To be fair, the reason why the rolled in these trucks is because they knew there would be 14k geeks with data phones all trying to twitter inside a four block radius, something that only happens once a year.

I DO have to press play for every ROCKETBOOM episode I watch. It’s automatic for all the other videos I watch. Just here I am required to press play.
As for the story. This is cost management and capacity flux being put under control. It’s very cheap to rent a spot in a parking lot for a truck Vs spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to lease a cell site and build on it.

      1. Never heard of brain damage, I only heard of brain tumors. And just in case your observation is just about cancer this comes from one of my favourites sites when it comes to data checking homework:

        http://www.skepdic.com/skeptimedia/skeptimedia66.html

Cellphones, brain cancer, and other cheery thoughts

9 Jan 2010. As you may have heard, the state of Maine is considering “legislation requiring cellphone makers to affix labels on their devices warning consumers of possible brain cancer risks due to electromagnetic radiation.”*

Below are some facts and well-supported opinions relevant to the issue of cellphones causing brain cancer:

        logic and methodology

Correlation is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for causality. Without correlation, there is no causation. Correlation does not establish causation, however.

No scientific study on this issue is or can be a randomized control study on humans because of the ethical issues. Besides, if there is an effect, it might take 20 or 30 years to manifest, not to mention how hard it would be to find an adequate control group and keep watch on them. Studies on animals, such as rats, exposed to various amounts

        et cetera…

To make a long story short there isn’t a miserable scrap of evidence of a causation between cell phones and brain cancer.

And however I prefer commentaries about Mrs Roundtre than about cancer.

Sorta seems like an ad, but as others have said it doesn’t look good for AT$T’s network. Possibly related, I had to stop following Andrew because he kept tweeting about how much money he makes from Apple stock.

im sorry guys.. but im not really good with this internet thing.

can someone please explain to me what does it mean with increasing capacity and not increasing speed. doesnt capacity means like, more people can use the service, and with not so much traffic due to many people, the speed of internet can be increase..

does capacity really not correlate with speed?

    Reply
  72. Joshlama

@bie5436 you’re completly right by saying that capacity means more people can use the service, but all must use the same speed; the only time speed is a problem is when lots of people (such as 14k of geeks) want to use the service at the same time. Then you start to choke the system.

capacity means more people can use their service at the same time, it doesn’t increase speed of 3g/calls, just improves signal quality.

Verizon’s ads are puffery. They show all of their coverage including the areas where the signal is weakest, and then they only show AT&Ts peak coverage where the signal is strongest. If you looked at Verizons peak coverage you’d see it looks the same as AT&Ts peak coverage. They just chose not to show both maps with full coverage because that wouldn’t be as dramatic. Don’t bother bitching me out about my comment because I’m about to go to bed soon.

But I think Ellie asked the best questions and asked them appropriately to get the most detailed answers for this tech vid.

You seriously think that the radiation given off by these towers is dangerous? They’re smaller and give off less radiation than larger towers to begin with but also humans are dosed with radiation everyday from the sun, and that dose is increased the higher you live (everytime you fly it increases ten-fold) unless you absorb an stupidly large dose (which would be impossible from these towers) your life wont be affected in anyway by your daily dose of radiation from mobile etc.

How does anybody on the Internet make money? They don’t.

23,000 views is not nothing, though.

    Nobody is watching television either.

I think everyone on earth is either: 1. rotting their brain playing video games or 2. actually going outside and living.

You should say that AT&T doesn’t really exist anymore. What was left of AT&T was bought up by SBC Communications Inc. in 2005 (headquartered in Dallas, Texas) which wisely changed its name to at&t which is why the new logo is in lower case letters.

It’s really not as hard as people think it is to get admitted. I’m sure a majority of YouTubers could pass the entrance exam without even studying.

@RoeNand They might qualify for government grants, run advertising (on some pages), accept commissioned stories/story ideas (like this one for at&t might have got them all a year’s worth of free calls as “thanks”) plus their overheads are probably pretty low. Maybe everyone is a volunteer? Maybe they don’t plan to make much profit but sell up in a year or two?

“These are converters that uh come in via fibre optics and then it converts it into ethernet? Right?”

She just needs to begin with “I personally believe…” to complete that sentence…

I was there and the service was still very backlogged despite the trucks.
I was showing full bars but had to try 2 or three times to just send out a text and calling out was almost impossible!

    The God of All Comfort
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.2 Corinthians 1:3-5

For the people who think this says something about AT&T’s coverage: other mobile phone companies use them too. They also go by the names Cell In A Box (CIAB) and Cell On Light Trainer (COLT). They’re used in emergencies, at big events, and routinely in places where the provider is allowed to park a trailer, but may not erect a permanent structure (military bases, for example).

Thank for the look inside one, @rocketboom. I’m surprised that the wiring and layout weren’t neater; perhaps the COW has been around for a while and the 3G and WiFi are addons. What technologies do they use for backhaul? What were they using when you visited them?
