for situations like this, they should make a charger that will charge on kinetic energy. maybe even on biomass but that’s too much for a phone.

wait a minute, why don’t they buy a recharge kit that is powered by turning a crank? I own a small kit that recharges my cellphone/ipod/any small electronic device that fits with the adapters included. not expensive and would help on those rainy days.

For developing economy countries such as Kenya, which have huge surface, a lot of wilderness, small road and railway network, and small electricity grid the combination of satellite communications, solar power supply and wireless technology can be a wonderful developmental resource. And it’s an infrastructure that can be implemented with costs comparatively low, whithin the investement capacity of Kenya. Satellite access of course can be hired. The whole of it could allow Kenya to jumpstart beyond a lot of logistical problems that troubled European and North American industrialization.

Good stuff, Ruud, though I suspect that if you have a problem to get a full and ready solar recharge in an equatorial country like Kenya those chinese phones have still a long way to go, and the interviewees who bought them feigned with you more satisfaction than they really felt. By following and filming them secretly you could make an award winning video on Swahili swear words.

I think they should put Mickey Ears on each cell phone. They’re self-charging.

Naaah, quite unpractical. You ought to stay put and turn your head around on a 180 degrees arc in 12 hours in that engineers call the sunflower emulation. Also you have to line your ears with a foil and get the connecting plug of the recharging cable into one your bodily holes. Guess which?

that’s so neat, i would totally get one if i were a nature’s outdoors kind of person. only problem i wonder about is how resistant the solar cell is, if you drop your phone once i hope it wouldn’t damage it permanently.

There are so many solar powered invations that these people could use.The government should really focus on making stuff like this available and affordable for them considering how little work they are putting into their power grid by the looks of it.

Okay, like I understand and respect that, but do you really need to? I mean, it’s great your an atheist, so am I, but there are so many better places to argue the non-exisentance of god than a solar powered cell video. I’m not saying you did anything wrong, but you could do so much better….

Most people are on prepay/pay as you go plans. The charges are dirt cheap, less than a cent for a text message and 1-2c a minute for calls. but most people ring and hang up (called ‘beeping’) to let someone know they want to contact them, and that is for free.

Apple made a computer years ago that could be wound up, never took off. Also, you can buy small solar cells that plus via USB into phones such as the iPhone to recharge them.
