cool =)
Excellent report. Needs more Caitlin.
Why paint the last picture…?
Neither the ads or the whitewash/art are gratifying or aesthetic in any sense. One or the other, who cares? The activity is just something to do, instead of sitting around wondering what to do today.
Teenage wasteland. Been there, done that. And with no direction, purpose, or meaning to life, … and the field is ripe for a new Cause. Motivating this and future generations, propelling a spirit of “can do.”
Our Caitlin + Rocketboom = a springboard
A computer system mimicking biological cognition. A new form, species of life. Creationplace: the New York metropolitan area. Accomplish this, and we are the envy of the world, forever.
hah, I love how artists pass of naked pics as art. Just admit you like drawing naked penises!
And we need more Caitlin.
Using the concept of grafitti in a positive way. Good job dude. : )

DAT ASSSSSS! O.O
Bravo!!
I care. Down with Ad pollution! Create your own space and let it shine through you and through your art.
“Create your own space, etc.,” is the key, yes. But for the proliferation of urban information spewed everywhere, I’ll walk past an ad or whitewashed art with the same lack of attention.
So much mediocrity today. Nothing captures and drives the best of the human spirit. So much blasé, today.
this is great! why haven’t i seen any? :(
I need to HEAR Caitlin’s angelic voice, where art thou Catlin.
Cause it’s art…
Why not?
so this was an ant-freemarket thing huh?
good idea but unfortunately the majority of the public’s art consists of F words and N words.. ever read park benches?
Less crudely-drawn peckers, more & more Caitlin!
lol, would have been a great idea if the artwork was actually good. I’m sure family’s with 5 year olds will appreciate their kids seeing nude deer people in public places.
I prefer bathroom stalls, I do still wonder why so many people take pens along while taking a dump.
ahaha
metallica rules

ROFL :D:D:D:D:D
id rather see 5 foot heads of zac effron and vanessa hudgins than art XP
Ads have just one social justification to exist: they are a source of money to pay good quality contents into the media system. If you think about it they have no other valid rationale. Surely not an economic one: no free markets can exist without rational and informed consumers, whereas ads are a tool of scientific misinformation. So, as it stands, as long as we need ads to keep the media system running, we should at least keep them from pouring outside the range of media financing and pollute our social and mental spaces. Actually, we should be fierce at it: why billboards at all?
Yeah because protecting children from nude art is totally the foremost concern. Artistic nudity isn’t corrupting children, commercialism is. Stop crusading under the banner of the righteous and realise that nobody should be ashamed of the naked human body. Your comment only highlights your own insecurities about your naked body.
yeah thats pretty much it
Fucking oath man
Somehow, I agree.
so what? dont see a problem there. Really not.
a life size forest painting with benches to sit at look in.
maybe a looking out from a fishbowl painting
Policeman: “You’re under arrest!”
Artist: “What?”
Policeman: “For painting that wall white, punk!”
To write things down they thing of while on the john.

4. heres the thing copy and paste to 2 other vids its tru i tryed it yesterday and it worked
and thean a month later signs were re posted on the white washed places lol
That public art was ugly as sin.
This needs to be done on a national level. Could you imagine how beautiful this country would look if we had art in place of advertising?
Every person in advertising and marketing needs to be killed~Bill Hicks
sweet. art>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>scum on the bathroom tiles>>advertisements
No walls were harmed in this process.
All of them were signs. Illegal ones.
j have skytyes nervous but now j have nervuos empty alone it’s progressive because look the future(it’s coming of music farm)
lol.
my sisters in advertising :(
yeah. wtf?
they could have put something better instead?
Love the show. Can you put more links to relevant sites? - I’d love to follow this story directly without having to track down the details. Keep up the good work. dt
great project. I wish I could see the results in person…
Definitely a good idea, I just wish the art they put up in it’s place actually looked good.
was that voltron!?!?!?
i lol’d
cool, we could spread this through the world, man
I tought exactly the same, I really hate all that modern “art” crap. But its still way better than most of the ads
so you paint over their ads and then let artist advertise instead?!?!?!?
