But the problem with being immersed in imagination is many people don’t actually try to UNDERSTAND the world around them or they make up stuff to fill in their knowledge gaps (I.E. “fundamental religionists”, if that even sounds accurate). And why the hell does he think the internet is free, seeing as how EVERYTHING costs money. Only assholes who have money to burn and the greedy say shit like “people should have to pay for X, Y, or Z” (said item probably already costing an unreasonable sum.)

I think the technology is a tool just like Lily’s cake baking tools. Hwvr an EZbake oven doesn’t turn itself on to remind you to play with it & tell you what to do & how like an ipod does. thr4 Lily’s imagination has to do more work making it more active.

it’s like cars. sure nobody walks everywhere like they used to & it’s true their legs are weaker for it. But with a car you can go so much further…

Technology does affect our thinking, but not directly, it operates through the medium of a belief in an inherently existing self-model generated by our brains. This is exploited by technology as well as sexual interests, familial relations and social dynamics. All of these things play-off our idea of being some one and we get caught up in them trying to grant value to our existence. All of which are distractions to the realization that the self is a mirage, albeit an evolutionarily adaptive one.

no humour intended. i meant what i said. and really? dead on? imagination=theism? c’mon! religion is dogmatic by default. imagination is the ability to imagine, think outside the box. how can thinking outside the box be any related to dogmatism?

I would propose that necessity is both the mother of invention and imagination alike. While imagination does indeed seem to abstractly engineer itself, it still generates at least partially from our view of the universe; and technology that aligns or ‘busies’ that perception can take away from it. But technology and innovation should be constructed for the purpose of enhancing those fundamentals of the sentient human experience. (Such as digital art or MOVIES that re-introduce this concept)

3 things: 1)If people weren’t actively making stuff up then there wouldn’t be so many spinoffs and interpretations of the original judeo-christian faith. 2) Imagination CAN be a bad thing under the conditions of my previous comment. 3)I do agree that imagination does help in some ways, but in order to utilize it your mental devices must be firmly bound to reality (I.E. reason, logic, critical thinking, and skepticism). These things to some degree PREVENT us from becoming “dumb people”.

The opening sequence of the film does a great deal to open the audience’s imagination. I think starting off the feature with such a grand view of such a vivid world of one’s mind is perfect to introduce everyone to the movie. It does waht theatre used to do back in the first half of the 20th Century — completely takes the person watching out of our own world and entrances us with a story.

I saw it at the Toronto Film Festival in September :)

When you said “enslaved” I assumed you just meant addicted, but that can’t be right because you then said it gives us an “giving them the illusion of freedom”. How so? How are we any less free today than we were before computers, TVs, etc?

Technology can be an extremely potent hindrance to our daily lives….it’s so addictive, it’s so cheap and affordable, and it’s mostly for good reasons….but if you don’t take things in moderation it can be a huge problem…and technology seems to be taking over the lives of alot of people who use it at an overly high rate throughout daily life….

  131. Can you visualize your car right now?
Can you change in your mind the colour of its body? Red, green whatever…
Can you figure out yourself getting in the car and the noise of the door when it’s closed?
Can you imagine the tactile sensation of your hands on the steering wheel?

If your answer to the questions above was yes you already have all the imagination you need, and perfectly efficient. In fact the questions above are a practical definition of what imagination is. Technology per se does not affect imagination, either in a good or bad way.

More complex mind habits and strategies are part of the learning process, to which technology is just a fungible set of tools. Not really necessary. A jigsaw puzzle may be a better trainer than any computer.

Oh yes, TV, internet and gadgets used for (constant) social networking surely inhibits creative productivity. There’s people who have the TV on 24/7. They don’t even notice how much it controls the atmosphere/mood in a household, and how it’s continuous distraction prevents a mind from “introverting” into a creative thought-train.

It all depends on the way we use the technology. Take Photoshop, tons of people have it and use it for very impressive and creative things, and without a computer to put it on , they may never find that one thing to express themselves. On the other hand, people who sit around watching mindless television programs all day *cough* The Hills *cough* are more likely to think that tuna is a type of bird, and that Star Wars was based on true events.

People in poverty and people who live in isolated rural communities (i.e. Amish) are far less likely to watch as much TV or play as much video games as say, middle-upper class people in the city. They are more akin to people during Shakespeare’s era; according to your logic they would be more likely to be creative geniuses.

Technology has greatly expanded the world of millions of people, and provides an open platform for communication and creation. This doesn’t sound counterproductive to art.

  223. Dear Molly RocketBoobs,

You, your lovely dress, jewelry, and your questions were BRILLIANT in this extraordinary interiew! Mahvelous, Dahling!!
I mean, you actually interviewed Terry Gilliam. THE Terry Gilliam, from Monty Python. Fab!
It doesn’t get more rare and wonderous than that! (And the Dr. Parnassus movie look completely enchanting too.)

