Okay this is the chalk-line style, namely from the wiki: filming black lines on white paper, then reversing the negative to make it look like white chalk on a black chalkboard.

This is the tidbit of the day to fling by chance in conversation tomorrow to make me look like a big expert and astound the friends. Good stuff, RocketBoom.

It looks like Sesame Street used some similar styles for their more tripy animation.

To be a first cartoon, it is quite abstract. Like, why weren’t future cartoons influenced by this clip?

Maybe no one knew about it, just like me 3 minutes ago. Still, it’s nice to watch a century-old animation.

On the contrary. They’ve told a few memes wrong, and they’re not an authority, the just make profit with memes.

The cowboy with the oversized cowboy hat jumps from the horse and runs towards the camera. The screen goes black. The white lettered words, “Meanwhile, back at the ranch …” appear. The scene with another cowboy inside a room in conversation with a female in petticoat …

    We’ve come a long way.

Interesting that Cohl recognized many things that are only possible with animation. Prior to modern special effects, it was nearly impossible to show this range of surreal transformations using conventional techniques–I particularly liked the sequence where the figure gets sucked into a champagne bottle, which subsequently blooms into a flower. Of course all of this was possible in short form with flip-book animations before the advent of film.

Is an ILM remake too much to hope for?

Complaining about how compared to today’s standards this is nothing special is like complaining that the sound quality on a Robert Johnson recording means it is nothing special. Just as Robert Johnson is the grandfather of rock, this is the grandfather of modern animation.

WOW, I thought the first animated movie was of a Brontosaurus walking and eating, 1914, this is much earlier and even more primative.