Why are you in charge of who gets to advertise their work in those places??
you missed the point.
i love the idea, but the artwork was shit…lol
what betterway to stick it to the man, take there multimillion dollar idea and cover it with a piece of crap. its genious
I thought the artwork was good, the white space and a simple image in a big city would be quite powerful
So, yeah, like I decided to paint on these buildings without asking the owners so I would cover up advertising for someone else with advertising for me, Jordan Seiler, artiste.
that last picture was definitely effed up
is the point to take paint over ads for bands and put up ads for artists??? They say they want the public to have a say or a place to use the space…did they hold a vote to see what the public wants?? And what gives them the right to speak for the public??
I bet every one of those pieces they did was signed by the artist.
Lesser of two evils I suppose.
Unless they paid the city to display their work there, I love how people feel righteous doing shit like this.. Fact is, I read and enjoy most of these posters, almost every art exhibition/concert/festival/protest I have ever attended I found out about through this kind of “illegal advertising”.
Nice job 4.5 stars eh, guess you won the publics opinion, I’m off to set some “illegal art” on fire. :)
I would like to see more like that.
how the fuck this is ART
Sweet!
and about 20 min after that artwork was done… a group of taggers and poster crews covered them up with tags and posters of a rap battle near by.
why did i get so many thumbs down
its from demitri martins bathroom joke on art
well hu knows
This is so cool.
I agree. There is something quite arrogant about all this.
If they wanted to perform a public service, why not siply leave the posters white-washed?
Kind of in the spirit of Banksy, but let’s face it, nobody is as Banksy as Banksy is.
Neat idea, but the art is kinda lame.
because white is boring
Génial !
Because they themselves have the right being the public themselves. Public posting, painting and etc is to let the general public or individuals post they’re oppinion freely….there are other public artist in New York and i say they are all worth it, the mainstream big companies should rott anyways as it’s making a lot of people dumb treating us as with the abused wife practice.
Ferry Corsten poster at 0:34?!
And then any band themselves have the right to go back and repost their posters over this “art work” right?
Unless they asked and polled the public to find out if they want posters of bands or “art work” up then they should have left it just white.

5. LOOK AT YOUR BACKGROUND
they are really illegal ads? i recall seeing it but never once pay attention so no way i can recall what i saw except for those rap album ones.
Aren’t advertisers and business owners also the public?
These artists have no mandate. They didn’t conduct a survey and discover that that such bill posters are unpopular.
Who’s to say that their (extremely amateur) “art” is better than the posters the cover up?
The artitsts simply favour one sector of the public (themselves) over another (advertisers and those who would be interested in their products and even perhaps like their adverts).
Then they portray themselves as great heroes!
I don’t know about you guys, but I prefer art rather than advertisements.
You are right, but I like the art better.
What they did was better than a whitewash. And if someone doesn’t like it, they should whitewash it themselves and put their own artwork there. I enjoyed the pictures that were shown in this video. I liked the adds too, but the new art was far better, mostly because it lacked annoying text.
They are the public, that’s the point. They cast their vote by putting up the adds.
Now someone can respond by putting the adds up again. It’s just a media war.
the advertisers and business are public…but the places they put up the posters were not they’re property as they didn’t have to pay for it giving it the freedom to do whatever they pleased…plus, most of the flyers and posters there were companies big enough to afford other media ways or post they’re adds somewhere else like billboards.
It’s not just to post art, it also gives the sence of democracy. It gives to show that the public sector is just that…don’t you just LOVE america.
the advertisers and business are public - Agree’d - these hippies that see all corporations as evil really annoy me…
I agree with you on some level, but I think the artwork is more important to the public eye than the advertisements, and they are ‘taking a stand against corporate rule’ or whatever. Anyway, I think the artwork gives much more to the general public than the advertisements.
I love Rocketboom and their stories. Three (or more) cheers for Rocketboom and the cool stuff they find! Hip-Hip…
That painting guy is exactly like the dad from Back to the Future.
The point is that surely both activities-unlicensed bill-posting and wall-painting are illegal.
I love democracy, and that means I believe in the rule of law, and the will of the majority.