And, now that we’ve all seen you “cleaned up” in your red carpet finery, our (male) imaginations are fired more hotly than ever before.
You are a precious jewel, much to be coveted and desired !

As for your question about “technology vs imagination”: Deary, that’s easy.
Without our individual and collective IMAGINATIONS there would BE no UNIVERSES!
It has been argued, convincingly, that it is our collective, agreed upon, combined imaginations
that are the ORIGIN of this, and any universe. Just like a film.
We agree that the universe IS, and — Presto!! — IT IS.
We are the gods of our own universes, albeit, often in conflict and competition,
just as writers, directors, producers, talent and editors struggle for creative domination.

    Lead on, Precious Princess…lead on.

technology definitely makes mental processes less imaginative.

For example, you’re forced to put more thought into writing a letter by hand because it’s more troublesome to make mistakes, but on the computer you can just type whatever comes out then spell check and edit.

Also Photoshop vs painting. Painting demands more imagination because you don’t have any preset tools, colors, brush strokes, etc. You have to think about what you have to do to achieve certain colors and strokes for painting.

It depends on what you do with the technology. If you’re a passive consumer then yes it can most certainly stifle the imagination. Conversely if you take the time to become a producer of something then technology can be very liberating.

It’s basically why I got into computer science. I didn’t want to sit by and just do something with my system. I wanted it to empower me to create.

    Jesus (Yeshua) is the Messiah!
According to God, we are all sinners, and the penalty is eternal death! The good news is that God loves us so much He sent His Son Jesus to die for our sins for us. Jesus was crucified and buried, but God raised Him from the dead. Jesus is YHVH, the Lord God. Confess your sin to God and ask Him for forgiveness. Call upon Jesus Christ and ask Him to be your Lord and Savior. You will be forgiven and will have eternal life by believing in Jesus Christ.

The most specialised toy retail chain in the world, with 340 shops in 28 countries, offering parents and children lots of fun and learning, with maximum quality and safety guarantees.

      1. My random insinuations are generally supported by a surprisingly precise sense of accuracy.

However, it’s since october 23 they are showing it in Italy and people are saying that after an enthralling beginning they wanted to commit hara-kiri at half the movie.

It seems that the whole plot is about something that had to begin with Heath Ledger and end up with Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, with a nod by Tom Waits somewhere in the middle.

Quite the opposite. I was implying that the title might be due to a pre-existing brand. A common marketing strategy by companies who are keen on conceiled advertisement in movie productions. I don’t know if it’s true. But it appeared cool once written.

        /now you’re talking strickly about the movie…/

Yes. I can do two things at one time, and often I forget to highlight the shift in order to better popularize the concepts.

        /you spoke of corporate watchdogs/

I seem to remember I wrote “CORPORATOCRACY watchdogs”, referring to those commenters who appear so watchful on corporate hidden and devious penetration.

      4. Corporate placement has been going on for 20 years since those “Back To The Future” movies began, that’s when it became obnoxiously obvious. I actually thought of the idea before it occurred but did not have the means to pursue what I knew would be a lucrative endeavor, nor the inclination. Movies are supposed to be works of art not advertisements. Get a microscope and check your next gubber.

PS this movie looks awesome. and I think movies ca build imagination as well as the internet, witha a proper education. but cut and paste Micheal Bay-esque movies can kill one just as easy.

As a child I had trouble learning to read. The result was I refused to do reading assignments. At the end of the second grade my dad forced me to sit at the dinner table with nothing to do for the an entire summer. The lack of external stimulus forced me to develop a powerful internal world. People are amazed at some of the things that I have cooked up. Like the notion of everything I made for a sci-fi series I intend to write that a physics PHD I showed it to refused to shoot it down.

    To answer your question Molly:
I think technology has given us a myriad of new ways to express ourselves. It increased the availability of works such as this movie to the masses but it also increased the availability of distractions. There a just so many easy ways of enjoying yourself, creating anything seems like work. Being creative often is work but there are people who enjoy that work and are a benefit to everyone who can access their works. Technology made the effects of their work available to a lot bigger “audience”.

My word, spam. I grew up without watching a lot of TV and with no video games and I am and remain a very imaginative person. Whether or not the lack of technology my friends had has anything to do with it, well… who knows. This interview certainly made me want to see the movie, though.

@calthyechild Personally I don’t think so. I was exposed to a lot of TV, video games, etc. and I feel that they have actually helped me maintain my imagination. I occasionally write scripts for student films. Really, I think a person’s imagination is inspired by their experiences, so they’re not better or worse, just different. The show Reboot, for example, is a sci-fi/fantasy story based around video games, computers, and the internet, and it is very imaginative.

I think its the opposite cellphones and technology have forced kids to imagine. rather than being with someone you imagine that you are with them. Technology has alos allowed me to be more creative. Considering many great computer programs like photoshop, gimp, painter, autodesk ect. taht actually allow me to be as creative as possible for i no longer have to buy infinate art supplies including pencils and paint. this also allows me to be able to have all the tools i need to be creative.
