The space shuttle program is already being phased out so demanding a cancelation of it is redundant. The Orion program is pushing for sept. 2014 but its future is in question
also and may be replaced by the Ares or another unnamed program. Obama is currently giving nasa approx. 2 billion more to try and close the gap to an earlier date but has not endorsed either the Ares or Orion. We’ll see.:)

NASA’s shuttle is aand always has been a cover for the militarization of outer space. It is an enormous tax subsidy for high-tech military research, developing weapons and such spin-off gadgets as will soon be sold back to us at retail prices, just when they figure out how it can be marketed at a profit by the private tyrannies we call corporations.

But Caitlin is okay in this one.

I have this image as one of my wallpapers. I never thought the view in the windows was anything but a second image. Actually, I thought it a black background layer with a layered image of Earth (one which I also have) and with the stars added graphically.

I just didn’t thing it mattered. It made nice display for the instrument panel. I never bothered to look for disclaimers.

Still I don’t think the image is faked.
I am such a skeptic that with the time I grew skeptical to the skeptics. Just think of what has been said for decades about the Apollo 11 mission and the photographic documentation. Not one argument withstood debunking. Besides, certainly in the outer space stars appear differently than from the earth surface and through a dense atmosphere.
The culmination of skepticism is that something must be true.
Too bad we have so few genuine conspiracies. I’d like to have more. Truth is so dull.

I agree with you completely. I dislike conspiracy theorists. As in the case of Apollo, they just are out to steal the show without even any gain, just deny someone credit.

I grew up following all the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions with my very young heart, mind, body and sole.

But this is just a PR picture being made less boring and more informative, like setting a museum piece in a contextual background. It is common for PR people to assume we will understand that even though we don’t always.

I am compelled to inform you, and I mean this nicely :), that the blogger in question does follow up and gets a confirmation of his suspicions from NASA.

The link is on the top of his page that RB links to and it is oddly entitled, “OK, so maybe NASA didn’t fake that image.” The article explains how NASA assures him that it did fake the image. He admits to being alarmist about it.

        Here’s the direct link:

        http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2009/01/29/ok-so-maybe-nasa-didnt-fake-that-image/

As I explained, I still don’t think it is an issue in the first place.

    3. Why should we cancel? Let me count the ways. First, it costs about 10x what they said it would to fly in the initial estimates. Second, it’s a really good space truck, if you need to bring things back, but we don’t need that much. LDEF was cool, but we only needed to do that once. Third, it’s especially risky, what with those tiles that are so fragile. Fourth, a large portion of the vehicles is 1970’s technology. It’s time for an update.

I would much rather see my tax money go to development of a new technology from which we can derive benefits at home than to maintenance and continuation of a very expensive program. (Yes, it’s not much in comparison to the government’s budget, and I’m all for space exploration - I’m down on the Shuttle as the way to do it.)

It’s quite interesting how Orion brings back a number of aspects of the Apollo crafts, but one thing that has improved dramatically since then is computers. Go - really - to the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama and see their Saturn V. (There are two others on display at Kennedy Space Center (Florida) and Johnson Space Center (Houston), but the museum in Huntsville is bigger and better.) See the instrumentation ring. It’s 6.6m in diameter, weighs nearly 2000 kg, and your CoCo has similar capabilities. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturn_Launch_Vehicle_Digital_Computer

And on the topic of CoCos, I was a SysOp on a local BBS during its heyday. New CoCo owners would get on and start TYPING IN ALL CAPS, presumably because there is no caps-lock key. On several occasions I helped them figure out how to use lower-case so they wouldn’t all be shouting at us.

The Columbia disaster made it impossible for NASA to continue ignoring that the entire fleet is well past its designed retirement date?

Shuttle missions were reinstated following the Columbia disaster with a hard cap on number of flights for each remaining shuttle?

The remaining objective is to finish necessities on the International Space Station?

NASA neither has the budget to build replacement shuttles nor the desire for such antiquated technology?

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_shuttle#Retirement

    5. Ook

Also, every post-Columbia disaster shuttle mission flies on the contingency that another shuttle is at the ready for an rescue mission. So there are effectively only two shuttles left in cycle?

Since an ISS emergency could predate the space plane, no more non-emergency missions with aging equipment?

It’s because his blog is called “Bad Astronomy”). He’s making fun of classical conspiracy theory sites. You definitely have the spirit of Joanne, good job.

But do you mind to stop flooding my ‘latest subscription updates’ with ‘olol I broke some record nobody cares about’ videos? Thanks in advance.

If Phil Plait is watching this: Are you ready to answer my questions?

Where is your proof that Bill Kaysing claimed that ANY kind of space travel is impossible?

How can you allege that he made that statement when Kaysing clearly stated “possibly our Surveyor did land on the moon”?

Do you have any comment regarding Operation Dirty Trick?

Yeah, because knowledge is exclusive to a specific age group.

That’s why you can rest assured that if a kid tries to tell you that hydrogen reacts with oxygen, they are automatically wrong.

Not to mention that kids can’t read Autocues, or be talking heads either.

i dont like to be racist or anything - discriminating age
but I’m talking mainly about this girls attitude… you know what I mean

she display it not in a scientific/fact form but adds an expressive attitude

short: she acts like a slut or brat or arrogant or something

I thought she was great and was impressed with her confidence. Being expressive only makes hearing what she has to say more entertaining. How expressively information is shared has absolutely nothing to do with how scientifically based the information is. Science is not boring or meant to be shared as if it was. Your judgement of her is just rude and doesn’t exactly cast you in a great light.

If you live in place with clear atmosphere and south you will see stars and milky way every night. Now it is so strange if you take look at photos from moon or in orbit with no stars.

Your own post explains the difference. “see” stars vs “photos.”
A camera lens is not an eye, its a camera lens.
Go find a spot where you “see” stars. Lots of them. Now take a pic, with your own camera, from that exact same spot at the exact same time.
Your photo wont see a single star. Try it tonight.
