This ElvisAmericanInn truckstop near Jerusalem reminds me of a little place on I-40 in the middle of the northern Arizona desert. It’s a very small town, mostly populated by Indians; Native Americans belonging to the Hopi genus, I think, or maybe perhaps also to a mix of descendants of wild cowboys and desert nomads along with a wino hobo from southern New Jersey who hitch-hiked a wagon ride to the region from the Santa Fe rail station in 1872. They have the hugest lizard and turquoise collection in the world. Everything to do with lizards or turquoise. People from both directions on the interstate regularly stop at this barren small-town traveler’s complex, consisting of a ragged bitty truckstop and filling station, a grimy grill, a slovenly lumpen bar, and a smokey small desert Indian slot casino annexed off the scanty souvenir shop; with some dilapidated house trailers alongside a few tumbledown cinderblock / stucco structures just off the exit ramp in the middle of nowhere, to buy keepsakes of everything lizard-y and turquoise-y and desert-y. And for US$1 you can walk around back to a ramshackle corral to view the world’s largest salamander, which a nine year old boy of Mexican heritage proudly holds high in his arms for you to see and pet.
I can’t remember this place exactly now, but one day a few years back as I pulled my 18 wheeler out of their dusty parking lot I know that I definitely saw Elvis — trying to order a slice of apple pie at the counter. There is a small sign at the road pointing left that says: ‘Las Vegas: 309 miles’ while another pointing right says: ‘Memphis, USA: 1,274 miles’.
