that can’t be right
any way this was nice
wish there was any sound though
effects not music
but still nice
Okay this is the chalk-line style, namely from the wiki: filming black lines on white paper, then reversing the negative to make it look like white chalk on a black chalkboard.
This is the tidbit of the day to fling by chance in conversation tomorrow to make me look like a big expert and astound the friends. Good stuff, RocketBoom.
It looks like Sesame Street used some similar styles for their more tripy animation.
Wow, that’s awesome.
Really like modern cartoons! Haha.
Oh, and wow - I’m first comment? Bloody hell, that’s a first. I really AM up early today/
I am very proud to say that I was, technically, the first person to have a comment on this here video. Good day old chap.
Nice video, Rocketboom :D
Baah, never mind… I didn’t see Raptor’s comment….
that was pretty interesting. :D
I heard he just used Flash to do the animation.
wow that wasdifferent…..
Final Fantasy had a fully animated film?
very intresting! great idea and very realy in films history
To be a first cartoon, it is quite abstract. Like, why weren’t future cartoons influenced by this clip?
Maybe no one knew about it, just like me 3 minutes ago. Still, it’s nice to watch a century-old animation.
that’s the best high I’ve had in a while :P
Huh? There’s tons of later abstract cartoons made after this.
FlindersSharp got first comment but was removed
Two actually
i like how rocketboom has such a wide variety of informative stuff.
Informative and entertaining :D
Intresting Thanks
That was really interesting! :]
I remember when rocketboom used to be funny >_>
what’s with rocketboom thinking they’re some sort of meme authority now?
when the hell are they gunna make more “know your meme”? All this garage they are showing otherwise is lame and boring.
garbage. you said garage.
That was quite the blunder, I say. Cheerio!
I’ve seen better animations done on those post-it notes.
On the contrary. They’ve told a few memes wrong, and they’re not an authority, the just make profit with memes.
That was fairly good.
amazing considering the times it was made..
brilliant even by today standards
We’ve come a long way
Awesome. I’m so glad I got to see this.
Awesome
The cowboy with the oversized cowboy hat jumps from the horse and runs towards the camera. The screen goes black. The white lettered words, “Meanwhile, back at the ranch …” appear. The scene with another cowboy inside a room in conversation with a female in petticoat …
We’ve come a long way.
i guess i’ll never understand french cinema…
This looks like it should be a frank zappa music video
Brilliant?
How so?
I agree that considering the times, it was a very creative, innovative, and brilliant idea. But… by today’s standards??
C’mon now….
by todays standards this is done all the time and there are many youtube videos like this and they get hundreds of thousands of views. that being said I have better things to do then what them… again.
Interesting that Cohl recognized many things that are only possible with animation. Prior to modern special effects, it was nearly impossible to show this range of surreal transformations using conventional techniques–I particularly liked the sequence where the figure gets sucked into a champagne bottle, which subsequently blooms into a flower. Of course all of this was possible in short form with flip-book animations before the advent of film.
Is an ILM remake too much to hope for?
Complaining about how compared to today’s standards this is nothing special is like complaining that the sound quality on a Robert Johnson recording means it is nothing special. Just as Robert Johnson is the grandfather of rock, this is the grandfather of modern animation.
Life is too short for french movies, now that´s a truth!!! :-/
WOW, I thought the first animated movie was of a Brontosaurus walking and eating, 1914, this is much earlier and even more primative.
Someone should clean up the footage. Wouldn’t take too long - I guess!?!
Never knew that - France sis a lot for animation by the looks of it. The Lumiere brothers has some funky pictures of birds flying and horses galloping and now this guy.
Thanks RB!
holy makaroni
wat
that was amazing. this is the kind of videos i like rocketboom to post.
This is… realllllly trippy xD!
Awesome! Yes, definitely what I like to see from ROCKETBOOM.
Obscure and surprisingly relevant facts from everywhere in our world. LOL
You’d think that this was done by a young person, but the guy was 51 when he did this
ROCKETBOOM is starting to become my favorite YouTube channel. Damn, these spotlights are amazing.
Brilliant for 1908.
Brilliant for 2009.
increible
Born 100 years too early. I can only imagine what this artist my have posted on 4chan, newgrounds, somethingawful, etc. etc.
How come there is no music? =(
it’s a silent film - but feel free to grab an old casio keyboard and hit the demo button for a rockin’ soundtrack!
Glad to hear it!
