The climate of Earth has been changing for BILLIONS of years. CO2 is NOT a pollutant. Every oxygen breathing organism expels CO2 and plants NEED CO2 to produce O2. CO2 makes the Earth Green by promoting plant growth.

So why would governments be talking about it? To stay popular, if everyone is conserned with climate then they should be worried about climate change too.

There are evidence for it. Not conclusive evidence, but evidence non the less.

The big problem with the whole debate is so unscientific, with both sides resorting to scare tactics, made up numbers (or rather conveniently picked numbers) and retorical tricks rather than presenting their case in a good way. There are intelligent people on both sides, who are making a good contribution to the debate, but they are drowned out by the rest (which is a real problem!).

Grasses only appeared shortly before the last ice age. Grasses also being one of the main contributes to the ice age. The grass took out millions of tones of CO2 out of the air plunging the earth into an ice age.

The ice killed most of the grass expect in warmer areas which allowed the remaining animals to fill the earth with more co2 and green house gasses. Warming things up over millions of years. And now the grass has grown back. Slowly making things cold again.

CO2 is a load of shit, cars are only responsible for 7% of total CO2 emission where as electricity and mining go for as much as 40%.
But nobody wonders why you should buy green cars, everybody just does it.

People criticize coal burning power generation all the time. Just because YOU haven’t taken the time to read the actual criticisms means nothing. And furthermore, what is your point? Are you suggesting we do nothing? If CO2 is mostly being driven by industry, as it is, then shouldn’t you be pushing for MORE reduction in that area, not less? Denial is a river in Africa, my friend.

Well here in canada, as far as i can remember last winter was extremely cold and lasted just about up to june.

But 7 years ago or so, there was a winter where it didnt snow till january and compared to last year there was 1 foot of snow every week or so. And this year im expecting more.

If the weather for this year is warm than scientists can use it as a comparison and say that it is getting warmer, if its colder they will shrug it off as if it never happened.

Denial, river in Africa? Don’t know where you’re going with that, but anyway:

As for the CO2, there are lots and lots of studies regarding the natural phenomenon of climate change. I don’t think it’s right to go with one which hasn’t been proven to be the only one. Infact, a major magazine once turned down a 2 year study on an alternative cause for climate change, just because it would stop the blind belief in CO2.

Oh and as for the coal criticisms: I didn’t say anything about coal… :S

Scientists determine climate change by the mean change of the earth’s surface, not by regional effects. It’s also the culmination of many events interacting with each other that point to temperatures greater than what would be expected with the same variables outside of ghgs.

Btw (new comment because of character count ;) ), my point is that most environmental things aren’t very environmental at all. It’s mostly a trick to lure you into buying things that really don’t make a difference. I think it’s wrong of our governments to endource such purchases and to condemn people that don’t “go green”. Don’t you think this green hypocrisy has lasted long enough? Every car manufacturer nowadays is making green models just because that’s where the money is!

    1) you should put it into perspective of what we produce, because nature’s in relative balance of what it emits and sequesters. It’s the equivalent of having a balanced budget and then throwing on more debt every year over what you make.
    2) great so we can’t buy low emission products and push for greener energy/industry because?

Agreed, it depends on the scale. But on that same scale human emission (=air we breathe out) was at 3%, just to give you a bit of a view.
So… 40% goes to electricity and mining people…

    1) Exactly, yet the information gathered from investigation of old polar ice (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just google “Vostok station”) teaches us that nature has always known swings in CO2-levels.

    2) I’m not saying there is no possibility that CO2 can be excluded as a cause, but until that has been proven, I see no reason to buy green crap.
But you’re right, if CO2 ís the only cause and climate change isn’t natural, we should buy/invest in real green technology (not green crap).

    Except that
    1) there’s plenty of evidence pointing to it being CO2 including CO2’s basic properties which even skeptics accept.
    2) There’s no known other mechanism that would account for the rising trend over the last few decades that excludes the rising ghg concentration.
    3) The only “real” debate in the scientific community isn’t whether we’re the cause, it’s how bad the effects will be since we have no exact circumstances in history to compare it to.

    1) according to the USGS we produce more than 130 times the amount that volcanoes produce
    2) the relative amount that nature gives off is about the same as it absorbs
    3) Water vapor stays in relative equilibrium unless temperature increases first.
    4) if you want an analogy think of it as the earth having a relatively balanced ghg budget and we’re just breaking the bank

I agree, but this is inevitable and it costs a lot to society. A lot of the major cities are located near a river or a sea, which makes rising of sealevel dangerous.