If you like mural-painting so much, then campaign and persuade the city to permit it. If the artwork is indeed “more important to the public eye” as you maintain, then you will be successful.
Freedom of speech is not an absolute. It must be subject to circumstantial controls.
we offer living merchandize with high quality and reasonable prices.you can search “Robbuy com” by google to find us.(we accept paypal as payment method.)
yeah we had a different program, replacing art posters with corporate marketing filth -.-
at least the museum did advertisment with powerful aphorisms of famous thinkers and artists, something to make you think and laugh instead of corporate psychological warfare, horrible for business, evil socialist stuff..
yeah whats wrong about whole cities wallpapered in over life sized psychological warfare, everywhere you go the same images - calculated by experts for psychological manipulation, what could be wrong with that, stupid hippies
There will always be people who abuse democracy and break the law. I’m in favor of this guerrilla effort over some corporate funded add campaign. Why change the current laws when they are so easily broken? Most police didn’t even bother to stop the “criminals”.
Good stuff.
He doesn’t even care about covering up the illegal advertisements. He’s just smug and wants to paint his graffiti. If he really wanted to cover up the advertisements he’d get alot done much faster if he just painted them all over with white. But since he’s a smug artist, and so full of himself he’s just replacing these advertisements with advertisements for himself.
Because whitewashing looks nice.
People who paint art are smug?
Paintings are advertisements for oneself?
Are you high?
I see your point.
I think if he really wanted to “use the space for the public” he would have invited other artists to use the space. Or leave it white.
Hahahaah, “while we were doing the whitewashing work.”
Search “Happy Rob Buy” by google ,and you will find amazing.
psychological warfare? are you telling me you’re weak minded enough to let a few pictures take control of your life and go on a shopping spree? Dawin’s evolution applies here… If you’re dumb enough to be manipulated by advertisement maybe you deserve poverty.
i probably am (i avoid said warfare where i can), and i think you are, not just a shopping spree but accepting certain realities, its much more subtle, what the advertisment conveys is probably not even entirely intended by the advertisers, its systemic
no matter the symbol or its intention: if all the people in my environment are made seeing it many times every day - you really think it has no impact?
I’m pretty sure he did invite other artists. I think most of the paintings were not done by him, if he did any. This interview does make that unclear, however.
No it does not have any affect. It can be a very nice scapegoat by people who have issues with buying ridiculous things but just because i see Victoria’s secret advertisements does not mean im going to buy a bra because the corporations tell me too… I see more pepsi advertisements then i do coke, however i still prefer coke over pepsi any day. Not due to advertisement psychology but rather personal free choice.
UGH. Why do people try to be creative with those people with animal heads? It’s stupid and pretentious. Why don’t they put a picture of Mario riding Yoshi?!?!
[...] Vía Rocketboom [...]
that looks like hipsters things…. :< FAIL
yeah he said two people got arrested, plus its a hell of a lot of tagging to do for one guy
This would be a lot cooler if they had actually replaced the ads with quality art.
he doesn’t write graffiti…
thats what i was thinking
I love animals, but - putting their heads on human bodies is just ugly….I’d rather see ads!
fail
thats enuf out of u!! sry lol but i find the art which is replacing these “illegal ads” to be much easier to look at and some of them r even enjoyable. point is, the art isnt trying to drill an idea or thought into ur head. I wish they did this in my city, would be awsome!
The level of art used was quite low, maybe due to time constraint and legal limitations.
your mom will die if you ever post another chain letter ever again. kthnx :]
art has not levels nor quality!
Well I do hate how if I turn on my TV of go online I have adds shoved down my throat and the last thing I want is to see more spam adds as i go for a walk or head out to work but that art needs some work I think.. I mean it kinda sucks :/ maybe I should try and spread my creative wings better yet time to see if I can help out
Nice try. Keep it up check out esteembpo + com for social media marketing. gddf
waste of time
[...] daar zullen ze aan moeten wennen, het zijn nou de artiesten die de wet aan hun kant hebben… Hier de pagina van RB, voor de overige links [...]
So Communist artist vs Capitalist artist!? I’ll go with capitalist, as a graphic designer I like making money and paying my bills. lol
“Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art.”
