have certain disadvantages. For example: take a “pure” Norwegian and put him in the Kalihari desert. He doesn’t have the adaptations that the Bushmen have to survive in the harsh conditions. Now, take an Anglo-San mix, and he will survive best in both conditions. It’s generalizing, not specialization. It works with dogs, too. Get a pure-bred chow and he will be more agressive than a chow-shepherd cross. Mix breeds are more balanced out.

Viruses constantly change, so we have to change as well to get immune to the virus. Genetic disorders DO stem from our own genes- that is what makes them genetic. I think that what we should do is isolate the code and work to eliminate it. But really, it’s quite foolish to state that ginetic disorders are because of us. And your statement is hypocritical, because you’re going on about how we think that we’re right and then you condemn the way that these people work. Good on you :)

Well, virulents were never dominant on this planet, and i dont see them becoming dominant any time soon. they are not sovereign entities; they fully rely on a host. the fact is we have virus banks and a lot of behind-the-scene$ $henanigans that are facilitating, causing recent viruses to appear as ‘evolving’. i’m well aware of the textbook pages you’re reiterating, however i dont agree that theyre right. genes dont cause illness, illness causes expression of genes. the problem is “illnesses”

Have you seen today’s world? People with money control it. Most of them get their money by screwing over others (big oil companies, pharmaceuticals, and many many more).

When is the last time you saw a rich person do time? It happens rarely. They won’t be handing out ‘live forever’ vaccines at your local free clinic. It’ll be so expensive that only the super rich will be able to afford it. What if it’s illegal like Stem cell research and cloning humans? The rich can afford to find loop holes.

i hope genetic information is used to create vaccines and gene therapies to cure all manner of illnesses that are genetic in all humans.
I think it would be dangerous, however, to judge people purely on disease related predispositions.
Humans are made up of tens of thousands upon tens of thousands of genes. To look at one type of weakness a person can have (medical for example), and then ignore all the potential strengths of the genome would be very ignorant thing to do.
