  4. Neither the ads or the whitewash/art are gratifying or aesthetic in any sense. One or the other, who cares? The activity is just something to do, instead of sitting around wondering what to do today.

Teenage wasteland. Been there, done that. And with no direction, purpose, or meaning to life, … and the field is ripe for a new Cause. Motivating this and future generations, propelling a spirit of “can do.”

    Our Caitlin + Rocketboom = a springboard

A computer system mimicking biological cognition. A new form, species of life. Creationplace: the New York metropolitan area. Accomplish this, and we are the envy of the world, forever.

  10. “Create your own space, etc.,” is the key, yes. But for the proliferation of urban information spewed everywhere, I’ll walk past an ad or whitewashed art with the same lack of attention.

So much mediocrity today. Nothing captures and drives the best of the human spirit. So much blasé, today.

Ads have just one social justification to exist: they are a source of money to pay good quality contents into the media system. If you think about it they have no other valid rationale. Surely not an economic one: no free markets can exist without rational and informed consumers, whereas ads are a tool of scientific misinformation. So, as it stands, as long as we need ads to keep the media system running, we should at least keep them from pouring outside the range of media financing and pollute our social and mental spaces. Actually, we should be fierce at it: why billboards at all?

Yeah because protecting children from nude art is totally the foremost concern. Artistic nudity isn’t corrupting children, commercialism is. Stop crusading under the banner of the righteous and realise that nobody should be ashamed of the naked human body. Your comment only highlights your own insecurities about your naked body.

I bet every one of those pieces they did was signed by the artist.

Lesser of two evils I suppose.

Unless they paid the city to display their work there, I love how people feel righteous doing shit like this.. Fact is, I read and enjoy most of these posters, almost every art exhibition/concert/festival/protest I have ever attended I found out about through this kind of “illegal advertising”.

Aren’t advertisers and business owners also the public?

These artists have no mandate. They didn’t conduct a survey and discover that that such bill posters are unpopular.

Who’s to say that their (extremely amateur) “art” is better than the posters the cover up?

The artitsts simply favour one sector of the public (themselves) over another (advertisers and those who would be interested in their products and even perhaps like their adverts).

Then they portray themselves as great heroes!

What they did was better than a whitewash. And if someone doesn’t like it, they should whitewash it themselves and put their own artwork there. I enjoyed the pictures that were shown in this video. I liked the adds too, but the new art was far better, mostly because it lacked annoying text.

  84. ScissorHand26

They are the public, that’s the point. They cast their vote by putting up the adds.
Now someone can respond by putting the adds up again. It’s just a media war.

  85. RuddyWasHere

the advertisers and business are public…but the places they put up the posters were not they’re property as they didn’t have to pay for it giving it the freedom to do whatever they pleased…plus, most of the flyers and posters there were companies big enough to afford other media ways or post they’re adds somewhere else like billboards.

It’s not just to post art, it also gives the sence of democracy. It gives to show that the public sector is just that…don’t you just LOVE america.

The point is that surely both activities-unlicensed bill-posting and wall-painting are illegal.

I love democracy, and that means I believe in the rule of law, and the will of the majority.

If you like mural-painting so much, then campaign and persuade the city to permit it. If the artwork is indeed “more important to the public eye” as you maintain, then you will be successful.

Freedom of speech is not an absolute. It must be subject to circumstantial controls.

He doesn’t even care about covering up the illegal advertisements. He’s just smug and wants to paint his graffiti. If he really wanted to cover up the advertisements he’d get alot done much faster if he just painted them all over with white. But since he’s a smug artist, and so full of himself he’s just replacing these advertisements with advertisements for himself.

i probably am (i avoid said warfare where i can), and i think you are, not just a shopping spree but accepting certain realities, its much more subtle, what the advertisment conveys is probably not even entirely intended by the advertisers, its systemic

It can be a very nice scapegoat by people who have issues with buying ridiculous things but just because i see Victoria’s secret advertisements does not mean im going to buy a bra because the corporations tell me too… I see more pepsi advertisements then i do coke, however i still prefer coke over pepsi any day.
