It has been a relief from a larger laptop I carried around. However I am dealing with the limitations of a netbook. One does not have to suffer much. This change helped me to be a little more resourceful.

Haha, it doesn’t install any codecs, it just uses it’s own ones and doesn’t care about anything else. It’s terrible. Better have some good codecs properly installed and configured so that your files will play back in anything.

The device you were using primarily during the video looked more like a UMPC than a netbook device. What was that? And is that your “personal portable”? I use a Samsung Q1P myself, it’s old and outdated, but I threw in another Gb of RAM, and its found new life. I also am running Moblin on it, but for your target audience, I imagine XP would be more familiar to them.

Vista isn’t optimized for the lightweight hardware in netbooks, so it’s correct to say that it’s best not to run it on one. But I’ve heard nothing but great things about Windows 7 running on them. Why do you recommend running an 8-year-old operating system?

If you think about it, netbooks are actually laptops, and laptops are actually underpowered, overpriced desktops. Today’s laptops are usually parked on a desk all day, since they are too heavy and bulky to be lugged around.

Netbooks ARE powerfull. I own a 10 inch eeepc and I run serious applications like Mathlab, Labview and several electronics simulators. Netbooks are GREAT for working on them! Don’t understimate them. You just have to know wich ones are good (ASUS and Samsung). The only thing they can’t handle are games (and vista).
There are netbooks and netbooks. The ones she is holding in her hands probably work like toys, proper for just surfing. But the 10 inch ones are rather like real laptops.

My “netbook” has a 10.1 inch screen. Is that really a netbook? Seems a little too big to fit into the netbook category to me. I just installed Linux on it, Windows takes up way too many system resources to run on a 1.6Ghz dual core. I have 2GB ram on it so it’s enough to run Windows in a VM.
Always encrypt your whole drive with TrueCrypt, you don’t want to leave your netbook behind at work or school and have people look at your data. 64 Character passwords ftw.

Back a few years ago, there also were sub-14″ sub-1.6kg devices without a built in optical (or earlier: floppy) drive, and we called them subnotebooks. I even had a 9″ 1kg one from 2002 on. The very first one i recall is Toshiba Libretto from mid 90ies.
Netbook is perhaps just a new buzzword, but perhaps also a change in the status and pricing, since subnotebooks before EeePC have traditionally been more expensive than full-featured devices.
Asus decided not to compete with smartphones. Instead they put the netbook on steroids. With the miniaturization problems already solved, they just gave a cheap device added values. Soon every other manufacturer was building 9″ netbooks.
With the competition, the netbooks started to grow in size and performance, but not so much in price, cause the basic mold is a cheap device, not a desktop.

On the other hand the original netbook came in 2007. It was a 7″, 4GB solid state drive ASUS. It was more like a Nintendo DS for web surfing. It wasn’t a bit hit. But its low power,low cost, and designed from scratch INTEL ATOM processor turned out to be unexpectedly powerfull.
Regular notebooks are like desktop hardware crunched into a little shell. They get expensive, because manufacturers have to invest extra in fixing the power, space an thermal difficulties. The smaller they get, the more expensive they get. That’s why the 2002 subnotebooks were even more expensive.
The name NETBOOK, is not quite right but it does have its reasons. The main difference between a NOTEbook and a NETbook is not their performance, but rather their origin and their original concept… and therefore their price.
