The holodeck was more virtual reality, because it actually created the world around you, not just adding tags or info to a camera feed. It didn’t augment reality, it created it. 3D glasses are a bit of a closer connection, they take what you see, and show you more, creating a changed image, not substituting a different one.
… the movie is just exploiting hype from the actual Mayan prediction of the end of the planet… but like i said, it’s all hype.

GPS and pattern based alignment is good, but check out “SLAM” based augmented reality. Compared to GPS it is much more accurate and works indoors. Compared to pattern-based alignment, it can work on any surface. And it also creates a 3-d model of the room your in - which could be pretty cool for AR video games!

I was trying to pay a tab at an establishment the other day to a college woman who cold not figure $36.15 - $19.40 because she didn’t not have a calculator. She didn’t believe me when I told her because she didn’t think I could just stand there and do it in my head.
I wouldn’t mention it except it is happening with depressing frequency. I want to go back to the day when we dreamed about this future. Really. I’m home sick.
Speak the truth. It was so wasy because you rounded off 19.40 to 20 and then took away 0.60. Any other couple of figures would have had you at a loss just like that woman and me.
Yeah. We call that contractor’s math hereabouts. But she couldn’t write it out either.
Nor can most college kids in this college town make change correctly. They’d rather awkwardly hand one a fistful of money and repeat the change amount shown on the display. I frequently count it back to myself, sometimes to make sure, usually to embarrass them, occasionally in the hope that they will learn something.
Most, not all, prefer the machine’s instructions and forms and rules of procedure to employing skill, intuition and initiative. Many actually feel pressured when asked to think on their feet, be diplomatic and decisive.
However, I also get my inspiration from men and women of that age. Just not from as many. And I note that the ones I like often notice the same things and are a little disheartened by their own generation. But they have more tolerance than I and are predominantly focused on their own success, which will be easy by default.
I think that 2nd place in the 3rd millennium will go to any who tries. 1st will be won out of a smaller field of second placers, but will still go to those with unusual talent and/or obsession.
I’m not so sure you can totally blame people’s reliance on technology for people’s apparent “stupidity” to do math. Maybe the hiring practices for cashiers has gone down over the years, and they don’t hire people based on their math skills but rather availability and how less they can pay them. Or maybe that woman just couldn’t do simple math….Einstein couldn’t do simple math.
But I understand what you’re talking about, I’ve encountered your situation before. I’ve also encountered the reverse situation many times too. This is where you have an older person struggling to use the computerize cash register to the point where they had to ask the other cashiers for help. I just waited politely in agony of the lengthy delays.
Don’t worry, I’m sure robots will be our cashiers soon enough, so no more delays! =)

Great piece! Please note that the HoloDeck is Virtual Reality. In Augmented reality, you just get a sign that says who the “actions figures” are. But, on the HoloDeck, you can actually go to bed with the action figures and have real sex with them. (But, you also have to run the risk of getting eaten by a giant, carnivorous fly!)
The “Real” question is this: What if the whole physical universe is really just a gigantic HoloDeck? And, we are the programmers who are writing the code?
In that case, we all need to do some serious re-writes on this planet Earth program!

They do not try to create a virtual word but to augment the reality, to improve our leaving, try to imagine a pair of glasses that can show us the online information just by looking at a object or a restaurant, or when your trying to find a address to actually see arrow pointing you the direction. We do have access to all that kind of info using G.P.S . , computers, mobile phones, the only thing new is the way we access the information.

Cereal boxes have always tried new things to attract kids. I remember when some of them would come with “45″ records stamped on the cardboard. You could cut them out and actually play the cereal box on a record player.
