Part of the reason we don’t have as many polymaths these days is that the total knowledge of any given subject is so large that we are forced to specialize. In order to truly be expert in something like (for instance) genetics, you don’t have time or the mental resources to be an expert in (as an example) Egyptian Archeology, or any of a thousand other specialties.
Back then the sum total of knowledge was so small in any of these fields that a single person could make great advances in many of them. Today the great minds are by necessity focused. For instance, research Norman Borlaug. An amazing man who’s work has affected the lives of more people on this earth than any other single human being. His mind and his focus was great enough to excel at anything he wanted to apply himself to, but he only had time for his one obsession.
You are right, and yet there are still significant exceptions we shouldn’t neglect.
Have a look at the lives of Robert Hoppenheimer and Richard Buckminster Fuller. They were not only multitalented minds, but also highly moral human beings concerned with the well being of the whole human kind.
I never thought of it that way but yeah he is a colonial version of q. I should tell my history teacher.

He was more than a Chuck Norris of nerds. Franklin was a triple threat, he displayed his physical prowess as a wrestler in his youth, he expressed his creativity in his writing, and his well documented scientific intellect. That most of this was established in his lifetime did open the door to some moral ambiguity. Women threw themselves at him. He probably laid more pipe than Ron Jeremy. There is a Franklin quote running around where he speculates wonder that he did not die of venereal disease.