But sure, there are worse things.

Unfortunately I think that it’s going to take a while to be fully sustainable energy production. And the best we can do right now is to postpone the inevitable.

Inevitable? Mater is neither created nor destroyed - it only changes form or state. Controlling global weather is quite a ways off but not within the realm of possibility. There are things we can do (but won’t) to stave of that inevitability until we can. I will continue to maintain the best solution is to find a way off this rock into the far reaches of space where there are far more pleasant worlds with space for all to live in peace.

Yes, it is inevitable, Because of the demand for energy, increased living standards in India and China (and Afrika as well). Combined with the state of technology and it’s implentation.

We even need nuclear power to fullfill the need, so we will use the oil.

But sure, in the end we’ll get there. No worries about that.

Not quite true, the climate is and has always been changing. The big problem is, it is being presented as a bad, even catastrophic thing. Also, there is this huge movement placing guilt on the common people for wrecking the atmosphere beyond repair. Fear mongering it is called, and fear is big business. Thou shalt be taxed!

On the other hand, it is certainly a good idea to reduce pollution, to come up with clean(er) energy sources… If only because fossile fuels will run out one day.

if you’re already starting from the premise that any and all evidence shown thus far is illegitimate due to “a global conspiracy to get money!” then what makes you think that any reasonable man can produce evidence to satisfy your hyperbolic criteria? Answer is that no one can: your mind is already made up.

I agree. In the northern climate hard winters kill the bug larvae. The winters haven’t been as cold in recent years and for the first time in millenia insect lines are creeping to higher latitude’s and altitude’s. Entire cities have been built on information like mosquito altitude borders. It’s easy to tell who has an education and who doesn’t on these forums.

ex3: it uses a graph from the ipcc’s first try at modeling past climate, the only graph available was from a man that got most of his info from northern Europe and that represents the medieval warming period, this chart is also over 20 years out of date so it’s got the problem of only representing one region and not including the last few decades. That would be why the hockey stick graph was relevant as it takes world temperatures into consideration not just regional.

What happens when a volcano explodes? It tosses up a bunch of carbon dioxide. We need this to live. Without it, we would die. It has been recored that whenever there is a massive volcanic explosion, it doesn’t heat up the earth, but rather cools it down. A global winter, because the ashes & carbon dioxide blotte out the sun’s ray.Don’t call it warming, but rather global cooling. Besides the sun determines our heat, not what we put in the air. That air is what we breath, that is more important.

Are you retarded? I mean really. Do you know why Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system? It’s because of the huge poisonous clouds that cover it. The Sun rays go through the clouds of ash and bounce of the ground, but when they go back up, they are reflected by the clouds, somewhat like a microwave. If our planet were to become covered in volcanic ash, then the temperature would increase. Congratulations on the fail.

Before you comment on something, it would be to your advantage to look it up first/ History has shown that extreme volcanic eruption that spewed ash into the atmosphere produced carbon dioxide & a global winter. I just read up on it.That’s why I was able to make a comment. I don’t make comments unless I have the facts for it. We’re not Venus, a big difference there & different atmosphere & clouds.

    1) we put out over 130 times the CO2 that all volcanoes put in the atmosphere combined according to the US geological survey
    2) It’s actually the particulate matter not the CO2 that block out the sun since CO2 is transparent
    3) ghgs absorb long wave radiation which keeps the atmosphere warm, if the light is the same, higher concentrations result in a higher retention of that energy that normally radiates out into space.

  177. garith21

Actually it’s a combination of it’s extremely high atmospheric pressures and it’s primarily CO2 atmosphere, the sulfur clouds actually reflect most of the light into space, but what little light gets through gets absorbed by the CO2 and insulated by the clouds.

Models actually predict a temporary decrease in temperatures due to the reflectivity of the aerosols in the atmosphere

    Reply
  178. garith21

You should actually read more, while volcanoes do release co2 and temperatures do cool if a super volcano erupts, it’s because of the particulate matter that stays in the atmosphere reflecting the light back into space, not “because it releases co2″.

The fact that CO2 is a ghg and absorbs long wave radiation is a well accepted principle of physics, well that and it’s transparent, which makes me wonder how you think it blots out the sun.

Since you brought up “air we breath” I should point out that due to burning of fossil fuels and the chemical reactions that take place that combines the carbon within them with the air to make CO2 by taking oxygen out of the air O2 levels have dropped by 3%.

Also at high enough concentrations CO2 does cause death, not saying we’ll do that any time soon, just pointing out the irony in your bizarre statement.
