Heavy reliance on just one pesticide tends to select mosquitos with the most resistance to the pesticide. You end up evolving pesticide resistant mosquitos. When that happens it is probably best to stop using the overused pesticide and switch ot another one which acts differently.

A lot of very very serious problems with using DDT. But, on the other hand, a Toxicology professor once told me he thought that DDT, used against malarial mosquitos, had saved more human lives than any other chemical in history.

Hopefully there are better solutions now, or on the horizon.

It seems that if the mosquitoes are out of control, something in nature is out of sorts - like the water, the birds and bats and fish who eat the mosquitoes or the larvae - something. Much better to get that addressed than dump new poisons around, but I’m sure someone’s bottom line is getting in the way.

  36. The resistance to insecticide is an endless struggle. The real thing would be a biotechnological breakthrough capable to make the mosquitoes harmless. For example, fish can be sterilized, why not insects? But to recombine the DNA is costly and malaria is a disease of the poor. In Africa they have even problems with the supply of drugs for the ordinary treatment.

Colombian Scientific Manuel Élquin Patarrollo invented a biological vaccine years and years ago (about 15 years perhaps?) and gave away his patent rights for the sake of cheap vaccination for those persons. But then U.S. pharmaceuticals avoided cheap vaccination for everyone by means of legal tricks and deceit… Sad but true.

Funny thing about your post, i was just about to write why not invent a vaccine since pharmaceutical companies are so into vaccines, it’s all we’ve heard for the past 8-10 months and now they are in Vaccine Heaven as the sheeple get their shots. But I didn’t post as I figured these people can’t afford to pay for such a vaccine, so why bother. Then I read your post, and you know what, I BELIEVE IT! Walt warned me to stay away from conspiracy theories but after this HINI fiasco, I believe. Like the californicator Mulder once said.

i thought in the 70’s they had tones of ideas on how to stop malira mosquitoes i guess none of them worked… like the one where they found if a large group of mosquitoes were placed in a small container they would produce a toxin to deal with crowding naturally, so they thought they would harness that. or they were going to pour soap into the breeding grounds… to poison them.

    @Leonardo

Malaria is not only confined to the poor. From the Economic Burden of Malaria you can see that it also affects fairly well to do nations.

“Certain countries with high incomes still face serious malaria problems because of their geographical location. Oman, with an income per capita of almost $10,000, has severe malaria throughout the country except in remote areas of high altitude and desert. United Arab Emirates, next door with one of the highest income levels in the world, has also been unable to eliminate malaria.”

    To all:

Here are some resources for those that want to learn more about Malaria instead of a T-Shirt:

    1. Yes, you mention rich countries. But by the wikies I observe that Oman and United Arab Emirates have a small population (2,577 + 4,800). Less than the urban area of Cairo (8 millions). So the question is if, beyond their considerable national or per capita income, they are also a market interesting enough to guarantee a return on the huge investment necessary to develop a biotechnological remedy to mosquitoes. Big Pharma doesn’t patent anything without a more than convincing financial plan, and the money by the governments isn’t a great deal.

Set aside the basic research ad hoc, a transgenic sheep whose milk is used for the extraction of hormones for the Hepatitis B — just to make an example — can be $500.000 worth.

Of course the right strategies (conventional or biotechnological) have to be designed by the specialists who are already on the problem.

IN the 1970’s DDT the most successful mosquito insecticide was banned based on flawed research and false scientific studies conducted by groups with a particular political agenda. So now millions of people die every year from mosquito borne illness.

I know there are limited resources for that area, but it would be nice to see the natives of that area educated on insecticide rotation. You can usually keep insects non-resistant to insecticides if you can use them on a rotating cycle. 1-2 years of one insecticide, 1-2 years of another, then swaping back and forth. It helps keep insects from passing on resiliancies to specific insecticides. We use this principle in the turf industry with great success.

Well that was a nice weekend roundup of Nneka.

To my untrained ear, she is a thoughtful, hot and genuine singer/songwriter with sophisticated “Afropop”/world beat sound that she brings to hip hop, reggae and a little sole.

Despite my current lack of a music budget, I plan on making my first online music purchase. (I generally patronize the surviving used CD stores.)

I am thinking the “No Longer at Ease” album.

Last FM is confusing me. Is an Amazon MP3 somehow different and why does “7digital” have only 5 tracks and is there somewhere else I’d rather patronize? I’m note buying from iTunes.

      Guess I’ve got homework.

It is true. What is NOT True is the lies about downstream DDT poisoning of other animals. That was based on false evidence that was later proven to be a lie but by then the political damage had been done. You don’t think people will lie about such stuff to support their political agenda? It happens all the time. Same thing happened with the Ozone scare and Global Warming. All based on limited and falsified evidence for a political cause.

Stop watching FOX news. The ozone layer is getting better because of controls put in place on industrial chemical use. Global warming is still getting worse. We need vigilance to keep these things from getting out of hand.

this is only partially true. DDTs are harmful to humans though the toxicity of it was exaggerated. The real harm comes from chornic exposure to the chemical which is carcinogenic and may cause a number of reproductive problems and to wildlife particularly felines and birds (both rodent predators, another common disease vector).

The short story is basically that DDTs are good at killing insects and if used sparingly and judiciously can be a boon but are dangerous in the long term.
