I’d have to say personally Up in the Air was my favourite film, then Up, then it’s a toss up. Avatar didn’t impress me a huge deal.
But what I THINK will win. Best director will almost definitely be Kathryn Bigelow. I’m not too sure about best picture. It’d be a shame if Avatar one I think seeing as how poor the script was. As a realist I’d say HL will do it, but I’d love to see Up in the Air take the award

I haven’t seen all the nominated films yet, but I don’t believe Avator should win due to it’s totally predictable and tired old plot. Of course it will, though. And I think Best Director should go to Quentin Tarantino, along with Best Screenplay. My favourite movie of the ones I’ve seen was District 9-hopefully it won’t get shut out by the lesser films.
I want UP, Inglorious Basterds and A Single Man to get awards but as you said Molly the cliched and annoying predictable academy will go for the over-budgeted/massive hit or the underdog. Nice skirt btw :)

I started watching ‘The Hurt Locker’ and it was so boring (for me) that I just stopped, I honestly hope it doesn’t win. I think it should win the best directing since it would be all like wow that a woman won directing and all that. But it’s boring….
If Avatar wins, everybody will understand and it won’t be strange, nor bad and I really want it to win. It’s like the normal thing to do.
I still have to watch ‘A Serious Man’ and ‘Precious’, but Precious is so sad I don’t wanna watch it.

Yeah, Avatar was a great a movie, but I can’t believe it was the best movie 2009. The special effects were great, but I didn’t feel they were any better then King Kong or LOTR.
Same with UP. I thought it was good, but not as good as Ice Age 3D.
IMHO District 9 should win Picture of the year (although I haven’t seen the hurt locker or Precious) out of those 10. I think Start Trek and capitalism were snubbed.

You must only be seeing the environmental message of the movie. So its no wonder you would take offense to my comment, I know how touchy people get when you insult their religious beliefs, and the Eco green movement is a religious movement. But the movie is still poorly written and is a knockoff of movies like Ferngully, Pocahontas and others. The only original thing the movie has going for it is 3-D. Shame on you indeed.

I loved Avatar. James Cameron is an amazing writer and director. Just because his movies earn extreme amounts of money doesn’t mean they need to be hated or boycotted.

meh, if you’ve seen one terantino movie, you’ve seen them all. It will reference obscure films, involve lots of uneccessary yammering by the cast about nothing which advances the plot or their character, someone will be built up to be an important character then instantly killed, therefore wasting our time with his “surprise” he does all the time. Oh and of course he will take any opportunity to force his fetishism on us by frequently focusing the camera on women’s bare feet.
I haven’t seen all the nominations but winning an Academy Award is certainly a good recommendation the see the movie.

I just washed Crash. I don’t understand the hate, that movie deserves everything that it got. And Avatar is an easily forgettable movie that relied on CGI and the story of pocohantas.
Yes the script is atrocious and the acting is very poorly preformed, and the movie requires almost no thinking as Good and Evil are very easily distinguished.

Avatar’s not a terribly good prediction for best picture–fantasy movies have almost no chance of winning best picture. Even Peter Jackson had to have THREE best picture-worthy films just to get one best picture for Return of the King. My money’s on Hurt Locker.

Yes Man was based on a book about a true story that the author, Danny Wallace, was involved in. He really did say Yes to everything for that long, though it wasn’t because of anything stupid like a self help group.

I would place it in second place, right after Avatar. These two movies and Inglourious Basterds, are the only nominees I’ve seen, so it’s impossible for me to find a place for the remaining nominees in my list. I prefer the Golden Globes and the Independent Spirit awards. I have not won an Oscar yet, but I did win many Clios.
Avatar has a weak story and bad written characters but this things go into “original screenplay-Oscar” (and it won’t win that).
In Best Movie, the producers receive the prize.
So it is a dilemma. Is it the low-budget Hurt Locker, which was made pretty good with just “a few” dollars? Or is it the Blockbuster Avatar, which was made pretty expensive, detailed, and took a huge risk as well?
I think in the end Avatar will make it, because you have a huge over-all experience and it blows you away.

Not any good choices. Avatar was a remake of Dances With Wolves and was dumb. Hurt Locker was such a joke for reality. Too many people don’t know that the EOD stuff was all wrong except the soldiers who saw it and hated it. Besides it had a dumb ending. But Hollywood likes things that are fictitious. With as much as they hate the military I’d put my money on Avatar. Best of both.

@firejack007 I think Up In The Air is a good choice for people related in that work field, also the first 10 minutes of Up! - the combination of music and imagery to show those two growing up and everything was awesome, rest of the movie was okay if you like talking dogs and stuff along those lines lol. I’d put some money on Avatar for the immersion that 3D had, how it was used more as shading than in your face “3D!” - those are my two cents though, haven’t seen Hurt Locker.

The only thing besides the visuals that I liked about Avatar was Zoe Saldana’s ridiculously outstanding performance. I’m pulling for The Hurt Locker, although Inglorious Basterds may upset, and An Educations was one of my favorite films of the past decade or so.
Yeah, the Hurt Locker has it, but honestly I believe Precious or Up in the Air could upset because do you really think the Oscar voters will give the Best Picture to a film where the acting wasn’t really that praised but only the story and the special effects. I agree, Avatar was a fun movie, and lets leave it at that, I didn’t expect it to even get nominated other than special effects and stuff like that.
Avatar was actually better than I expected, I did not watch it until about a month ago.
I just do not know why someone in order to like one movie, has to hate others because someone else likes the another more than theirs. Silly, I can enjoy movies for a whole bunch of different reasons. Avatar is not Oscar worthy, but it was a fun ride :)
I purchased Crash, it was a good movie. I think the genious is how the film manipulated the audience, using stereotypes, people that believe they are not racist, or have prejudgments about people, are effectively “tricked” in this movie, and shown that everyone to a certain degree is like that. what they did in that movie was not easy, it could have gone down miserably, but they did it right.
I just believe that Molly placed District 9 at the bottom of the list, not because she thought that movie was the worst, but because it had the least chance of winning best picture, judging by how and what the academy usually goes for. they usually do not choose Sci Fi movies. and of course by now you know that Avatar did not win. which I did not expect it too. although I did not see the other favorites yet to draw an opinion.

District 9 is the worst piece of trash ever made. It’s nomination for best picture degrades everything the academy is supposed to represent.
Avatar wasn’t anywhere near as good as people seem to think it is. Technically it is a great piece of work, but as a whole it is lacking. The effects are quick to blind you in my opinion.

@ramedyou2 Essentially, yes, it is the movie that made the most money ever, what with it’s massive following and the fact that most people saw it at an increased price in 3D and 3D IMAX. Adjusted for inflation, this is not the case. But it still made more money in the end. The money in James Cameron’s pocket from Titanic does not adjust for inflation.

By “boring” I just meant: it’s boring that an uglier, fattier and more talented communicator would probably not have as much Views/visibility as this one here. But that’s human nature.
