I honestly almost deleted this from my subscription box, because Molly’s face wasn’t on the thumbnail. Hey, I listen to NPR. Anyway, I’m glad I clicked it and if anyone reading this feels badly about their role in this (basically all of us) you can consider becoming vegetarian/vegan since factory farming plays the biggest role in the pollution of the Earth (more than all transportation combined), and you can support urban cycling. Thank you.

@FossilEntertainment - Yes, we do. The majority of the world’s vehicles (not to mention all of the non-vehicular machinery out there - generators, etc) run on gasoline, and while gradually shifting towards the use of alternative fuel sources is a smart idea to explore, the notion that we could do so immediately simply isn’t feasible. So yes, we really have to have gasoline. Really.

You know, technically speak you can burn the whole oil with napalm… just need a spark and boom, no more oil. It will be nice and clear in 2days. The problem is that… if the oil drill is still functioning… it may blow up. But people want to preserve that oil and recycle it to make fuel. Thats why they aren’t burning it. And at this stage, burning it would do not good because the damage has already been done and all living creatures that req light are now dead. Only the ones that dont live.

@cjbackintime - I have a theory that the oil companies monitor all headline news very carefully for anything to do with spills, drilling perceived shortages, etc, etc. Once they’re sure these stories have become common knowledge, they hike the prices on ooil across the board, so people will justify the hike while making small talk at the pumps. “Hmmph. A 50% increase since last week,” people will say. “Must be that spill on the Gulf coast.” “…must be.”

@WeatherManToBe There are enough veggies grown for everyone in the world to eat, but most of it is used to feed animals that are harmful to eat anyway, and they poop more than humans. The poop isn’t handled so it seeps into our waterways and results in deadzones, bodies of water where all life has been killed. Sort of like this oil spill. And the majority of sea life caught and killed to catch a particular fish is bycatch. That destroys the ocean’s ecosystem, sort of like this oil spill.

It would cost a dam sight more than that to switch off from oil. just in lost tax revenue alone. let alone all the development and infer structure needed to make a new fuel source such has hydrogen viable and available.

Sad as it is, unfortunately this will be remembered as only one of many such to come. After years of watching politicians and environmentalists lobby ineffectually to mitigate human impact on the planet, I realize now that our desire for the luxury of cheap energy will always trump ecological responsibility. In the end we will use up Earth and leave only a smoldering ball of charcoal.

When a hurrican rolls on through all that crap will be washed ashore. Say bye bye to your fresh water lakes and streams! obama declared the swine flu a national emergency, why not this oil spill? Could it be that BP gave obama 3 million in campaign contributions? BP’s assets should be siezed and divided up with those that have suffered damages. BP should be no more!!!

Hi Molly, If they use different variations of the pipe within a pipe they may be able to siphon the oil to a container ship. If one method doesn’t work, they should try another. They also need to use inflatable plugs around the insertion pipe. Its not a hopeless situation.

@joey007007 of course, but the whole island does not make much of a difference. It’s hardly a zit on the face of the earth.

And yes, the marine life is patchy, which is a good thing considering this oil. If the marine life is spread out, less will be affected.

The replies i’m getting act like I’m not taking this thing seriously, of course I am, I was only commenting on the person who was acting like this would literally end the world. I know this will affect us for decades to come.

Things like this are going to keep happening until everyone takes the steps to stop using this gunk to power their cars. Of course stoping the use of oil all together would be stupid, but can you imagine how much less we would hear about disasters like this if we didn’t depend on it so much? I’m not saying it’ll never happen after that but if there was a demand for normal and useful all-electric cars like the nissan leaf, the gov. would have to come up with the funds for the appropriate infostructure. And there are plenty of people willing to take those steps… I know that right now there’s a large group of people (including myself) who, as a reaction to this disaster, have stopped riding or driving cars altogether and refuse to purchase a car that isn’t a zero emmision car.

Mount a cannon barrel centered in a tripod base , that would have a cannon shell loaded into it , with an expanding war head - lowered into place over the leaking hole, with the projectile pointed downward [ duh ] then , gradually lower the bullet closer down into the hole, and fire !
If the force of the projectile is greater than the oil pressure , it could possibly be plugged !
It seems that all of the attempts so far , are a joke , and no one’s laughing !

Obviously, BP was working outside its area of expertise. Special rules should be applied to something that hasn’t been done before. More safeguards need to be set in place. Especially if you are working in the dark!

The people of this world have to realise that catastrophies happen both manmade and natural and all the safegaurds in the world are not going to prevent them. Beating each other up after the event is pointless. The Earth is not a fragile place, she is hugely powerful and will heal herself. If she gets really mad with us little ‘bugs’, she will wipe us out in one fell swoop!

This will sound gross, but, get the humans to collect and sell the oil.
if a south coast american could paddle out and scoop up a few litres of oil then return to shore and sell it, market forces would ignite a rapid cleanup. We need a wealthy environmentalist to be willing to buy the useless stuff and or a LAW-MAKER to force BP to pay for each litre collected by local citizens.

@gattstheblacksword 1. If any, it will raise the oil’s price in form of new taxes and regulations for the companies.
    2. That isn’t even the 0,06% of the world oils production.
Sorry about my English (and your catastrophe, of course), I share your indignation (an oil tanker spilled almost 600000 barrels of oil near where i live).

I’m convinced that the oil spill is being handled by the writers of LOST. Each time one of their outlandish methods fails they come up with another idiotic plan to fail NEXT time.

@RivetsAndRain these arnt ‘new’ plans either.. every single one they have tried so far, was originally used in the IXTOC disaster in the mid 70s… and this one is even worse.. the only thing that worked in the IXTOC one.. was drilling relief wells near the spot, to suck up oil from the sides.. to lower pressure enough that it could be sealed. and thats months away from completion.
